Uruguay fisheries exports in 2007 are expected to reach 196 million US dollars, according to the latest estimates from Daniel Montiel, head of the National Directorate of Aquatic Resources.
"This is encouraging since it means a significant advance over 2006" said Montiel who also revealed that DINARA has earmarked half a million US dollars for scientific research, helping to consolidate the industry and contributing to the expansion of the Uruguayan economy. "The purpose of the fund is basically to improve resources management in our fisheries, advance with fish produce traceability and have a reliable census of artisanal fishing volumes", said Montiel. The DINARA director also announced that the Uruguayan fishing fleet satellite monitoring system will be fully implemented in the near future. The fishing industry in Uruguay generates an estimated 7.000 direct and indirect jobs.
