The prime minister of the Turks and Caicos Islands has resigned after an investigation that found “clear signs” of corruption in the territory’s Government.

Michael Misick’s announcement came a week earlier than expected.

Misick had previously said he would step down because he had lost the public’s support. A British inquiry has been investigating claims that members of his party misused public money and profited from the sale of Government-owned land.

Britain said it would dissolve the Cabinet and legislature of the territory southeast of the Bahamas and that control would be transferred to Governor Gordon Wetherell.
