Former Brazilian president Jose Sarney and currently head of the federal Senate, reiterated his opposition to Venezuela’s incorporation to Mercosur because of differences over interpretations of democratic governance with the regime of President Hugo Chavez. Read full article

    It would be absurd to allow Venezuela to join the Mercosur at this point. A country that sponsors, as a matter of national policy, the crushing of dissent, censorship, political persecution, and assassination cannot call itself democratic.
