Argentina’s renowned ballet dancer Julio Bocca has been named by Uruguayan president Jose Mujica as the new director of the official Sodre Performances and Dance Company.

The announcement was confirmed by Bocca, Tuesday afternoon after meeting at Government House with President Mujica, Minister of Culture Ricardo Ehrlich and the head of the government’s broadcast, television and performances service, Sodre, Fernando Butazzoni.

Journalist Buttazzoni who until last February was head of the Culture Department of the Montevideo City government contacted Bocca who after retiring decided to reside in Montevideo, where he can be seen walking along the city’s famous sea promenade.

“I feel moved and it is a great honour”, said Bocca who anticipated he would be bringing international figures to Montevideo, taking advantage of his contacts with other dance schools.

“We’re going to enjoy things Montevideo has never seen before”, anticipated Bocca.

Sodre recently inaugurated a new auditorium after years of delays.

“I would like to meet with the maestros of the Uruguayan Dance School to unify didactic aspects of teaching ballet, which I believe has never been done in Uruguay, he added.

“There are very good professors in Uruguay but there is a lack of didactic unification. So I will be fully engaged in what I most love: directing and teaching”, said the world famous dancer who has performed in the best theatres of the world.
