” .... a fleet of hunter killer Astute class submarines, complete production of six Type 45 destroyers and start a program to develop “less expensive, more flexible, modern frigates .....”
Oct 20th, 2010 - 04:22 am - Link - Report abuse 0I'm no great fan of carriers, which I still see as big targets. More subs is spot on and lighter, faster surface craft make a harder target.
The other day Liam Fox referred to the refurbishment of the Falklands airfield, to which of course will be added the new airport facilities on St. Helena thus reducing the need for a large fleet to defend the Falklands.
Not mentioned above, but a big increase in the resources available to Special Forces to fund a lot of new technology.
No cuts in missiles either :-)
One of the good things about all the recent publicity of course is that it has reminded the British people that the Falkland Islands are part of Britain and also that so many lives were lost in '82 on their defence. Attitudes in the UK are hardening against Argentinia again .... well done Think, and all of those pursuing the new aggression :-)
Morcuss, you are an idiot!

Oct 20th, 2010 - 10:08 am - Link - Report abuse 0Without carriers there is no air superiority, without air superiority the fight is lost.
This has been proven time and time again.
There is currently no other type of ship than can dominate an area thousands of miles across.
You may be right Zethee, but it would appear that I am more in tune with Government thinking.

When can we pass for Stanley with the paper to sign on?

Between us as none will know, don't you feel a little bit ridiculous after your Military power show off? because you are worse than Argentina now.
hahaha

40,000 troops and most of your attack aircraft mothballed? Yes we're definitely in a worst position than Argentina.
Oct 20th, 2010 - 11:39 am - Link - Report abuse 0I'm tending to aire on the side of Hoy here, we have an air base able to accommodate 2 squadrons plus supporting facilities and Units which can be reinforced in under 18 hours, just over half the time it would take an invasion force from Argentina to cross the sea from the nearest port.
And lets not forget MI6 has slightly more than 1 field office now in Latin America, a military build up would not go unnoticed now :)

Oct 20th, 2010 - 12:09 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Yes, we shall be very cautious not to be tempted by Mi6 agents and sepoys.
With an economy almost bankrupted, RN will need the more excuses that they could find in order not to be dismantled. The debates about defense cuts shows how the Argentina threat could be managed to seed fear in UK people...and obtain some extra-funds.
We will build up our military as our defense budget is astonishing low, so all the trend should be for at least double or triple the present budget.
It doesn´t mean that Galtieri is alive, just normality and recovery for 28 years of cuts.

I seem to recall Argies getting all excited, jingoistic and interpreting previous MOD spending reductions as a green light to launch an unprovoked attack on a peaceful, virtually undefended neighbour. That didn't end too well did it?

Annual budget: £7.7bn
What's being cut: The overseas aid budget is to be protected from cuts but not the department's other costs. Budget to rise to £11.5bn over four years to meet UN aid commitment. Aid to China and Russia to stop and reduction in administration costs.

very true, but what happens if argentina gets lucky and lands a rocket or bomb on that airfield? Or gets a spec ops team to motar it? No air support, no air troops.
A floating base is indespicable.

Oct 21st, 2010 - 02:39 am - Link - Report abuse 0the cut to the armed forces don't go far enough, they should scrap the ark royal tomorrow and get rid of at least 30% of army personnel across all ranges if they really want to get to grips with the budget deficit.

There is something that you love to say all the time...Get use to it :-)
I'm actually quite happy with the cuts .... they appear to have a few missiles on the islands and subs for the defence should Argentina ever get the balls again .... but as your military has almost no budget at all that seems unlikely :-)

Oct 21st, 2010 - 11:32 pm - Link - Report abuse 0 ... The U.K.’s oversized place in world history makes it easy to forget how small an island the nation of 61 million actually is. It is home to less than 1 percent of the global population and accounts for barely 3 percent of the world’s output. Yet the review will leave Britain with the world’s fourth-largest military budget, behind only the U.S., China and Russia. That is the definition of a nation punching above its weight....
