Dear Alex Rogers, I studied the South African Museum collection of chiroteuthid squids and found several specimens similar to that in your photo (in another blog). Also I examined the type material in Denmark and reach the conclusion that is Chiroteuthis (Chiropsis) mega. Please check in the SAM collection to verify what I am saying. Also, those specimens were misindentified as Chiroteuthis virilis as jar identification. According to my findings that species is distributed in the Atlantic, Indian Ocean up to the west coast of Australia.
