Was this a surprise? Not for me as this was a low CoS anyway. DES have 1 more funded drill before needing more capital after further 3D seismic. If DES go to the wall then that is life in high risk expo. RKH have a much better model anyway and most of my NFB exposure is with RKH. However, this could be a good entry point or top up opportunity on DES as the oil shows at Rachel mean oil has migrated in their licence.

What is clear is that 2011 will give us more data than 2010. The end of the beginning is upon us and I am looking forward to RKHs next exploration drill. If there isn't any oil off the Falklands then there is unlikely to be any oil in the Argentine sector of the South Atlantic either. The Falkland Islanders will be quite happy with the way things are providing there is no change to the way they are Governed.

I have been a long term investor in onshore Nat Gas exploration. Even when you know the Nat Gas is there finding the fields is a whole different matter. It takes a lot of drilling, seismic, 3D, to find something of value but when you do watch out!

One thing I did learn is that each dry hole provides you with a LOT of data so it not exactly like you have wasted $. The data is used to find the next drilling site. That data is extremely valuable to whomever is searching in the general area or subsequent companies.
I imagine these companies have been working with 2D from the 70s, which is pretty worthless compared to the info you get from 3D now. So each of these dry holes will get them closer to a major find.
The problem is you just have to make sure you have enough $ to fund the many many years of exploration.
I don't follow these stocks so I don't really know how well they are capitalized. But the “chat” around the boards is that there is oil in the Falklands so it is just a matter of time before someone finds it, so if you have some $ it may be a good investment in 5-10 yrs because that is how long it will really take to make this financially worthwhile and to get the big boys interested. My advise is to buy the stock and put it in a drawer for 10 years and don't worry about this day to day stuff it is really irrelevant.

Fred. Thank for your balanced post. For DES funding is a major issue after their next drill. For RKH they have a confirmed and tested oil find that is heading for an appraisal over the next 2-3 months. With these stocks it is better to de-risk on the way up and average down on the drops (there have been enough of them!). They do have 3d which is being added to.

Very very few Argentinians are invested in the stock market. It is really not an investment vehicle open to much of the population so they have no idea what they are talking about...as usual.

Some people are staring an action against Desire Plc following the annoucement on the 2nd of December. I know this isn't popular with shareholders but people who bought on or soon after the announcement may have a claim against management and brokers. This need not affect the cash position of Desire itself. (¿?)

Jan 04th, 2011 - 06:50 pm - Link - Report abuse 0DES and RKH have drilled 5 wells between them in an area bigger than the UK North Sea (which took 6 drills before the first discovery). FOGL have drilled on low CoS well in one of the largest single licences in the world. BOR and ARG have yet to drill any wells yet. All this with a single rig with a second on the way later this year.
The single oil discovery needs appraisal and is anywhere between 100m and 1bn barrels.
Before you spout nonsense I would advise researching a bid more broadly otherwise you make yourself look like a muppet!
