The Argentine press claimed Friday that the official news agency argentina.gob.ar, which depends from the government’s Mass Media Secretariat, is using in its web presentation Google maps of the country which refer to the South Atlantic archipelago as Falkland Islands and only in brackets (Malvinas).
Furthermore in the portal argentina.ar there are maps of each of Argentina’s provinces, but the Falklands/Malvinas “do not figure as belonging to Tierra del Fuego”, which is how they are considered under Argentine legislation.
“This in spite of Law 23.775 which refers to the political map of Argentine provinces and the most recent bill 26.552 which addresses their boundaries specifically establishes that Malvinas Islands belong to Tierra del Fuego”, point out the several media that picked up the news.
The same error (¿?) apparently is repeated in the Social Development Ministry, which also makes use of the Google maps.
Social Development Minister is none else but Alicia Kirchner, sister of the recently deceased former Argentine president Nestor Kirchner, and therefore sister in law of President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner.
