I don't understand your point. It is well known that Osama Bin Laden was promoted - mostly by him - as a figurehead for Al-Qaeda but that he did not operate in isolation. Nor did he mastermind all of the terrorist attacks. But he did claim 'credit' for many atrocities including 9/11. I don't think the significance of this should be undermined by pedantics.

That's damned bad form, killing your mortal enemy - especially one that has had so much money invested in making him the Incarnation Of The Devil.

It is always necessary to have a Devil-Figure to focus national attention on the-enemy-without.

Who is lined-up by the US Administration for Devil-Replacement?

    Gaddaffi? - too short-term.
It will have to be an Iranian, unless the US wants to prospectively start demonizing the Chinese.

How weird is that the troops decided to get rid of his body so fast! I'm not usually of the conspiracy theorist type, but bin Laden's death is doubtful. His “death” is just too convenient for the government: 1 - Obama's seeking reelection; 2 - the “death” is likely to reanimate Americans to support interventions abroad. That is significant considering polls show Americans are divided on the intervention in Libya - an understandable position considering the years of setbacks in Iraq and Afghanistan.

@5 The US election is too far off, imo, for it to affect the outcome.

Disposing of the body was always going to be conspiracy theory fodder but look at the alternative. If the body were at an accessable location it would create major problems.

I think the US tried to avoid criticism of offending muslims by ensuring 'burial' within 24 hours. OBL was born in Yemen but a Saudi citizen (although in recent times that was taken from him) so the body was offered to the Saudi government; they refused it. Where else could they possibly bury it? Any thoughts anyone?

Unless the US government are supremely stupid they will have collected enough DNA, photographic, video evidence to prove this was OBL.

On a side note, I love that Donald Trump's programme Celebrity Apprentice was interrupted by the President's announcement. Donald trump is such a prick.

    @ElaineB

That's what one's waiting for - evidence. As for Saudi Arabia, I didn't know the body had before been offered to its government. But then again, what does this mean? Saudi Arabia's regime is deeply embedded with the US government. If Sweden, a “neutral” country, can collaborate in the promotion of the darkest points of the US agenda - e.g., Assange's arrest - then one can't really expect anything less weird from S. Arabia.

By the way, I don't think 2011 is too distant. Plus, bin Laden's death may also serve bipartisan purposes - to increase support for military interventions, for example.

I would say neatly done USA as regards disposal of the body. First offer it to Saudi certainly, that shows respect etc, but no way Saudis would want it!! Last thing anybody in the world wants is a shrine site where all the fanatical nutters can go and rant and be a focal point for evermore.
Sea burial was the best method, no doubt with an Imman in the back of the plane to say the appropriate words as he was dropped out over the Indian Ocean.
No doubt USA will provide the world with proof of his ID in the next few days as the story unravels.
Big surprise to me was that US Special Forces pulled it off without either killing half of themselves or the wrong people! Must be a long time since they got it right on their own! But anyway well done USA and a good day for freedom and democracy- one nasty tyrant less, and all those families of his victimes -many of them were muslims - can get some satisfaction and “closure” from it.

Conspiracy or not, as Forgetit points out it is very good timing for Obama. I don't think its too early for the election, it will no doubt get discussed at great length on the campaign trail (I wonder if Donald Trump will demand to see the death certificate if he's running against Obama), and the surge in patriotism will inevitably help the war in Libya.

I heard they only got him after he disguised himself as a British soldier! ;)

They must release photos/videos of his corpse though.

Now to enjoy everlasting world peace.........

News is still filtering through but, apparently, DNA gives a match of 99.9%. ( I am not sure they have emailed it to Forgetit yet : )) And as he was hit in the head with two bullets they are reluctant to release photos but I expexct they will emerge.

OBL was washed and given the appropriate rites for a muslim burial, though I wasn't aware that dumping a body in the sea is considered' appropriate'.

I assume offering to repatriate the body to Saudi Arabia was another attempt to assuage criticism. All part of international conventions, I think. But as they withdrew his citizenship a while ago I can see why they didn't want his body.

Definitely this is a feather in Obama's cap but voters have notoriously short memories and a week in politics is a long time, let alone months. If it works in his favour then I say it is great.

@10. I confess the same thought ran through my mind. How did the US soldiers pull off such a well executed plan? Probably a bit uncharitable but they do have a dubious record.

Obozo is going to win the elections in 2012.
They could not time this better. They've done it again to distract the people from the real problems in the US and meanwhile the debt ceiling is being raised again (high unemployment, rising gas and food prices and a decline in property values and the dollar what leads to the lower standing of living in the US)

You think Obama was responsible for the state of the US economy? The Bush administration left the problem for Obama to pick up. If anyone thought it could be done in a couple of years they were deluded. An economy takes years to turn around.

I hope Obama gets longer to make an impression. JMO

To be fair, I think Obama would win the next election even if he had chosen Bin Laden as his running mate, and cracked 9/11 jokes at the debates.

The Republicans are a shambles with no real stand-out candidate. Palin? Huckerbee? Romney? Trump? None of them stand a chance.

“Whenever America uses violence in a way that makes its citizens cheer, beam with nationalistic pride, and rally around their leader, more violence is typically guaranteed. Futile decade-long wars in Iraq and Afghanistan may temporarily dampen the nationalistic enthusiasm for war, but two shots to the head of Osama bin Laden -- and the We are Great and Good proclamations it engenders -- can easily rejuvenate that war love. One can already detect the stench of that in how Pakistan is being talked about: did they harbor bin Laden as it seems and, if so, what price should they pay? We're feeling good and strong about ourselves again -- and righteous -- and that's often the fertile ground for more, not less, aggression.”

As a non-American, the only aspect of US politics I'm interested in is foreign policy. As such I'd like to see someone in the anti-war left (Kucinich, for example) or the anti-war right (eg, Ron Paul) getting a ticket. Obama has not altered Bush's clumsy, self-defeating foreign policy, and neither will any Republican contender except for Ron Paul. If anything, Palin, Bachmann and other Tea Party names represent an even more blatant push for US military jingoism.

Answer no. He is “one” of the clowns of destroying the US economy, and take a good look at all the fear mongering, restrictions they come up with that fits their neoliberal economic policies. they are making progress while keep the majority of the public blind.

“An economy takes years to turn around.”

ElaineB, so long they keep the zombie banks alive with all the stimilus packages (QE's), while most of foreign nations have no appetite at all for worthless US treasury bills, the US economy keeps draining slowly into a black hole.

I hope the US government does not release photographs of OBL's body as it just feeds the more voyeuristic and no amount of evidence will ever satisfy the enthusiastic conspiracy theorists.

Once you live in the US, and watch the news (CNN, ABC, NBC, MSNBC, FOX, HLN) with an open mind, you will realize how they spin the truth with a lie so that it becomes the truth that fits the political agenda of the political group they support (MSNBC for the DEMS, FOX for the GOP)..that's MSM.

'“Justice has been done”, said Obama.'

I've been thinking about the different justices meeted out in different circumstances.

Sure, justice needs to be *seen to be done* otherwise it is just retribution. . . and a lot of justice is just that. Hence the South American Amnesty - De-amnesty - Amnesty - De-amnesty cycles.

Some justice needs the drawn-out-ness of years of International Court proceedings where, paradoxically, the audience tires before the accused.
Like Milosevic http://srebrenica-genocide.blogspot.com/2007/04/milosevics-death-saved-serbia-from.html . Like Saddam Hussein (enough said).

But some justice is rightly, in my opinion, summary.
Bin Ladin's killing comes into this category. And I place bin Laden, and not Che Guevara, in the category because of the the extension of terror-killings into the civilian population (9/11).

Bin Laden was exterminated through summary justice -
it is no surprise that Judge Dredd was a Son of the American Revolution.

This cannot happen to Gaddaffi, where international Due Process is necessary to give *time* for transition, in a country where potential leaders and alternative governments have been constantly extirpated over many years.

The one that surprises me is Mugabe in Zimbabwe, where judgements are 'self-evident' and where 'judicial action' - of the type we see in the Ivory Coast - is conspicuous by its absence.
A tyrant, a dictator, self-imposed and self-maintained by the warping of democracy should surely be judged by Dredd.
