It's certainly a wank, bitch, moan, cry, pull your hair in a nervous frenzy... kind of story.

Though I suspect the Brits will pretend indifference... ;-)

I'm waiting for the “expert”. I'm sure it has something wise to type here.

If the Brits were to bring oil-smelling mud to the surface they'd be posting a similar article.

    “We've done it again!!! yeeeeeey...”

    Thanks for the invitation, gang.

In its own way, these new finds present as many, if not more problems than the Venezuelan heavy crudes.
The depth is horrendous - temp, pressure, viscosity, expansions - this is a new world of how-to-do-it technology.
Petrobras, working with the cutting-edge technical guys from the deep oil companies, will learn huge amounts that it will, in turn, use elsewhere in the world, like New Zealand.
    ....................
And on the NZ oil survey killing of cephlapods (last week's Mercopress),
    New Scientist:
Michel André experimented in the laboratory on marine molluscs (squid, octopus & cuttlefish), exposed them to 2 hours of low-frequency noise ranging from 50 to 400 hertz, and, after killing them and harvesting their organs, showed that their statocysts (balancing organs) were badly damaged by this sound which is “similar to submarine noise pollution, such as ship movements and sonar oil prospecting” (sic).

He said “This seems to confirm (sic) that ear damage in nine giant squid that were washed up on Spanish beaches in 2001 and 2003 was caused by low-frequency sounds from nearby seismic surveys for oil and gas.”

[Michel André, Technical University of Catalonia, (Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment)]
    ………………
André’s lab study tries to mirror *general* anthropogenic marine noise. It does cover (50-400Hz) the frequency range of 5-300Hz used in sonar pulses in oil exploration.
(Ultrasound is sound of any frequency above the range of human hearing, above 20 000 Hz., so LAHT & Mercopress reports are way off beam!)
However André constantly exposed the animals to 2 hours of lab noise at unspecified decibel level – they could not swim away. This is completely unlike a single-pass transit of a survey vessel.
Also André says the experiment ‘seems to confirm’ that the Spanish giant squids died of oil survey ‘sonar’.
No, it confirms nothing other than sounds can damage your ears – something I knew from my heavy metal days.

“exposed them to 2 hours of low-frequency noise ranging from 50 to 400 hertz”

Might be a clue as to why 400 whales beached themselves in Malvinas. I don't know about giant squids but I do believe whales use sonar to navigate.

As for the issue of temperature, Brazil is probably better off being that much closer to the Equator.

Petrobras already has oil drilling technology produced in-house. Just consider the fact that, unlike your country's oil company, British Petroleum, it has never caused scandalous environmental disasters even though it has been in the deep sea oil drilling business for years.

I'm not even going to read the rest of your crap.

Good for Brazil I say. Not sure why you Argies think we'd be upset by this, if it had been YOUR oil find then that might have been another matter.

    Isolde,

I just gently tease - even Elaine is starting to tease our 'regulars'.

And I readily defer to others where my knowledge is lacking - like Martin, who knows it is warmer in Brasil. . . What he has not told me, however, it what the T/P profile looks like from the pre-salt reservoir to the surface.
He is not wrong about the whales, but *proof* is incredibly hard to find. Statocyst destruction would be a good pointer, but no evidence yet from post-mortems (post morta?).
Forgetit is a bit grumpy this morning, don't you think?

    Regards,
    Geoff.

This is what I don't like about Geoff:

1 - how his opinions on politics always match those of right-wing South American corporate media, his always bilious attitude toward nationalist or left-wing politicians, his unwavering support for neoliberal right-wing movements, even for right-wing coups.

2 - his inventiveness in always find ways to spin news about South American countries into something negative and his general condescendent attitude towards the region.

I think GeoffW. should take the advice I gave him some days before and move back to Britain.

I once had an argument with Geoff in which he questioned the people of Argentina and the expectations we have of our President (any president) regarding Malvinas, especially on the April 2 ceremony.

It actually took 6 to 8 posts to make him understand that it is us that expect our president to make a statement and be assertive.

He wanted to tell me what we should think, I think it goes a little beyond condescendence.

    Thanks, guys.
It is 'good for you' to be exposed to Centre Ground political perspectives and the expressions of ethics in governance.

What you, Forgetit, see as S.A. rightwing is centre ground liberal elsewhere in the world.
Treat my position as a valid counter-point to your own positions.

There is *nothing* I would recind from my serious postings, especially, Martin, where services of Remembrance are used for jingoistic whipping up of mass xenophobia (hysteria?) - even if you say that is what 'the people' want and expect.

    Goodbye darling Think,

I have felt for some time that we have been drifting apart.
My thoughts have always been for you and for the betterment of your country in its dire time of need.

I will try not to be dismayed at your absence of comment - though I shall probably still comment on your postings.

    Goodbye, old thing.

    Good boy, Forgetit.

I have been thinking about your unwillingness to criticise corruption.
It occurs to me that you might be at risk from those around you were you to be seen to criticise them openly on this matter.
Perhaps your 'discretion' is a better tactic than your valour.
For, as you say, this is South America.

You have knowledge, right enough, but you remain - tainted goods.

    Sad.

So now you're resorting to ad hominem by distorting my words - what a low blow. That, I didn't expect from you.

You don't even know what I do in my life - who are you to make such kind of speculation? I know no one in a position of authority. The only person I'm obliged to is my old father - a man who harbors opinions very similar to yours. So please, refrain from more attempts at character assassination.

    Yes, Forgetit #1, 7, 11, 12 17, 18, 19,
I admit my counter-punch blew low. You can take it, surely?

But I am pleased that you are not a teacher.
Keep posting on economy & finance though, we gain a lot from your knowledge.
