Chinese military officials have confirmed that the country is completing work on its first aircraft carrier, based on the hull of Russian carrier Varyag. Read full article
the carrier would remain in Chinese territorial waters .......
So they have extended the reach of their airpower by a solid 12 miles..... golly...
I was thinking for a mo 'what has this to do with the South Atlantic'... but I see it now ... they are modelling their navy on the Argentinian one..... except the RG one remains in port.......
Frank: I've not read much about this but from what i have read this will just be a training shit(mainly) for when they start building there own home built carriers.
Aircarft Carriers are so yesterday. A hostile power only has to get lucky once to take out a sizable part of a nations air power. Medium powers like Britain need to spread their military assets to ensure a successful retaliatory strike.
What the Chinese have done here is why you don't sell old military hardware to them for scrap or conversion into casinos....
Is exactly why none of our sold carriers were sold to them. They paid for many under the guise that it was for commercial purposes.
Aircarft Carriers are so yesterday.
Disagree on this. Air power is currently the decider in most wars and having a mobile airfield or two is a great asset. This is why all nations currently up and coming are building them.
.[china, carrier]
Type: aircraft carrier [projected service date 2015, ]
Displacement: est. 50,000–60,000 tons[1] (conventional)
93,000 tons (nuclear)[citation needed]
it might take China many years to develop the technology, training, necessary for an effective carrier
Ex Russian technology, no one is sure just how good or powerful this may be,
If successful, l more may be built, if not they may well abandon the idea,
The uk and the usa has the advantage, of operational experience

as for yesterday, the basic point of carriers is to project not only power, but more importantly, to allow the navy to move effectively an airfield, around the world, without crossing over boarders or other hostile territory, and you don’t need other countries permission, they are in fact a great asset to any navy,
Sink ability,
well if you can overcome this obstacle , then you will have the [field or air, ] would you not, all ships can be sunk, that’s, why you have escorts and sophisticated array or weapons and sonar, plus remember that all carrier groups will have one or two Submarines close by, just a thought .
Briton. Just to clarify this carrier is not ment for offensive operations, it is ment for training the Chinese navy in carrier operations.
it might take China many years to develop the technology, training, necessary for an effective carrier
Is 100% correct. China has now got 4-5 carriers they have studied and this along with brazilian training is how they are getting ready for when they have built there own carriers.
It takes about 10 years to train a navy up in carrier operations in which time the chinese are expected to have a few of there own home built carriers.
no one is sure just how good or powerful this may be,
If successful
The carrier itself on paper is a great one. But it's russian....And they have a bad history with there carriers being rather terrible.
In naval aviation the Russians are up there with the Italians, the Germans, and a whole raft of lesser nations including Brasil and Argentinia.
Historically the only nations that have demonstrated the successful use of naval aviation are the US, Japan, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia.
In particular the South American carriers have just been a 'look at me' exercise..
