House prices in some parts of Rio are up nearly 80% in the past year,” says Ronaldo Coelho Netto, an estate agent in Rio de Janeiro, looking up at a new development near the city centre. Read full article
I hope that due to this so-called boom, this country can raise those under the poverty line to a better economic situation. I also hope that part of this money be used to increase education and infrastructure in general, that once again those who are rich don't get richier and those who are poor get poorer; and that our politicians don't get so greed and start spending what don't belong to them, but to the people.
Where are you from, Humbleman? Brazil is the only country among the top 10 largest economies whose growth has been coinciding with a drop in inequality. Education and infrastructure are already being improved. If you are an American or a European, I'd rather suggest that you worry about your country's situation. They are the ones turning more inequal.
The article is typical BBC simplistic coverage. They want to pass an idea, and choose to publish only the things that will support their viewpoint. It's not the first article they write with the exact same elements. I see in it a bit of schadenfreude, and a desire to keep newcomers at bay.
To say that the country is bullish and not looking in potential problems is ridiculous. I've lost my count on how many measures have already been taken by the govt and Central Bank to cool credit growth and preclude asset bubbles from happening. Of course, that's not good enough for the bankrupt British. They will ignore that so they can use the lecturing tone that they love to employ to discuss the 3rd World.
Just an addendum, Olympics preparation have actually been praised by the international comittee.

Brazil is the only country among the top 10 largest economies whose growth has been coinciding with a drop in inequality, yet one of the countries with the worst income distribution.
I was born in this country, and I've been living here for 40 years now. I know exactly what I'm talking about because I was raised by a family that was not part of this country's bourgeoisie. I know things have been changing in the last 8 years, but we deserve much more than that, if you know what I mean.

That is their typical bankrupt mentality. They in the so called western world (whatever that is, because Brazil is also a western nation), can't stand it how other nations are rising while they failing by their own incompetence. Sad but reality.
