So timely! Hurry up as the flight ARGENTINA authorizes to the islands will soon be over. You can't complain after so many years of Argentine good will indeed. Remember that it was Chile that suspended the flight in 1998. It's not a coincidence you promote and disseminate all this “cooperation” after Argentina's decision; then you name it. You are the ones provoking and

    Provoking and what?
This is what normal neighbourly relations looks like. It's been going on for years. It does't always make the news, because it's normal life.
It's newsworthy now because it's under threat.

And you don't get to tell any of us that we can't complain. 'Argentine good will' ?? What are you talking about? Where good will?

You are a fascist, peronism is fascism, your wishes to STAMP on the people of the Falkland Islands is fascism. Like all fascist you will go to hell!

We don't like using flights from Argentina, you are a nationion run by childlike fascists, with a psychosis and a fixation on other peoples national territory. We will be happy when these flights stop and your war veterans will only have your government to balime that they can not get to the Falklands.

All Argentina can do is make childlike claims on our islands based on a landing made by a German and a band of British expats almost two centuries ago. Laughable!

Keep goose stepping Alejomartinez you may shake your brain out of your ass!

Alejandro. You can cancel the stop in Rio Gallegos, but you can't stop LAN flying direct from Pta Arenas to the Falklands. Anyway, the only people who will lose out are Argentines, because tied into the same agreement is access to the Falklands for Argentine passport holders.

If you stop the flight going to Rio Gallegos, or even block it from Chile (which would be illegal), the Falklands will have to block any Argentine passports holders from entering... shoot yourselves in your own feet if you like...

What Argentine 'goodwill' Alejomartinez? Lan Chile operate the flight and the inhabitants (Islanders, Chileans & Argentines who live there) pay for the seats, so where is the Argentine 'goodwill' in that? Argentina typically bullied Lan into not resuming the flights in 1999 unless Argentine passport holders were allowed to visit the Islands. This happened. So if Argentina again bullies Lan Chile into stopping the flights then the only people who will be disadvantaged will be the Argentine war veterans, next-of-kin and journalists who take the flight from Rio Gallegos once a month. The 1999 Agreement will be revoked. The Islanders can fly directly to England TWICE a week with another airline so who needs the link to South America? It will be yet another 'own goal' by Argentina. Those Argentine passengers who visit the Islands on cruise ships will be mad as hell at Mrs Kirchner when they find they cannot get off the ship when it reaches the Falklands, because of her stupidity.

Yes, that world famous Argentine goodwill. Argentina's goodwill comes in the form of trying to enforce an economic blockade on the Falklands, trying to deny the islanders human rights, trying to destroy fish stocks in the south Atlantic to damage the Falklands economy, banning continental charter flights to the Falklands, threatening international container ship companies from partnering with the Falklands private sector, and of course, invading the islands.

How can the islanders forget Argentina's goodwill! You are making yourself look like a prat Alejo. Well, I mean more than usual.

Please can we have sensible and factual based comments from Argentine posters.

    1-I'm not a fascist
2-LAN can only fly because Argentina so authorizes. Not only because Chile recognises Argentina's full sovereignty over the islands.
3- Veterans and NOK have publicly supported the decision to consider suspending the flight
4-Argentina's good will is overt. Don't forget that you've enjoyed this only connection to the mainland because of Argentina's good will to reestablish it and maintain it”
Good job Argentina, once again. On the right track. Right has always been on our side, despite illegal occupation of part of our territory. Not only my words!!!

How? the flight would would have to fly south over Chilean Tierra de Fuego and then east around Cape Horn well outside of Argentine air-space. This would increase the flight time to nearly three hours and the cost of the flight per passenger would more than double.

    Are they bothered? No.

Does it do you any good? No.

Behave like spoiled children and the islands and islanders are ever further away. In fact, if you wanted to devise a strategy to ensure Argentina is irrelevant, you couldn't do better.

I hope CFK does attempt to halt the weekly flight. (Although she did not actually say she would, just hinted at it in that rambling speech she made). If she does she will move any support there is away from the Argentine government as it really is the most petty-minded move. Maybe that is why we have heard no more about it, she reflected on the negative reaction she would get outside of Argentina. And it somewhat undermines her 'victim' stance.

But I take the point of TFIslanders. In reality it would have little effect because there is always an alternative.

Elaine - the islanders have the opportunity to take advantage of a unique opportunity here.
Britain is a failing economic and political power that is now in the hands of vested interests that care only about profit at an price. Your politicians speak from both sides of their mouths at the same time and are selling Britain down the river.
Argentina is a flourishing economy and an established democracy and has the courage to laugh in the faces of the kleptocrats that have imprisoned the British in a deadly web of debt and control your politicians.
If the islanders come over the South America they will be be to retain their british citizenship, they will have strong links to the mainland which will be subsidised and will give them outstanding opportunities for business development. Their oil industry will benefit from the support and protection of Argentina so they will be able to fully develop their oil industry in which every islander will have some form of investment which will secure their financial future.
Times have changed Elaine. This is not the age of galtieri and the Juntas - it is the age of opportunity and wealth and the Islanders could be right in the middle of it if they want.

For 8 years now Argentina has been threatening and bribing commercial trade and transport links to the Islands, attempting to deliberatley wipe-out the natural fish resources of the SW Atlantic to further hit our economy, collecting meaningless verbal words of support from other countries etc etc.
Has it resulted in ANY little sign of the Islands coming crawling on our knees to you accept a COLNIAL takeover of our homeland by a foreign nation?

@12 What a fantasy you weave. The trouble is that not only do I live in the UK but I work in SoAm 6 to 8 months of the year, primarily in, but not limited to, Argentina and Chile, so I know the reality.
Argentina is still a developing country with a long way to go. It has millions living in abject poverty, chronic under-investment in the infrastructure, systemic corruption and a woefully inadequate government.
If you believe the UK is a spent economic power you must live in a hermetically sealed bubble of misinformation. Argentina was bankrupt 10 short years ago and is struggling to make debt repayments without plundering the resources of private institutions. And the problem CFK faces is that she has run out of other people's money to spend.
To put it in simplistic terms, an Argentine calling the UK broke is like the clinically obese kid in the playground taunting a kid carrying a couple of extra pounds. Look in the mirror.
But even if Argentina were the great economic force for the future, why would the Falkland Islanders want to work with a country that insults them and takes punitive action against them? It only serves to galvanise the population against you.

We don't want subsidised links to the mainland and we don't need them.
We don't need Arentina's protection either.Protection from what?
All we want is to go about our business and build links with all of South America without illegal interference.

Yes, we can do without our links with South America, but it's a bit sad isn't it? All it does is make us more dependent on Britain, polarises opinion on both sides and undermines peace and stability.
We don't want that, why would you?

This article is all about sharing expertise and resources. Andy Pollard has just spent a year in NZ learning about issues of great regional significance, and we are happy to share that expertise, and learn from other experts in SA.
You probably can stop that if you want to, but who is that going to hurt? And who will come out of it looking stupid? Not us.
All it does is make you feel better about yourselves for a brief moment, and annoy everybody else.

    Elaine -
In 2008/09, 13½ million people in the UK were living in households below this low-income threshold. This is around a fifth (22%) of the population.
The number of people on low incomes is still lower (just) than it was during the early 1990s but is much greater than in the early 1980s.
Around a third of all disabled adults aged 25 to retirement are living in low-income households. This is twice the rate of that for non-disabled adults. The main reason why so many disabled people are in low-income households is their high levels of worklessness. A graduate with a work-limiting disability is more likely to be lacking but wanting work than an unqualified person with no disability.
Half of all people in social housing are in low-income households compared to one in seven of those in other housing tenures.
Inner London is deeply divided: it has by far the highest proportion of people in low income but also a high proportion of people on a high income. -THE MOST AFFLUENT IN LONDON NOW HAVE INCOMES EXCEEDING 280 TIMES THAT OF THE POOREST!
Over the last decade, the poorest tenth of the population have, on average, seen a fall in their real incomes after deducting housing costs. This is in sharp contrast with the rest of the income distribution, which, on average, has seen substantial rises in their real incomes. The richest tenth of the population have seen much bigger proportional rises in their incomes than any other group.
The UK has a higher proportion of its population in relative low income than most other EU countries: of the 27 EU countries, only 4 have a higher rate than the UK. The proportion of people living in relative low income in the UK is twice that of the Netherlands and one-and-a-half times that of France.
Successive UK governments have almost erased Britain capacity to manufacture so you cannot earn your way of of the coming depression - a depression that will exceed that of 1929 in its affect upon the common man.

That's absolute crap, about 20% of the UK's GDP is generated by manufacturing or associated businesses.

I thought the point was rather obvious Sr. Roberts - Britain is failing and within five years it will be in no position to continue paying the $150,000,000 a year it presently pays to maintain the defence of the Falklands and certainly in no position to repeat its performance in 1982 so I am simply suggesting that the islanders take the opportunity to secure their future and their wealth by taking advantage of all the opportunities South America - which is the world's fastest growing economic sector- is offering.
The islanders can have the best of both worlds - keep their british citizenship, retain their autonomy....and get incredibly wealthy.

When the LAN does not stop to pick up passengers from the shanty town that is Rio Gallegos, the aircraft does not enter Argentine airspace. Your additional 3 hours is a load of rubbish.

I have seen the 1999 agreement, and when referring to LAN it states an airline from a third-party nation. At no point does it state or claim that Chile or LAN recognises Argentine sovereignty over the Falkland Islands.

Lets please stick to the facts Argentines.

It seems that Chile, particularly Puntas Arenas, values the Falkland Islands and Britain more than it does the sick psychos of Argentina.

And there is NOTHING you Argies can do about it. LAN Airlines has the aircraft to fly between Puntas Arenas and the Falklands without ever crossing Argentine territory. Even if the Stone Age Argentine radar could detect an aircraft. But I'm sure that Chile would provide a couple of F-16s and the UK a couple of Typhoons for escort purposes.

As a matter of interest, the current estimated UK defence expenditure on the Falkland Islands is £365 million or US$657 million. This is 0.03% of British GDP. So much for your quoted US$150 million. And we can keep this up for 10 thousand years!

Face it, Argies. Britain is so far beyond you that you don't have a hope in a thousand years. Why? Because the UK's GDP is around a thousand times yours. Yours talks in billions. Our talks in trillions.

Do NOT touch our citizens or our territory. We have given you one little slap on the wrist. Try it again and we will have to make it REALLY painful.

“Britain is failing and within five years it will be in no position to continue paying the $150,000,000 a year”

As I pointed out earlier, and backed up by Conqueror, you are not very good with figures (or facts) Fantazum. The Falklands garrison costs less than 1% of the entire UK defence budget. I think we can comfortably keep that up for a very long time. And when the oil flows, the Falkland Island Government have already said they will pay for their defence or as much of it as they can afford.

“Britain... certainly in no position to repeat its performance in 1982”
Incorrect. The UK learned lessons from 1982 and is in a much better position than then. What's more, Argentina is in a far worse position than it was in 1982. I doubt the Argentine military could pull the skin off a custard, let alone mount an invasion of the Falklands, even one on the same scale as 1982.

The Falklands don't need Argentina to take advantage of any opportunities, and if there was such a great advantage to being part of Argentina I'm sure they would have done it by now... Oh, and they are well positioned, if the oil flows, to get incredibly wealthy anyway...

He crossed the border wearing a jacket with the Argentinean colors(picture above) and saying that he lives in Malvinas Argentinas.

    Higuaín...Higuaín...Higuaín!

Think, only going on what I heard, I apologies if I wrongly accused Arg guy of being offside! If I get it wrong I do admit it!Rugby - yes England were crap and France won deservedly! But then we still have Wales in there boyo!!
Marcos, Sad to inform you both were seen at the airport arriving this afternoon and lots of new friends over there to follow up contact with I hear. Actually you need to look at your flag - it is skyblue - that jacket has DARK blue to me.

Off side? Where? 2 Chileans on line with Higuaín… No Chilean player protests.
    3-0 www.clarin.com/deportes/Argentina-Chile_3_568173211.html

    ---

Think, the third one was offside by little margin (its the only goal the argentine television does not show the typical offside-freeze-proof, and thats for a gooood reason), but it doesn't matter. This is not an excuse for the really catastrophic gameplay of Chile yesterday, the worst presentation I have seen since about 5 years of our national team. You deserved the win, and in some cases Argentina could also have increased the score. The Chilean players had moral totally down, possible the reason they didn't care for the offside goal anymore...

You can make your own primitive ”offside-freeze-proof” on second 9’’ and second 30’’ of the above link.
Let’s say that, if it was off side, it was by a pelo de vicuña….., impossible for the referees to judge.

Disagree, the argentine television said that it was orsai! con la lupa pero offside.
Not a good move the change Bielsa for el guaton parrillero, great guy though but his defense look like a colador as his past Boca jr. defense.
Our defense is not doing much better...

Think, on that angle of the video you have given it simple cannot be seen, as it is not a parallel recording. But maybe Marco can give you the link, where it was proven it was offside.
But it doesn't matter, as said. Argentina won deservedly, and that offline goal did not change anything which could have helped us. I don't blame the referee, he didn't do a bad job, I have seen really bad referees in other matches, so this was ok. The general rule says:
“in case of doubt due to minimal margin, judge in favour of the attack!”
No bad feelings about that (only about OUR horrible performance).

Anyway, you should be aware we have not been a real test on this day, you shouldn't believe that everythings fine now, you will probably have trouble with other teams, like Uruguay, which I see much more stable.

And yes Marco, most people in Chile were against Bielsa's departure, he was the most popular national coach we ever had, but the soccer mafia won, like always...typically Fifa struture. Unfortunately... Bichi is a good guy, but bad professional (as coach)

another issue people in argentina dont know or dont want to know, the falklands are part of the european union,so they get subsidies for many proyects, now they are receiving money for developing a container terminal near san carlos.
Regarding the military side of the picture Great Britain is part of NATO or OTAN
and so NATO is also putting money in the maintenance of the military base.
