United States President Barack Obama celebrated the contributions of Latinos to American culture and heritage Wednesday in an event that paid tribute to the US Hispanic leaders, scholars and soldiers, including those from Texas.

Obama told a crowd of several hundred attending the American Latino Heritage Forum at the Department of Interior that achievements of Hispanics have often gone unnoticed.

Still, he said, the minority group has growing influence.

“You've helped us build our cities, grow our economy, defend our country,” Obama said. “And today, for the first time in history, there is a Latina in my Cabinet and a Latina on the bench of the highest court in the land.”

The president appointed Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor and Labor Secretary Hilda Solis during the first two years in office.

Obama’s participation in the event also was seen as part of his ongoing outreach to a core constituency. Latinos voted overwhelmingly for Obama in 2008. He captured 67% of the Hispanic vote.

But recent polls show his support in the minority community is waning. Obama's approval rating among Hispanics dropped from 60% to 48% last month, according to a Gallup poll.

The US president courted Latinos over the past two weeks, attending various Hispanic Heritage Month events and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus gala.

“Latinos” lol when will these idiots learn that Latino is not a race. Mr Obama, the Latins were an ancient Italic people of the Latium region in central Italy, (Latium Vetus - Old Latium), in the first millennium BC. I wish I were a Latino, but I'm a South American and an American because this is the name of the Continent, I've got nothing to do with the Latins, they died long ago, and no, I did not help the USA in any way, actually I'll gladly destroy every city in the US, but I gues that will have to wait. Thank you :)

Xbarilox, they in the US will never learn what “Latinos” really means. It's not being taught here at private and government schools, where they aren't even taught history about the roman empire and geography. Conclusion, the schools here (and for years they are complaining about it but don't solve the problem) in the US are to keep the kids dumb dumb.
