Can the Falkland Islands achieve economic diversification borne from adversity?

The launch this month by the Falkland Islands Development Corporation (FIDC) of the Import Substitution Programme under the slogan, “Use Spades, Not Ships” bears striking parallels to the Grow More Food campaign established in war-time Britain during the Second World War. A campaign known better by its slogan – “Dig for Victory”. Read full article

Well the good news is the Malvinenses arent like Anti fascist.Well to be fair there arent too many like him lets see who could we compare the little man too well maybe Kim Jong Il,Ahmadjinejad, maybe even dear old Adolf who he proclaims such an adversion to.As I said little boy maybe a little Borges would do you good.If you cant manage to understand some decent literature maybe a visit to some nice lady might releive you of some tension although i would say it would cost because there arent many with so little subtlty to countenance lunatics like you.
One little thing I know its dificult for the likes of you to get any information but Argentina is a democracy where the people actually elected their president as recently as last Sunday.Unlike the Malvinas immigrants are welcome and are not alone entitles to vote but expected to do so.But then thats hard for little boys to comprehend.Do take care

    12 O gara

The problem O gara is none of you either realise, or indeed care about the amount of fear, animosity and hatred of Argentina your insults and threats and your government actions and threats are stirring up in the Falklands.

Animosity tends to have a very long shelf life.

I've tried highlighting this is the most stark terms to your posters but for some of you it flies right over your head. The Falklands are a political football in Argentina, it a subject used to play on raw nationalist sentiments, sentiments that go way back into your murky political and military history. It's not something the rest of the world takes as a good sign as to the maturity of your democracy.

Short of invading and exterminating the population of the Falkland Islands or forcefully removing them - something that I wouldn't put past your leaders but I would suggest is highly unlikely to get away with - there is nothing you can do to win back the Falkland Islands.

The islanders are never going to voluntarily ask for negotiations with Argentina on issues of sovereignty. The British government is never going to get away with going behind the islanders backs and ceding sovereignty... thanks mainly to the memory of the Falklands War.

Any negotiations that ever took place in the auspicious of the UN would have to include the right of the Falklands to a vote on sovereignty and they are never going to choose Argentina.

There should be closer links between the islands and Argentina, but close links, winning hearts and minds, offering aid and support - making friends has never been on the Argentine agenda. Your national character is one of thinking with your balls, rather than your head.

Rape the Falklands and you can have your way. Only you've tried that and they're having none of it! You can keep thrusting your yourselves but you'll like a bull in a china shop!

Nationalist sentiment is too simplistic, easy to play with, harder to play down!

Anti Fascist why do i have start some serious criticism before you begin a serious non confrontational argument. The reality is nobody appreciates the fears of the islanders more than an Irishperson descendant of planters which is what I am.English policy is never anything but practical faced with Chinese power Hong Kongs history counts for nothing. The London government will always do exactly what is important for the English elite.Dont delude yourself about Britishness that is a figleaf which is close to death as Salmond rules Scotland.

Yes Scotland has become a one party state since Blair's devolution policy fragmented the country and his other policies attempted to destroy everything else but the story of devolution in the UK is itself is a classic demonstration of the power of nationalism. Given the choice between the old parties and one purporting to serve national interests, the majority will always vote for the nationalists, unless that party has been maligned.

The original referendum for a Scottish government was very close, the Blair government pulled out all the stops to sell it to the Scottish people, the same was the case in Wales, where a previous referendum had resulted in a massive defeat for devolution.

There are classic examples of one party states purporting to be democratic, dominated by nationalist politics. Zimbabwe springs to mind as one extreme. Less so, Australia went through a phase with the Howard government but he was shot down in flames over his Republican agenda which the people of Australia overwhelmingly rejected.

The people of Scotland do not want independence but they like the idea of a party serving their interests. Salmond's also a shrewd politician, he runs rings around the other party leaders. But he has no chance of winning a referendum.

The British are good at banter but don't mistake it for a lack of respect, it's the exact opposite. The vast majority of people still believe in Britain and there will come a time, when the EU - which started the ball rolling with their “Regions” policy - will falls apart (soon). It's replacement will be something looking more like it's original intention - a common market.

Back to the point, nationalism is a very easy trumpet to blow, but the people blowing it are either too stupid, too opportunist, or too unscrupulous to be trusted. When the people jump to that trumpet, it's difficult to stop blowing, before too long you have a valley full of trumpet calls, an orchestra of trumpets, blowing all across the land.

anti fascist. You attack nationalism but cant see your own jationalism railing against the EU.You claim Scotland has no hope of being independent but recent opinion polls in Scotland suggest Salmond is well on the way to acheiving exactly that. This will become even closer to reality as the Tories rail ever more against the EU as Scotish attitudes like the Irish are pro EU.
You also fail to see how the practical English elite did a deal.with China over Hong Kong.As Argentina becomes more and more the food supplier to the World London will see the futileness of confronting such an important country over 2000 people. She already knows how much is being lost as Argentina grows at oriental levels but the hope of oil is keeping tensions high.

The Falklands move further away from Argentina's influence...how is that simplified and childish...? Is it only that because it reduces the impact of Argentina's imperialist ambitions?

The ship reference in the “Spades and no Spades” is not to do with naval ships but container ships that facilitate imports. I think your viewpoint is overly simplified and childish. Navy ships and container ships are two different things Marcos. You really are demonstrating the prowess of Argentina's education system!

Subjects abroad? Marcos, you really should visit the place you claim to know everything about... the truth will hit you really hard...or is that why you have no inclination to visit, because you fear the truth...

    O gara

What I'm against is small / narrow minded Nationalism, be it English, Scottish, American, Argentinian or anything else. An interest in your country & its survival is not nationalism, it's common sense. An interest in expanding your country or making resource grabs can be seen as nationalism, usually driven by corporate interests & a military/ind complex on the make!

I believe in the nation state system, although far from perfect, it offers the kind of checks and balances, a corporate dominated system of trade blocks moving ever closer to global governance can not offer. My politics can not be put in a box, I believe in nationalised utilities and public transport, a competitive economy for medium to small sized business, a limit to the size a business can expand to, effectively a ban on monopoly corporate capitalism.

If the Scottish really did want independence then that would be their choice. I don't want it, the lowland Scots were speaking English long before most of England was, we are the same Anglo-celtic people and we have the same interests, on the same island. Division is nuts.

I believe in a common market and nations working together. I can understand how a federated Europe could serve the people of Europe but our history, language, culture and systems of government are so different, so diverse that it is basically the forcing together of nations into one supper state, without the support, or approval of the people concerned. A recipe for disaster!

The Irish rejected the EU, they want it no more than the French or the British. The Irish govt kept coming back with a new referendum and the EU kept funding that referendum 90% more than the No campaign. Fear plays a big part too, people are consistently told of the consequences of not being part. I don't exaggerate when I call the EU a Soviet, it's effectively how it is run. It's there to serve corporate interests - in effect its the result of the mother of all SWAT and PETAL analysis.

That can't see that what we have in common is our humanity and respecting that would mean they abandon their lies and propaganda and accepted the right of the Falkland Islanders to determine their own sovereignty. The same way the British government accepts that the Falklands, Scotland, England, Ireland, Wales, the Isle of Mann, Guernsey, Jersey, Sark, ALderney, etc all have the right of self determination.

I wonder if Argentina would ever allow any of their provinces that right?

But what is your fascination with Emma? She was a crap MLA and I am truly glad to see the back of her, and I know many others feel the same. Her Election campaign was full of naive statements and therefore her expectations were incorrect. She couldn’t understand the sensitivities of the job and believed that everything, no matter how politically or commercially sensitive, should be made fully public. And thus her excuse shifts the blame from her onto others, while in reality, it was her narrow-minded, stubborn and backward attitude that forced herself out.

I would never dream of popping up on an Argentine blog and trying to wind people up.

If that is all you are interested in, I am going to treat you with the contempt you deserve. No one deserves respect if they come on-line and start attacking the right of other people to their own sovereignty. They deserve the label Nazi or fascist.

If you can accept the Falkland Islanders have the right to determine their own future, we can have a decent discussion.

@ 44 Mussolini was one of the men that Peron admired with his heart and mind, you should know that.
    Jorge L. Borges on Peronism:
“Dictatorships breed oppression, dictatorships breed servility, dictatorships breed cruelty; more loathsome still is the fact that they breed idiocy. Bellboys babbling orders, portraits of caudillos, prearranged cheers or insults, walls covered with names, unanimous ceremonies, mere discipline usurping the place of clear thinking... Fighting these sad monotonies is one of the duties of a writer. Need I remind readers of Martín Fierro or Don Segundo that individualism is an old Argentine virtue.”

The Brits threw out a few trespassers in 1833 - nothing more. It's what happens to trespassers.

1833 – January 2nd, the Clio and Tyne arrive in the Falkland Islands to find the Sarandi moored at Puerto Luis.

Cmdr. John James Onslow of the Clio, orders the Argentine flag to be lowered and hoists the Union Jack in its place. Lieutenant-Colonel José María Pinedo offers no resistance other than to protest.

On January 5th, the Sarandi evacuates the garrison together with two of Vernet’s settlers, Joaquin Acuña and Matthew González, and their wives.

Onslow persuades some twenty-four of Vernet’s settlers to remain and appoints William Dickson as the British Representative on the Islands.

February 8th, seven of the mutineers involved in Mestivier’s murder are shot by firing squad in a public execution.

Also in February, US Secretary of State, Edward Livingston seeks the opinion of Francis Baylies, who writes, ” The existing Government have repeatedly denounced the intrusive government under which the decree of the 10th of June (was made) as mutinous, and have recognized none of their laws and decrees… It may be asked why should they exhibit such pertinacity in sustaining Vernet? In my opinion they should have abandoned him without hesitation, had not the interest of some of the leading men in the Govt. been in a degree involved… Vernet will eventually be compelled to relinquish his claims to the Falklands which will become in some way or other the exclusive domain of the ruling family. – Hence the strong effort to sustain Vernet.”

The British Foregin Office did NOT fund Mussolini, that was a lie, like all your lies on the Falkland Islands. Anyone can invent history, it takes intelligence to research it and accept the facts irrespective of whose side you are on.

“You will get ample opportrunities to exercise that “Famous British Stiff Upper Lip” in the next many years, my dear British Squatters and Squatterettes.......... ”

In that case you will get plenty of opportunites to learn what it means.

    I’m not a chauvinist!
    I wrote “Squatterettes… didn’t I?

    Besides……………………..

    It’s not a threat…..
    It’s a political inevitability.

a stiff upper lip is what the Argentine people will need now as CFK will go on milking them dry, so don't cry for me Argentina. as will not cry for you when your country is as dried up as the old hag you have running it is, good luck to you as you will need it over the next year or two.

I believe on the basis of the British occupation of Río de la Plata, Argentina is in fact part of Britain.

She is a traitor to Argentina.

But I do not think UK finished. Argentina went through far worse, may family moved to Canda, we could not get money out of the bank, people begging on street, riots. UK is long way from this. But Argentina has come back in just a few years. UK economy is one of strongst in EU, so we should be careful to write them of.

When was this? Argentina invade las Malvinas in 1833 as a result of this and papal bull malvinas are belong to us. If you are saying Britain invade Argentina and Argentina belong to UK I would like to know facts.

I do not believe Britain could EVER invade Argentina, we are too strong for them! They can never defeat our macho Army and our macho Navy and our heroic Ari Force. This is inpossible.

    1982 was flucke.

    @53 Think,
lts late but its fun. l should think, Cher Think, that “squatterette” would mean a small squatter(as cigarette means a small cigar)& the feminine of squatter would be “squatteress”.
You should know this, Think because you are, in fact a squatter yourself. An Andean squatter.
l doubt that its inevitable as you say. lf it was you & all the other deluded malvinistas wouldn't have to get so emotional on these forums. You would just sit back & wait. No, its certainly not inevitable. Only in your dreams.

    (60) Isolde; my little “Coquette”

“Squaterette”, in this case, is not a diminutive……
Is the universally accepted feminine word for “Squatter”…..

    As in:
    “Devilette”:

[[not true, we could, but it would cost a lot of lives,, but it can be done, we would most likely
Use other methods, [example] [EMP]. To start with.

They can never defeat our macho Army and our macho Navy and our heroic Ari Force.
You do not have a macho army; it’s a conscript army, [2/10]
Your navy cannot find the ocean, let alone a ship to sail it, ]
Your airforce, , the pilots are ok, your planes and leaders are total crap,,,,,
    FLIPPO
A decent blog as sorts, at least you recognise that the British, can never be turned
And never turn your back on them, they are a small, but very powerful nation, that will take on anyone [if required]

We don’t fight to lose, we aim to win every time, all the time,
And when we do lose,,,,we come a very close second ???

On the basis of the British invasion of Río de la Plata I have been able to establish that Argentina is in fact owned by Great Britain.

I have been tabling a series of motions at the UN in order to officially establish this claim to Argentina. There is historical president for this, on the basis of an almost 200 year invasion of the Falkland Islands by a German and some British ex patriots, Argentina claims the Falkland Islands.

I can establish as historical fact that Río de la Plata was invaded by Britain and that this claim was never renounced, there is over 200 years of continued British claim to Argentina.

This makes all Argentines suject to British law and taxation. I am planning to get Buenos Aires renamed Port of Britain. Argentina will be called Bairdland, after the leader of British forces in the first occupation of Río de la Plata.

It is important to state that this did not happen just once - as in the Argentine claim to the Falklands... but twice!

    @67Malvin,
Wouldn't be worth it. When the shooting stopped & the dust settled, look at all the problems that Argentina has that we would inherit.
No thanks, you solve your own problems.
