And Uruguay is stupid then? OMG, you are so biased. URUGUAY isn't but fullfilling its constant, strong and public support to Argentine sovereignty rights over the islands. This is not new. URUGUAY is only being COHERENT and complying with its international obligations, something the UK is bullying not to. This Mercopress is incredibly biased...

It might be the case that Uruguay is forced to tow the Argentine line, since you still want to screw them over when they wish to extend their own port facilities at Nueva Palmira, facilities which will compete with your own in Bennies Hairies.

Again Argentina wants everything its own way, to the detriment of everyone else. Everyone else has to compromise, or give away things, except Argentina.

    Yawn, nothing changes does it?

There are rumors in BA that Cancilleria is working on a plan with Brasil and Uruguay to pressure cruise companies. In general terms they will bann these companies from their ports if they include Malvinas (falklands) as a destinatios. They hope to make them decide between the continental ports and the islands. Ouch...

It is easy for Argentina to bully Uruguay not so easy to bully Chile. Chilenos are business people and Argentina needs them more than they need Argentina same with Brazil. It is like Mexico trying to bully the USA, not going to happen.

Just prooves my point in a previous comment section that Argentina cannot and should never be trusted. What is bieng aplied to Urugay will ultimatly be applied to all Argentinas neighbours in their effort to try to bring us down. But rest assured what ever she does will never change our constitutional right to determine our own future with the Country of our choosing and Argentina is not and never will be that choice so get used to it folk.

Kelper - trusting or not trusting Argentina is largely irrelevant. As this article suggests Argentina's neighbours continue to say one thing and yet do another. You will find that this continues as Argentina is all talk and no trousers.

Regarding the oil expo and Marcos's regular uniformed ejaculations I would advise everyone to look at the two RNSs released today. The big Institutional Investors are taking major positions and all crossing the 3% threshold. Looks like they know where this is going and getting in to multibag their way to big profits. Ultimatly these big boys are worth more than Argentina but I suppose that is not really that hard.

@18 briton: territorial ambition? it is funny how you expect Argentina to bully and press and threaten uruguay, NOTHING FURTHER FROM REALITY THAN THAT.

The logic of invading, using and bullying neighbors nowadays has more to do with Europe than with LatinAmerica. It happened in Europe in the World Wars and it happens again now with the situation on some members of the Union that are suffering the consequences of a dishonest and nasty purposes that some other members had when they decided to let them join.

The Pentagon and friends would love to see SouthAmerica divided into a million pieces. History proves that the British Empire and the USA had always made profit on wars between latinamerican ( I wonder if at least part of the profits ever reached the british or northamerican workers, I guess not) . And writing headlines like the one in this article is just a try to promote domestic conflicts in here.

What can be more ambitious than having a military base at an strategic place like Islas Malvinas on the other side of the world?

Nothing to be surprised about, colonial empires just invade, that's what they do. At least they could turn the Malvinas into a place for developing energy resources that are not contaminating and old-fashioned like petrol.

Malviner - I don't know who will end up bringing the SeaLion field into production. Could be BP or Exxon just as much as it could be Shell, Tullow or Hess??? However, I think it may be an Asian oily, possibly CNOC or the Koreans. The fact that the Singapore gvt own a large slice of RKH and therefore the Sealion, Casper, Casper South/Shona and Beverley discoveries (and the countless smaller sands that lie above and below these finds) gives me a clue that this oil will end up in the East.

2012 will reveal, but regardless of your desperate hope that such a thing will not come to pass, this field will go into production and there is nothing you can do about it. Just sit back and watch the show from the cheap seats :-)

@32: I have nothing to do with war promoters, no matter Argentinian, British or else. Do you think that the dictators governing Argentina by then had to do with Argentinians so much? The popular choice was not their source of power, their support was coming from abroad and from the little group of agroexporter argentinian elite.

Tatcher needed a war, Argentinian dictators also thought they needed one.

I stand for what I believe and I do not hesitate to be critic of Argentinians, nationality is not the first thing I see when I meet a person.

Colonialism is wrong, no matter who practices it. And the Malvinas is a scarf that the British Empire in decadence left. What is wrong is wrong, always.

The UK authorities pointing at the rest of the world with weapons of war is not fair and it makes the world a more insecure place. And I am sure it is not even what a lot of british people want. But how can they choose when there is a government that represses expressions of disagreement and protests in London? Imposing discipline with violence... Is that democracy?

Claiming for sovereignty of a land on the other side of the world is already madness, and a lack of respect for International Diplomacy.

British Government will go on playing unfair, corporate media will go on broadcasting lies, the truth is that the colonizers are not Argentinian ones. Down with contanimating colonizers, down with childish “self-determination” of the little group of settlers who live on the little cash that colonialism leaves them, giving away SouthAmerican resources to foreign corporations own by lazy investors addicted to the dirty cash of petrol, groups that care nothing about the british, the argentinians of anybody that works for them. They don't even care about the future of their grandchildren.

Down with warrior and death promoters, down with the empire propaganda. And DOWN in a PACIFIC and DIPLOMATIC way, as it was expected to happen even from british authorities before 1982.

How is 'Britain' playing unfair? What lies? Be specific.

Marcos- when please has England ever attempted to search for and exploiut oil offshore?
FACT- UK has NEVER attempted any Exploration - let alone talk of exploitation!! If they have/are - please give me the FACTS - not bullshit!

    Who controls the zone?

    Who Issues Licences

Who controls and sets Safety Standards.

To whom do the Companies make their Environmental Impact plans and Oil Spill continigency Plans proposals to?

Do please tell me if you find the words “England” or London in their address?

Give you a clue - The Islands are no longer an old fashioned Colony(like what you want to make us!) - but we are a self governing territory with our own offshore EEZ.

Is the folllowing information ”British”, ”Clear” and ”Fresh” enough for you; Islander1? :
    1) ”…………..a cluster of British-based, London-listed companies have rushed to explore the new frontier of the Falklands basin.

    2) ”Licences are awarded by the Falkland Islands governor in consultation with the British Foreign Office, with terms of 9 percent royalties and 26 percent corporate tax. ………………..”

    3) ”A British parliamentary report last year asked for clarity over responsibility for oil spills and raised questions about smaller companies' ability to foot the bill for a big spill…………….”

Is it only my impression, or does Mercopress get more inflamed with time? No, I'm pretty sure that's not impression alone. Something's changed: 1) either something has happened that has not pleased Mercopress editors; 2) or, less excitingly, Mercopress editor in chief has changed and so has writing style (namely, to a more shill direction).

Barbara Tuchman wrote an excellent history book by the name of 'The March Of The Folly' whose reading should be obligatory for all people in all governments before they swear into office. It analises how goverments in world history between Troy and Vietnam, pursued policies contrary to their own interest, despite advice and warnings against such policies, before they were put to work. And with this short comment I believe I'll call it a day. Remember the dead, Argentines and British, that 1982 folly brought upon us: our tears dried, but we won't forget our children. Season greetings to all, friends and former foes! Argie aka Salvador
