Argentina now takes Falklands’ dispute to satellite imagery

The Argentine newspaper Ambito Financiero reported on Friday, without revealing sources, that oil exploration rig Leiv Eiriksson, contracted by two oil companies to drill to the south of the Falkland Islands “was found, on Thursday, exploring in Argentine waters”, according to ‘irrefutable’ satellite images. This simply gets better and better..... :-)

Not only are the FI potentially sitting on $180b of oil but they might even be drilling it from RG territory.....ha, ha, ROFL.....

Its time the RG military got the rowing boat, glider and pea shooter out.

More Argie government propaganda, and not written by a professional navigator it seems - it isn't possible have 76 minutes of anything in lat/long position!

Moreover, if you look at the picture it is obvious that everything in that cluster is much nearer to the Falklands than to Argentina, so I suppose that means they are talking bollocks as usual because that would put it well inside the Falklands exclusion zone and not anywhere near the Argie one.

Give up. It isn't yours and never will be. Get over it.

This propaganda will clearly be on banners in Argieland as we speak, getting the locals really upset because someone is actually managing to get hydrocarbons out of the ground, when they're not able to.

“Peronism says that this is within 200 miles of the blah blah blah blah blah” You walked out of talks on oil discovery and fishing, so just go into the corner and be butthurt.

@2 correcto re the 76 minutes.... and those positions are given to an accuracy of about 1 metre ( 1/100th part of one second of arc...) .... I wonder what bit of the rig they are talking about....

Credibility of this piece of reporting from a 'much respected' RG journal is somewhere south of zero.

”Argentine Foreign Affairs minister ....... admits frustration at the lack of echo from the different complaints the Argentine government has sent out, and admits a fundamental problem: “It is the ‘kelper’ (Falklands’) government which awards the exploration licenses and therefore the complaint should be addressed to them, but doing so would in some way acknowledge sovereignty which contradicts the basic (sovereignty) claim“”

This is too funny for words....

They seem to shoot themselves in the foot every time they try to protest. Quoting a longitude that is meaningless, showing photos of radar aerials in their presentation to the UN as evidence of “militarisation” that are actually scientific ionospheric radar with no military application - grasping at straws..........

Yes, not only are they not sure who to complain to, but they really don't seem sure quite what to base their protest on - either there is a line, one side of which is ours and one theirs (which they incorrectly claim the rig has crossed), or else the waters are all theirs , in which case this rig is no different to the one that has been drilling for the past 2 years, and its exact “satellite image” position is irrelevant. If they are complaining about.
According to this article, the Foreign Affairs ministry says “ it is the first time that this has happened since the diplomatic conflict bubbled to the surface in January” - this seems to imply that the Ocean Guardian was not drilling in Argentine waters - maybe it was in FALKLAND ISLAND waters................

Argi Fantasy never fails to amaze! - This is a Drilling Platform - it is NOT a seismic survey vessel!! And it does not “drop anchor” normally either - it lives and drills in DEEP Water using satelites, computers and positioning propellors to maintain its position 24 hours a day.

They really insult our intelligence, but we need to counter this or as with the Nazis people seem to believe lies if you tell them enough. To fabricate this kind of rubbish is laughable. Next will be they will make some kind of territorial incursion up ...similar to the Poles attacking Germany before WW2 kicked off.

The 'satellite image' of the vessels is in fact from MarineTraffic.com which uses Google maps for their base image. They then ovelayed it (inaccurately) on the normal GoogleEarth image.

Clearly the Argie idiots think the rest of us are going to be taken in by this nonsense.

    Greed is the nations pride,
Tell massive lies to pretend that we're not

Wouldn't it be just too delicious if a huge cavern(layer, whatever)of oil sat across the dividing line of both our territories.
We drilled into it from our side & pumped up oil from theirs.!
Then refined it into petrol & sold it back to them.
l'd love to see their reactions.

@20 to be honest, it's quite possible to do this. Most prospecting companies wouldn't go near Argentina with a long stick at the moment, and even when they do find hydrocarbons like gas, they haven't got the ability to get it out of the ground (fracking, etc). Add to that the fact they have to sell it to the state at a fraction of it's market value and most companies give the country a wide birth, taking their expertise elsewhere.

Given that Argentina also claims most of the South Atlantic sea-bed as theirs (it's close to them, therefore it's theirs) , it's quite likely you might drill into fields that sit on both sides. It's not an issue though because by the time they get the ability to realise it, it'll be the year 2300 and we'll all be at war with the Dramajian Space Empire.

“We are quite used to Argentine misinformation and imagination”.

“there is a lot of artistic licence put into that (satellite) image - reality is quite different”.

These sentences describes perfectly Argintinas position on this whole issue.

If the rigs were in Argie water then they should challange them, but they can't do anything because the British military protect Falklands waters, this is not going to change.

The only way to deal with Argentina is “talk softly and carry a big stick”, it is the only language the Criollo Banditos understand.

They have run out of South America to steal from the Indians, now they are trying to steal the South Atlantic from the British. Unfortunatly for the Banditos, unlike Atahualpa the British have more than just bows and arrows with which to defend their territory against theiving Conquistadors.

Have they let you out again Malvinero?

In Britain they call it “care in the community”. Either that or you had another of your little mini strokes. You must learn to control your anger and keep taking the medicine that the nice people in white coats offer you.

Are you FINISHED? Or is it your little dreams of empire building that are FINISHED.

@conqueror - the Argentinians could be taken on board HMS Vanguard for a guided tour at drydock and they would still spout the same retarded rubbish about us deploying nuclear weapons to the south atlantic. Sounds like a case of trident envy to me.

One of my mates saidyesterday that in his opinion as long as Argentina existed (without a total withdraw of soverignty claims) it would pose a threat to the Falklanders. He saw an Argentinan interviewed on tv about the islanders who advocated removing the falklanders. My friend was incensed by this and labelled it ethnic cleansing.

He previously had spoken to me about the Falklands (while setting the world to rights) and had stated that he only thought that a few Argentinians were interested in the dispute, and that they were generally good people.

Now he would quite happily see Argentina go up in a fireball.

Well Done Argentina, all you've done is get ordinary British people angry enough at you to wish to see your country come to harm. Way to go CFK and the Malvinista crowd..............

That is true SHB, Argentina thinks its winning some diplomatic battle but all it is doing is strengthening UK opinion that these people are nasty and only pretending to be peaceful and we all know what happens when the British folk get incensed.

Britain is a mighty power by any measure in comparison to Argentina and could destroy Argentina in any number of ways not to mention it holds all the power positions.

So effectively by annoying the British people and the government all the UK is going to do is refuse anything from Argentina and Argentina simply cannot respond in economic, political or military terms.

Well done CFK you've just blown any chance of a peaceful resolution to the dispute, your grandstanding, idiotic and retarded behavior means you now have exactly zero chance of getting the UK to agree to any of your ever increasingly bizarre demands.......

@40 - Pro Kelper article - Thats rich coming from you, after all its not as if CFk and the rest of the argentine politicians outburst, false accusations and hypocrisy is unbaised or not pro-argentina propaganda now is it.

I think you will find the article was reporting on the facts of yet another false and biased argentine accusation and propaganda attempt, therefore it can not ever be deemed as a Pro Kelper article when it only states the facts about the accusation that was made by argentina itself.

Or is that you saw all the comments here by us brits and islanders, and realised just how intelligent we are after we quickly all worked out the so called satalite imagery was not satalite imagery at all, but taken from google earth with the ship icons super imposed on the imagery, and was likely a screen shot taken from MarineTraffic.com. Which happens to use Google earth as their base image for satalite view, and happens to use those very same ship icons. Which by the way, such ship icons are not position accurately on such map and can be 10 miles or more away at the time.

Fact is they were 190 miles south of the Falklands and a good 350-450 miles from the nearest argentine territorial waters of 12 nautical miles from the argentina coast, as recongnised by international law. Even if they had strayed into the argentina economic zone, its not your territorial waters and they have the right to freely pass through under international marine law granting innocent passage to all vessels.

Please don't let us get sidetracked into matters related to Bolivia. We must concentrate on the INVADING, IMPLANTED, GENOCIDAL Spanish nazis of argieland. There are over 40 million of them. The question must be - How many of them are capable of doing anything except producing LIES?
Let's take a look at the retard @44 & 46. I forget where he's from except that he has said that it is in S. America but is not argieland. Let us ask one simple question. Is there a country on the South American continent that has not been stolen from its indigenous inhabitants by Spaniards, Portuguese, Italians? But there's an even better bit. There is actually a RETARD (South American obviously) who still wants to claim that the “Inter caetera” papal bull of 1493 is still valid in terms of Spanish and Portuguese claims to the “New Word” (the Americas). Perhaps the United States should be careful of who it supports. Bearing in mind the increasing Hispanic element in the U.S. population, could we see the renaming of New York as New Madrid? Could our argie contributors envisage the renaming of Manhattan as Nuevo Malvinas? The U.S. West Coast is well sprinkled with Hispanic names. Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Jose, Santa Barbara. We should bear in mind territorial integrity. After all, the United States, unlike the Falkland Islands, is actually physically connected to South America by land that is above water! Surely the Spanish assistance to the American colonists, covertly from 1775 and openly from 1779 onward justifies their sovereignty!

@54-5 “honest, diplomatic and respectful” >> not exactly notable qualities of the Argentinian people as a whole, let's be frank. Once she takes up her role as Chief Whinger to the UK she can write emails like this one (http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/letter-falklands-future-1083163.html) from her predecessor, who outlined how easy it would be for Argentina to win at the ICJ and then didn't go to the ICJ.

In the Malvinas Islands issue, your country used the military force to steal the territories of Argentina. In addition, uk use its ridiculous and pirate war vessels to maintain this usurpation. Of course, your country denied to discuss or negotiate because it doesn´t have any valid argument to steal the terriories and resources of South America.

Poster 66, the thing Britain must not do is stoop to the level of the Argentine government.

The show at the UN was so ridiculous it wasn't even funny and every country out there would absolutely know.

Here are two of the fantastic examples.
    1. Secret military radar - The radar in the picture isn't a military radar in fact its a scientific radar operated by the University of Leicester. LOL!
    2. Claiming HMS Vanguard is in South American waters when it is actually alongside in the UK, not that the UK would put one in their waters given its designed to hit targets from way out of range of other subs/surface ships/helicopters etc and then to stick the final nail in the coffin they posted another picture of a submarine from a low grade UK newspaper.

I personally thought it was a brilliant comedy show and no doubt so did the international community when they reviewed the so called evidence.

And for this reason the UK doesn't need to lower itself to these insults and silly lies that obviously get found out in about 10 seconds by military analysts around the world. You could just imagine USA's CIA and other agencies laughing their socks off at these claims.

@68 Can the University of Leicester send their argentine-certified death-radar back and ask for the scientific one they ordered? Does the UK have a time-space corridor to let HMS Vanguard and HMS Dauntless be militarising the South Atlantic from being at anchor in the UK?

All this not-militarising the south atlantic with not-warships and scientific instrumentation is probably making the Argentinians really upset and threatened right now.

This is so funny. To the RG's the Falklands themselves are Argentine waters, so, as Ambito points out this is a problem for them to complain about one particular rig with satellite imagery as it shows an acceptance of Falklands waters. To me I think if the RG's claim the whole continental shelf we should too - just drill a few miles off their coast. Give the colonial aspiring RG's something to moan about. Just keep the nuclear sub popping up every once in a while to warn them off.

@71 It gets worse. They complain about the importance of continental shelves as a measure of defining national territory, but technically Antarctica isn't on theirs. Then they suddenly decided they wanted the South Georgia and Sandwich islands, that have never ever ever had a connection with. They're basically knee deep in hypocrisy, splashing all the hypocrisy on their faces.. wiping the hypocrisy over the walls... and claiming large parts of antarctica as a colony.

If it wasn't so pathetic, it would be hilarious.

”Ambito says that the Argentine Foreign Affairs minister has sent notes of discouragement to the companies involved: to oil companies as well as the accompanying ships and support vessels. But also admits frustration at the lack of echo from the different complaints the Argentine government has sent out, and admits a fundamental problem: “It is the ‘kelper’ (Falklands’) government which awards the exploration licenses and therefore the complaint should be addressed to them, but doing so would in some way acknowledge sovereignty which contradicts the basic (sovereignty) claim”.“

This quote is an absolute gem. It single handedly proves that Argentina is peddling propaganda and lying to the world and the UN. They claim it is the English that are stealing ”their” resources in the South Atlantic, one of the major factors of their current anger, frustrations and international protests. But this proves that the Argentine Government is fully aware that FIG issue the hydrocarbon licences and they spread misinformation, knowing full well that it is not true. There is your proof of Argentine propaganda Argentines.

@58 You've got it all wrong again, micro-pr*ck. But I see you didn't dare identify yourself. Let's see now. In 1833, a single British vessel arrived at the Falkland Islands to find a foreign military garrison intent on creating a penal colony on sovereign British territory. The garrison was, quite properly, required to leave. Various South American gauchos, brought to the Islands by one Luis Vernet, an individual subsequently arrested and removed from the Islands by the United States for criminal acts of piracy, were asked to remain and were actually paid, in silver, by the British captain to replace the worthless paper issued by Vernet. There! A perfectly accurate and valid statement of the situation. Now let's turn to your drivel about Britain having no interest in negotiation. This is quite easy to understand. How many times has argieland invaded the Falklands? Obviously we can start with Jewett the pirate. Then Vernet was OK until he became a pirate governor. Then there was Mestivier the dead and Pinedo the runner. Now it gets difficult. There was Fitzgerald in 1964 and the 'Condors' in 1966 and the argie naval special forces later that same year. And Fernandez tried again in 1968. 1982. And who knows how many more? So, after NINE invasions, the Falkand Islanders have told the British government not to negotiate about sovereignty. How is this difficult to understand? Let me put it another way. If a certain cuntry had invaded your country NINE times, wouldn't you be reluctant to discuss your ownership of your country with that cuntry?

If this is too difficult for you, the best thing for you to do is to move. You will fit right in in argieland. They're stupid as well.

The British military recovered the Islands after they were illegally seized by the UP, today they are simply defending British territories S. Atlantic/Antarctica against naked Argentinian expansionism and colonial ambitions.

The British don’t negotiate because there is nothing to negotiate, when you look at the facts not the fiction, you don’t have a claim to anything outside mainland S. America.

You need to understand what 'Argentinian waters' are. They are at best a moveable feast and at the moment comprise the whole of the Southern Atlantic as far as they are concerned.

They have also fabricated this claim in the most ludicrous manner possible, please see 15 ChrisR above.

The Argentinians are very 'Alice in wonderland' with the use of the English language “When I use a word,” Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, “it means just what I choose it to mean -- neither more nor less.” sums them up nicely. Liars is another good word to describe the government.
