Uruguayan president Jose Mujica said that the presence of Prince William, heir to the British Crown, in the Malvinas Islands is a gesture “not at all nice” and called for the dispute with Argentina not to become military because it’s no good for anybody, least for the region. Read full article

There is a difference between supporting Argentina and following whatever nonsense they wish to spout slavishly and this falls into the latter category. This is a SEARCH AND RESCUE HELICOPTER PILOT, he gets no special priveliges being a prince and HAS TO DO THE SAME DUTIES AS EVERYONE ELSE.

All this does is show Mujica is Kirchner's bitch, he needs to grow a spine. Muppet.

I truely feel sorry for Uruguayan's having to endure the leadership of a man that is clearly at argentinas beck and call. CFK most have phoned him the night before to tell him to make a public statement about Prince william being in the falklands not being a nice gesture. Funny things is i fail to see what it has to do with Uruguay in the first place, or how if any effect prince william being in the falklands has on argentina let alone Uruguay, other than helping to save the lives of fishermen from argentine and uruguayan fishing boats if they ever came into danger.

The guy is CFK's Lapdog that comes crawling to CFK's every whim, with his tongue out ready to lick her shoes clean for her. Pathetic lol.

This is so daft it's hilarious. Prince William on a SAR deployment is not provocative. Argentina simply chooses to claim they are provoked by it for political purposes. Why Mujica has involved himself is anyone's guess.

Wouldn't it be convienient if some Argentine ship needs his services - especially if they were on one of their “intrude in Falklands waters” missions at the time. Maybe one of our HK subs could nudge a boat in that direction??

Uruguay needs to get on the side of the winners (Brits) and leave the losers behind (Argies). Uruguay can cash in big time by partnering up with the Brits and offering its ports etc for the 4.6 Billion barrels of oil that will start flowing soon. The Argies will standby and see all the oil that could have saved them (for a few years anyway) flow up the Rio de Plata to Montevideo :)

Justin, I've finally found someone with a good head on his shoulders when it comes to describing Jose Mujica's shortcomings. Started when he lifted the veto on Nestor Kirchner's candidacy to Mercosur's pro-tempore presidency. It was followed by accepting the Kirchner's trade barriers. How did he answered? By going two or three times to see Kirchner and get played like a fool for that power-hungry woman. Then, he joins the countries that promised to blockade the FALKLAND ISLANDS FISHING SHIPS! Where I come from we call his acftions LICKING SOMEONES' BOOTS! And, by the way, I don't believe Argentina has any right -under international law- to economically blockade the FALKLAND ISLANDS.
Finally, although a US citizen, I was born in Uruguay.

From having seen the economic blockade on Naboo, Jaja binks raises their hopes to defeat the droid army, but ultimately it all leads to Senator Palpatine being a Sith and creating the galactic empire.

I'm not trying to draw attention to a certain president looking like the emperor or the fact Darth Vader realises it was all peronist ball-juice and chucks him down an energy conduit at the end either.

First off, I want to correct one of my lines: I meant to say by that power hungry President, not for. Of course, I should have added money-hungry to that description. The minute she learned that the Brits found oil in the waters near the FALKLAND ISLANDS, she stepped up her plan to muster world support for her so called “mission” and... Timmerman fell flat on his face! Then President Obama sided with the Brits. And it keeps going on and on and on! She's trying to be remembered as the woman who ended up being more poular than Eva Peron. Good luck!

As a Uruguayan citizen, I apologise for our president's statement. Such nonsensical utterances distressingly frequent. Please remember he never finished school and he's had a difficult life. I am also ashamed of my president's toadying up to Argentine demands. If anyone knows what Argentine bullying is, it's Uruguay, and bullies do not respect appeasement. I hope the Falklands eventually become independent under British protection, and I only wish Uruguay enjoyed British protection too.

@21 I cannot speak for the British government (although I can ask my MP if you want) but just as a British citizen. A little look at the history books will tell you that Britain played an important part in Uruguay becoming an independent country. If you want British protection, I suggest you ask for it. Perhaps you could offer some Sovereign Base areas and naval facilities. And distance yourself from some belligerent people. Your choice, but you can't have something you don't ask for!

I am a Brit living in Urguay (pop 4.5M) with the awful Argentina (pop 45M) next door.

Please tell me Brits, apart from keeping his mouth shut over this, what should Mujica do?

It is OK for you sitting in the UK, many thousands of miles away, pontificating about another country who tries very hard to do the best for her people of all races and cultures.

Mujica started off his presidency very well, but as a resident here (with a cedula), I am loath to second guess the strain this man is under dealing with these terrible, two faced wannabee gangsters over the Plate.

As a Uruguayo, 21 ynsere has every right to post what he did.

I believe that when a country opens their hearts to my wife and I, which Uruguay has, I am most certainly NOT going to stand by and listen to my British 'colleagues' bad mouthing it when they really are not close enough to the situation on the ground to judge.

It would be better if this “prince” once in your life begins to work of something without doing stupid things, traveling around the world. It´s very easy and very nice to travel around the world spending a lot of money of others. Someone knows how much money it was spent to do, this stupid travel, to the Malvinas Islands? I think that it is very expensive and a lot of fuel is needed to move this huge war vessel from uk to the Islands to do this stupid things!. I´m very lucky because I´m not a uk taxpayer. It is very nice to be in the place of this “pince” who has a lot of privileges to obtain what he wants without a serious work and without making any effort. Please don´t lie anymore, all the world knows that this ridiculous “prince” it´s only a privileged pirate who is traveling around the stolen territories by your country and he is only doing stupid things using a war vessel. Nobody in South America believe in this pirate “prince” and obviously nobody neither believe in his brother harry who is more pathetic than william. Please UK don´t lie anymore !

This 'prince' is in Falklands as part of a normal routine posting at a base build to defend civilised people from you guys.
Get sick of you guys saying don't lie when that is all we get from Argentina. You defended Galtieri and then later claimed he lied to you and you didn't know, you defend all the other lies up to the collapse of 2002 and then later claim you didn't know and were lied to. Now you have a president who is friends with Syria, Chavez, North Korea, Iran - all with shocking human rights records. She is leading Argentina to economic destruction and covering up the hyper inflation. Yet in a year or so you will say “The president lied to us but we didn't know”
Get a life or do the decent thing and escape to an english speaking country.

@26 I'm going to give you a very simple answer. Have you forgotten BRITISH history? Remember the Battle of Crecy? The English outnumbered 38,000 to 16,000. What happened? When the Spanish sent the Armada to transport troops for an invasion of England, what did England do? Did it bumble about muttering that the Spanish force of 151 ships and 55,000 men was too big to resist? At the Battle of Trafalgar, Nelson and Collingwood had 33 vessels to oppose 41 in the Franco-Spanish fleet. Who won that? To put it another way, you have to stand up for yourself. Would it be worth Uruguay remembering its national motto? Or Britain's role in it becoming independent of Argentina and Brazil?
    @27 Mujica is senile!
@29 Did Argfags set up bases on British territory? See whether you can understand a few things. After buying a French settlement, Spain tried to push Britain off the Islands. Didn't work. Because Britain was prepared to go for a war that Spain knew it couldn't win. South Americans may think they can “inherit” territory. The rest of the world says you can't. Rebel Spanish colonists got a “treaty” for one reason. Britain's main aim is trade. The rebel colonists had NO right to set foot on British territory and certainly no basis on which to claim that territory as theirs. And only the foreign garrison of the rebel colonists was told to leave. What is it about you RETARDS that you cannot accept documented HISTORY?
@33 Please identify the link between Prince William, Duke of Cambridge (aka Flt Lt William Wales) and HMS Dauntless. How did he manage to get to the Falkland Islands before the destroyer?
@36 Congratulations. Your stupidity and depravity are now about equal. Now here's a suggestion. If you cannot manage to imbue any of your comments with education, honesty, intelligence, reason and truth, you would be best advised to say nothing EVER.

If he sees Cristina as a leader worthy of respect I'd rather trust his judgement than yours. 48 British_Kirchnerist - Whilst I respect Mujica for his honesty and sincerity, it must not be forgotten that as a guerilla he attacked a legal, democratic and completely constitutional government. He did nothing at all to defend democracy before the dictatorship or during the dictatorship, which only became possible as a result of the attack of Mujica's group, the Tupamaros, on the legal government. Clearly there is no excuse for even such treason to be punished in the way it was in the dictatorship's dungeons, but it happened to thousands, guilty and innocent, in the 1970s and early 80s. Many died under torture. Whilst Mujica has clearly changed, he is no Mandela. At this time, practically all opposition leaders in Uruguay as well as many members of Mujica's own ruling party and business leaders are clamouring for him to face up to the Argentine government's bullying. The previous president, Dr. Vázquez, faced up to them fearlessly, but the one before, Jorge Batlle, actually whimpered on Argentine TV upon apoligising for saying that all Argentine politicians are a “band of thugs”.
