The head of Argentina’s organized labour confederation, CGT, Hugo Moyano, asked the Government of President Cristina Fernandez to say whether they are going to accept their demands included in the collective bargaining talks or not, after warning that he “fears nobody” and that he only “bends before God.” Read full article

Mar 01st, 2012 - 06:09 am - Link - Report abuse 0Moyano is not afraid, he only bends before God., would be an acceptable statement in most countries. But surely in Argentina it should be: is not afraid, he only bends before Hitler, Peron or Nestor.
Mar 01st, 2012 - 11:03 am - Link - Report abuse 0This is a sad and possibly dangerous situation. On the one hand the continuing pressure from below of the workers is essential to make sure the only pressure on the government is not that of the elite; otherwise it would be difficult for even the best government to govern progressively. However this guy Moyano strikes me as a complete opportunist, who seems set on wrecking Cristina's progressive leadership to further his own ambitions. He has boasted about being an Argentine Lula in the past, ie going from labour leader to President, yet ironically the real Lula said he wished he was Argentine so he could vote for Cristina. I think his comments against re-election give the game away, he feels threatened by Cristina's popularity and stature which he can't match, so he's going to exploit any opening to try and bring her down, even if it helps the anti-labour forces of the right. But then he himself was in the 70s a protege of the far right peronist warlock Lopez Vega, and Isabel Peron who the Kirchners tried to get Spain to extradite for her human rights abuses, at a time when nestor and Cristina were part of the left youth movement that was being purged and attacked, so maybe he's just showing his true colours again

@4 I agree it is all about him and his ego. I doubt he genuinely cares about his union members, just the power he wields. Puts me in mind of the union leaders in the UK around the 70's and 80's. It did not end well for them.
Mar 01st, 2012 - 12:26 pm - Link - Report abuse 0@6 I think you mean the union leaders right now in the UK.
Mar 01st, 2012 - 12:28 pm - Link - Report abuse 0@7 They don't have the same power now; not in reality. Remember wildcat strikes and secondary picketing? That happens still in Argentina.
Mar 01st, 2012 - 12:51 pm - Link - Report abuse 0You can only use a mob for as long as they think you have the power. When they realize they have the power. Watch out!
Mar 01st, 2012 - 12:59 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Everything in Argentina is turning really ugly really fast.
@9 Yes, but it's a lot of fun to watch.
Mar 01st, 2012 - 01:18 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Moyano also blasted the government for retaining the unions’ health funds.

Moyano is CFK's Frakenstein. She only has herself to blame.

Mar 01st, 2012 - 02:52 pm - Link - Report abuse 0She should get nothing. Do a general strike and still nothing. Do another and nothing. Syndicalists will get tired and get him out of office. And that would be for the best.
Mar 01st, 2012 - 03:54 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Or the government should build a good railroad system. The one proposed by opposition. And you kill 80% of camioneros power.
Hugo Moyano will find himself in trouble. Everyone must bow down before Cristina and her Reich. I wonder if she actually has a square little moustache, that grows, and she has to have it waxed regularly to stop her true colours showing. I bet she tries hard not to call Stanley 'Warsaw' too! If CFK had her way her critics and opponents would end up dead!
