Uruguayan president Jose Mujica promised on Monday to ‘fight to the death’ for the future of Mercosur in spite of the fact that the group’s junior members Uruguay and Paraguay are suffering the most as Argentina and Brazil implement growing hurdles to trade. Read full article

    Damn, I thought he meant “fight to the death” literally, as in a Mujica V Turkeyneck UFC cage brawl. You just know the mad old bat would fight dirty though.

    If he were shoved into an arena armed with a sword and sheild he'd soon decide Mercosur wasn't worth fighting to the death for after all.

    “fight to the death”
    Idiom
    a) to engage in a battle that isn't finished until one opponent is dead.
    b) to turn around and offer up your arse to your neighbour in order to be routinely sodomised, and love every minute of it.

    I guess Mujica is going with definition two.

    Mercosur is dead. That's what he is saying. When it comes to money the South Americans inevitably show their colours.

    This is how Cristina Kirchner the most corrupt president in all of South America and her cronies get into power:

    Hmmm, I wonder where Fido Dido is? His comments are always amusing. I guess he'll begin today by telling us how South America is a superpower!

    To all my Brit friends.

    It is very easy to condemn Pepe for failing to cut the head off the Mad Bitch and for standing up to Brasil's trade rules (in response to the Mad Bitch), BUT I will ask you all just one question:

    WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

    Considerations - 4.5M pop in Uruguay;
    NO unique products of any sort that are rabidly in demand world-wide.

    I look forward to your positive answers (no Conqueroresque ones please).

    Diving Excursions to the Graf Spee are all that spring to mind - but I don't suppose that could fund a nation.

    Just continue to do what your nation has experience in and aim to do it better than others in the region. Go for quality rather than quantity to attract premium prices.

    Sounds like Mercosur is not producing the level playing field that was to be expected. Its value in this aspect must be diminishing whereas its strength as as stick for use only by the big boys Argentina and Brazil must be increasing. Mercosur needs to evaluate its roll and reflect the wishes of all its members.

    @9 I would redefine what my country did. So that it fulfills some kind of purpose. You cannot be such a small country and claim to do everything. Just look at Singapore, they only try to do a few things well.

    9. Solely align with Brazil and give up on anything to do with Argentina. What Uruguay should have done when Arg blocked the bridge over the Botnia plant was to nationalize all Arg bank accounts and property as compensation for their lost trade. That would have destroyed the Ks years ago but it's too late now. Uruguay has more power than it thinks it does. It is also a USA favorite and has our strong backing. they should use it to their advantage.

    @9 I'm going to agree with you on that front. There is no way that such a toxic relationship with Argentina is going to be able to assist in sizeable growth. Regardless of their missed opportunity last time, there will clearly be other opportunities to seek compensation for Argentinian behaviour. You just need someone with the Kahunas to do so.

    Therein lies the problem.

    When you want to discuss on Nazis first you should declare your own ethnic identity without fearing.

    @17 Nazism is a political ideology based around socialism, expansionism and agreessive nationalism. Hence it is a shortened version of national socialism.

    What's that got to do with ethnicity? furktard.

    Sources for what? That the UK and US have amongst their population Bastards and Execrables like the Nazis. What more proof than the infallible media of those countries AND government documents AND independent investigators AND international rights groups AND just common sense?

    The Soviet Union would have landed first on the moon if it wasn't for the good ol USA getting into bed with the Nazis. It should have been Swastika and not the stars and stripes there, would have only been fair.

    @22 well if you hadn't have got into bed with the Nazis, which you did, then you'd still be in a terrible hell hole driven by corruption and the mafia.

    So tobias, you're in Le Camping, so tell us... where did the $2.1 Billion go that Maximo's Hitler Youth were given to renew your airline fleet go?

    Did it go on electoral fraud, like everyone is suggesting? or did it go into a numbered swiss bank account? or just down the sofa?

    Greek, I'm not here to answer for the Ks or for the past. The nazi issue, AGAIN, was brought up by a Brit, the cestrian, in a topic about Mercosur and trade.

    I'm just responding tit-for-tat, as I'm left with no other option. I'm not insulting anyone, I'm just posting links, if they are inconvenient or make some feel ackward that is not my problem. Maybe some just need to face history instead of romantic notions of chivalric nationalism.

    @24 I'm not upset. My grandparents fought to keep Europe free of nazism. You are always going to find some of them still hanging about after it's all over. It's like Galtieri except the German people admitted it was their fault. Argentinians however, blame everything on a few people so they don't have to admit they did something wrong.

    They still don't admit they caused the war in 1982 and get horribly upset that someone even thought about sinking their ship.

    You read la Nacion and it calls argentina sponsored international terrorists, the Condors, 'Protagonists'... the positivity of terror in their eyes.

    You don't need to post links about nazis and criminals in the UK, we're perfectly capable of introspection here. We all know and admit what's furked up, unlike in Argentina where you can lose $2.1 Billion and no one bats an eyelid.

    Well, I agree with you on one thing, I find the people complaining about the Belgrano morons. If you are in a war, you are in a war and all targets are fair game.

    BTW, I don't see the British people taking blame for the 500,ooo dead in Iraq since the country was “preemtively invaded” (think about that concept, preemtive invasion, for a moment), to dispose of weapons that not only never existed, but a war justified with outright confabulated documents and dossiers.

    2.1 billion?

    http://edition.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/meast/01/30/iraq.audit/

    And that is chump changed compared to numbers being tossed about regarding the Bush presidency bank bailout. Some say hundreds of billions are unnacounted for.

    Idlehands I agree that quality is the ONLY way to go for a small country.

    GreekYoghurt Yes, we cannot be all things to everyone. On your second response, do your really, really, think that ANY agreement with compensation from Argentina is EVER going to be honoured - what about the Paris Club?

    yankeeboy Yes, I agree that we need to stop trading with Argentina. The missed opportunity about the banks was also astute. A very good point about the relationship with the USA however.

    MANY THANKS TO THOSE WHO RESPONDED

    That'll be good. Who or what's death is he referring to? Mujica = 77. Death and worms in 3 years.

    Argieland - Implosion in less than 5 years. Explosion if it thinks it can beat/cow Britain.

    @9 Try this. Uruguay is recognised as being the most economically-advanced countries in South America. It has a high Human Development Index. It has low levels of corruption. If it didn't have a peasant president it could go far. Request British support. Be free!
    @17 But you haven't, wog!
    @20 A thought. Have you tried intelligence? Rationality? A brain?
    @22 At least the UK and Us have better populations. Argies, all argies, are necrophiliac, genocidal, homosexual animals, thieves and murderers.
    @24 Brain-dead necrophiliac, arse-licking, sh*tter. Suck it up!
    @26 Strange! I don't see Iraqi casualties getting as far as 29,000. Is there a propaganda difference? Ever thought we'd be better if you were dead?
