This article is a bit all over the place, both for Mercopress and regular contributors here who push forth a certain narrative. Relations souring but the effect the US has on Argentina with this is effectively 0%.

Further, how can the US claim the Argentine peso has strongly appreciated when everyone here insists it is weak? Of course, our resident “economists” seem to not understand that while the nominal face value of the ARS is 4.30/4.50, the real value is much higher than 3 years ago because of internal inflation.

If you are an American and came in 2009 and got 400 pesos for your 100 dollars, you could buy 5-6 nice dinners. If you came today and got 450 pesos, you can only get 3. So while the face value exchange seems similar, the real costs are not. Argentina has reflated in value from within, not through the currency value.

The only thing consistent in all this is the complete amateurism and nauseating diplomacy of the Kirchner government, on that we can all agree.

But how can this be!? argentina must have sent their best man to sweettalk obama....

oh wait, its the guy who whined about the Falkland Islanders being supporessed hostages who “longed to be argentine” before publically screaming they were liars when they disagreed

“.....until Argentina manages a trade balance with all those countries with which is has significant deficits”.

the UK and the Yanks have talked. The only thing that keeps the RG's solvent cough cough is by having trade balances in their favour. Effectively the US will bring the RG regime down if it is forced to have a neutral trade balance.

This is what you get RG Land when you mess with the UK. You will be brought to your knees economically now - chuckle, chuckle....

So, Argentina is prepared to abide the legal rulings but wants the companies to accept less than they are owed. And temptation consistent with a deal similar to that for the defaulted sovereign bonds is no temptation at all. Doubly slighted, its no wonder the US is prepared to be openly neutral but privately partial on the Falkland Islands.

Yes, they want to wipe 70% off the figure. I hope the US tells them to shove it and pay the whole whack. The RG's wont dare take on the US and will have to do as they say.

This should be fun...ho, ho, ho...

    Also

“US companies in Argentina are divided: those working for decades know the market and more important the rules and risks of the game; but the new ones are complicated with imports controls, restrictions on funds’ transfers be it for royalties or dividends and the cancelling of credit lines for exports with foreign banks”.

Everyone now knows what the craic is with RG Land. do you take the risk and invest, knowing that whatever you have could be stolen from you on a whim, or do you simply say “no”. I'd be saying “no” and investing elsewhere.

@8 Maybe I'm wrong but their suggestion was to pay them in Argentine bonds and a 70% reduction.

So... they default on Argentine Bonds and they then want to pay you in Argentine Bonds but pay 70% less. Hmm... makes you wonder where argtards learned to negotiate.

Couple things are going to happen, payments from WB, IDB etc will be slowed or stopped. These are vital U$ needed by Arg. and if that doesn't do the trick they will be removed from IMF, IDB, WB, G20. CFK better come in line or Arg will be like Zimbabwe in 3 yrs.
Toby, The arg peso is strictly controlled, if it floated as it should it would be well over 5 and probably between 6-7 by now. It's $5.11 in the leak value as of yesterday. It looks like there is going to be a huge devaluation coming. If they take it to 10 it MAY keep the economy going until the next harvest but maybe not who knows at this point.

What a load of illogical bollocks that is tobias. According to your logic, the increased value of th peso in the last 3 years has resulted in the cost of food, increasing by 50%. Sorry but if you went by increased value in currency the you would beable to buy more than 6 meals today, and not 3. Yes the value of the peso has increased in the last few year until recently when CFK put measures in place to devalue it, no one here has said that it was not increasing in value the last few years only that in recent months your government has been devaluing it. Inflation is what has lead to you only being able to buy 3 meals today instead of 6 like you could 3 years ago for 400 pesos (as per your example amount). Your inflation is out of control, it has doubled in 3 years going by your example, which in turn knocks the value of the peso down as well, as despite the value rising in the peso in recent years, it has been devalued by 50% in 3 years. Therefore effectively worth half what it was worth 3 years ago (despite the value on the exchange), meaning prices have doubled as a result. Serious leanr economics before posting crap. Inflation does not lower the Exchange rate, it lowers the value of a currency purchasing power. For example, say 1 peso was worth 1 GBP, the peso had an inflation rate of 25% and the GBP had an inflation rate of 5%. The price of goods purchased in peso will be 20% higher for the same goods purchased using GBP, despite the exchange value being the same. Thats how your currency has devalued, and by devaluing it further like CFK has with import restrictions, the inflation rate will grow futher, making items even more expensive.

@16 I think it's all academic as no one is going to Argentina in order to buy meals, and no one in Argentina is allowed to leave because they cannot get holiday money out of ATMs.

@17 agreed, but i get the impression tobias was trying to defend what is indefensible using very poor logic, as all his example did was confirm that inflation is rife in argentina and resulted in the cost of meals increasing by 50% in the last 3 years. Though given the increase in inflation in the last 3 years, that is not surpirsing lol

Of course not, because it is the poor who live segregated in their part of town, between the railtracks and the expressway overpass. The police won't go in there but make sure the darkies don't get out an about, you wouldn't want a darkie walking about a non-black area, that's dangerous.

I love to see argies pretending they live up to anything they sign. They come on here pretending to be full of honour and integrity, and then they immediately renege on something or other.

Is this why Tobias refuses to admit any fault on the part of Argentina. He simply just performs some weird not-logical ad hominem attack on anyone who says anything about how they are basically a third world state full of people with a third world mentality. Woe betide anyone who dares point out that they illegally invaded the Falklands in 1982 because that's apparently categorically false and the Peace Ship Belgrano was going around sending children rainbows when it was sunk.

Argentinians are precisely the reason I wear a seatbelt in a car and a helmet when on a bicycle.

@32 Tobias never lost an argument, because he never had an argument. Everything you said was backed up with fact, everything he said was just opinions about the USA, not in anyway based on the point you made.

@38 Losing what exactly? You don't ever follow any point, just resorting to ad hominem attacks rather than say anything with an ounce of validity. So what's there to lose?

“Anglo countries have been ultra racist” so what you're doing there is being racist about racism. You specifically negatively judged a whole race through your opinion of a stereotyped behaviour. Well done Mr Hypocrisy. You didn't even give any concrete examples, like how the British helped to eradicate the slave trade in most nations, including the middle east and asia.

You're just really upset because 'Anglos' as you call them are very good at making money and making societies that even 'god's chosen people' the Jews are envious about. Whereas you folks cannot even make a place anyone wants to live, and bully each other into intense rudeness.

You must be part French, because you smell like roquefort and put up the white flag faster than Argentina did for some stupid islands. I'm insulting you all over and all you can say is that?? Makes me contemn you more.

@26 A good starting point. Please list all the agreements that the USA has not upheld. Then list all the ones it has. In other words, prove your statement.
@28 Seen lots of Americans travelling with the “Stars and Stripes” on their baggage. Don't see many argies doing the same. Ashamed? Understand that no-one would recognise the dishrag?
    @31 “I won't have children”. In other words, you're a faggot, a lesbian or a transexual.
@38 “The truth?” How would you go about recognising the truth? From your government-dictated “education”? From your government-controlled media? How much “stuff” from the rest of the world do you reject because it doesn't fit your preconceptions?
@40 Would you like to trace the origins of slavery? Asians. Then Mediterranean countries. Africa was into it from the start.
@48 Start from the beginning. It's not an insult if it's the truth. Let's see. Argie “troops” use people's homes, beds, furniture as places to defecate. That's truth. Argies invade a peaceful country. That's truth. Argieland accepted loads of nazi war criminals and let them live free. That's truth. Argie “methods” are similar to nazi methods. No ovens. The River Plate from 10,000 feet. Nothing to shovel up afterwards. And let's face it, argie railways aren't safe.
@ 50 “Europe sucks”. So does a black hole. And argieland is a bit of “debris”.
@53 “Worthy of friendship” from you? Is anybody looking for friendship from an imbecile, insane leper? I think not!
@57 Please don't worry. Argieland will be purged.
@59 Do you understand that you are already dead? You are just waiting to be disposed of. Keep cool. We will dispose of you. Meat grinder. Starting at the feet. Wouldn't want you to miss anything. And what a good source for nuclear fuel. No residue.
@61 Just remember that sh*te floats!

    @72 briton,
My Grandad was Ground crew in the RAF.
He missed the Battle of Britain.
Served in lndia, Mesopotamia & North Africa.
He was in the seige of Tobruk with the Aussies.
    Loved his stories,
The best one, during a German air raid, a bomb dropped right down into the bomb shelter & didn't go off.
When they defused it, it was full of sawdust & had been manufactured/sabotaged in Czechoslovakia.
l owe my life to the Czechs.

very interesting, mine was in the ack ack and was at liverpool dockes during raids, did not go overseas, but the world owes a great deal to the people who gave their lives for freedom and democracy,

a shame that we have fools like CFK today that wants to destroy the very thing, that makes the world a safer place to live,[democracy and freedom]
and the UN sits back and sleeps .

73 lsolde (#) I am delighted you have RAF in your background!!! I did my CCF in the RAF and then became a pilot in my own right when I returned to this country. I was then drafted for military service here and as I was a pilot I was sent to Officer Training School. The air force and navy are the decent guys here. I am vice chairman of the Buenos Aires Branch of the Royal British Legion which we are having to close down due to stupid beaurocracy in London. Aviation is a brotherhood and we all feel very close regardless of where we live.

    @75 Tim,
Actually we were always a Navy family.
Grandad, for his own reasons, broke the mould.
Loved his stories. They should have been written down & now they're lost as he died 5 years ago.
When l was going to school in Australia l had a best friend as you do.
His Grandad was in the RAAF based in Lincolnshire throughout the whole war. Don't know the squadron but it was Lancasters.
Have to admit that l have had the controls of a Beechcraft Baron in my nervous little hands.!
l was sitting next to the pilot & he let me fly her for 20 minutes or so!
    Completely illegal of course!
ls life difficult for you, where you are?
lt would be a balancing act, wouldn't it?
A pity that its come to this. l believe that we were good friends once.
We could be again, if the RGs would back off & drop their ridiculous “claims”.
The road that they are taking leads no-where.
    Regards

Isolde, this link on the Kasciuszko 303 Squadron is specially for you. I am married to a Pole and yesterday our 5th grandchild arrived. My in-laws were both with the RAF in the war and my mother-in-law, at 93, still keeps on working and won't give up. The RAF base in Linconshire was where the Dam Busters left from, I flew a Vulcan simulator there. The Latino RGs are different from the rest of us, a different culture and ethnical origin and there are some issues we don't see eye to eye on such as the Falklands. Enjoy the link:

Yes,Tim,l knew about the Poles & Czechs.
    We are forever grateful.
Actually l have an admiration for the both their nations.
The Poles because they have a long glorius history & the poor blighters are located between the Germans & the Russians.
Not an enviable position. l say this & l am part Russian.
The Poles also delayed the Mongol advance into Europe.
Long enough for Mongol politics at home to halt them, then cause them to return to Mongolia.
We could have seen the Mongols on the Channel coast, gathering ships if it had not been for the Poles.
As for the Czechs, the only democracy in Eastern Europe in the 1930's & we British betrayed them in 1938.
l feel guilty about this & l wasn't even born then!
And to compound this, these Gentlemen, at great risk to themselves, came to the UK & fought & died for us. This makes one humble, indeed.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Love the sound of the Spitfire's Merlin.
Grandad said it was a 27 litre v-12 of over 1000 horsepower.
What l wouldn't give to fly one of those!
G'dad was an engine & airframe fitter & rebuilt damaged aircraft.
As you can see, l was very close to my G'dad.

78 lsolde (#) The RR Merlin eventually reached 2,600 HP in the Series 130. I was at Duxford a few years back watching the Spits fly and the sound had the hairs on my arms standing on end. The US built the Merlin engine as a Packard and it was used in the Lightening and Mustang.

As for the Mongols, they did reach Poland but how far in I don't know, as my wife is descended from Ghengis Khan's grandson. She also as a good dose of Russian. A proper Tartar in all senses!!!
