'Argentina was prepared for ( a ) war ( of aggression ) with Chile.'

' regarding Chile the former general said that they openly collaborated with the UK, “they did not behave as brothers, they behaved as swine”.”

What is wrong with these RGs? All totally fucked in the head.....

The problem for the Argentine governments is that outside of their brainwashed devotees, people refuse to read and play by their script. So, Chile would not stand by them whilst they invaded the Falkland Islands and then lay down to be invaded. See, they didn't get the script.

Menendez is a liar. There was no shortage of Argentine rations in the Falklands in 1982. The officers allowed themselves plenty to eat but let the conscripts starve. There was so much food left behind that Falkland Islanders lived on it for about two years.

@6 I would like to back up what honoria has written. After the surrender I witnessed the sheds full of Argentine food here in Stanley. I guess the problem was that either they couldn't or wouldn't pass it up to the guys on the ground hence they were (in cases I witnessed) forced to hunt the few sheep that were left like a pack of dogs and after the sheep were gone they turned their attention to the flightless steamer ducks which would be a pretty awful sort of thing to try and eat but I guess it was either that - or starve.

Besides being fool, crazy or whatever that decrepit old is very shameless. Asking for help after all the bullying that made on Chile. So his defeat is nothing more than what he was looking for.

This man has no shame. He blasts Chile, who were enemies of Argentina in 1982, for using any and all means to defend themselves, including allying itself with Britain.

He allows his men to starve. He then shamelessly says that Galteri ordered the invasion because he didn't want to be president anymore! Absolute lunacy!

What he really means is that he thought that Britain would just roll over and let them get away with their illegal invasion. As the task force approached, the military junta believed that it was just a bluff, that they wouldn't really attack, because the odds of travelling 14,000 miles, fighting an entrenched enemy, with no land base to work from was impossible - wasn't it?

Only the brave men and women of the British Armed Forces proved that nothing is impossible if you try hard enough and believe.

The only sensible thing Menendez did was to surrender and not sacrifice those poor boys, conscripts all, who'd been lied to and left to rot.

And what happened to these poor boys upon their return to Argentina? They were spat at by their own people for NOT fighting to the death! Shame on Argentina.

So Argentina was actively prepared for war against Chile, had a history of aggression against Chile and was quite happy to stab that neighbour in the back .. but Menendez whines bitterly that Chile looked after their own interests, rather than Argentina's and his career? This for the gutless yellow-bellied coward who to this day has never admitted his own part in the 'dirty war' .. and has on occasions even gone so far as to deny it ever took place.

Some people really aren't fit to breathe the same air as their countrymen.

How can Honoria be a squatter when she can trace her ancestors back for generations. She is descended from colonistists who have continuously lived on the Falklands since at least 1830.

Tell me Think, how far back in South America can you trace your ancestors? About 50yrs, did they leave Germany rather hurriedly in 1945? Because unless you are from one of the Native South American tribes YOU are either a Spanish or German squatter.

And if you are descended from native South Americans, perhaps you should be demanding the return of your land from the colonialist Argentinians.

However back on topic. Your government has always been aggressive to its neighbours, be they Uraguay, Paraguay, Chile or the Falklands. Your are not good neighbours, you are bullies who believe its your God given right to own everything, fortunately you don't have the might to back up these delusions, and all you can do is fall back on constant whining to the international community, who are getting SICK and TIRED of it.

After also working your way through Italian, Basque, Welsh, Polish, Croatian, Russian, Arab, Danish, Finnish,Belgian and Norwegian .. you may want to modify that guess to first generation Herdi Gerdi Swedish squatter. Not that they can match the 189 native tongues of London - not many places can - but they really are a remarkably cosmopolitan bunch down there in Argieland ;)

PS: I dunno if it is just my experience that is unusual, but contrary to what most people seem to assume, I have met massively more Argentinians of Italian ancestry than I ever have of Spanish.

Does it matter? More than 800 Argentinian pilots made a long and hazardous journey to wear the RAF uniform during World War II - and barely 300 lived to make it back to Argentina - and I think they deserve a little more respect. Whether they were of British decent, or not, is irrelevant; because they and their descendants are as Argentinian as anyone else of immigrant stock .. and they volunteered as Argentinians, so they clearly considered themselves to be more Argentinian than British.

Do you sit there sifting Aussie, Kiwi and South African volunteers to see if they were of British stock before deciding how to count them, or whether or not to trivialise their contribution to the war?

@22 From Wiki 'Around 600 Argentine volunteers, mostly of Anglo-Argentine descent, joined the British and Canadian Air Forces, many in the 164 Argentine-British RAF squadron,' There was a very good article in 'The Aeroplane' about 4 years ago that bore that out. ( Yes my anorak is hanging on the back of the kitchen door), I rest my case on that part of the discussion.

The good people of Argentina? Well my views are based primarily on my experiences in and around BA. Thieving is endemic... be it tax evasion, charging top dollar for crap workmanship, uniformed officials putting payments straight into there skyrockets, plain old fashioned thieving, they have inherited the very worst of southern Italian morality ( there was a discussion on another thread just the other day on this very subject).

Back on point. This interview with former General Menendez shows that the Argentine government was two faced in 1982 - threatening to invade Chile on one hand, then bemoaning the fact that they didn't support them on their invasion of the Falklands on the other.

In 2012 - nothing seems to have changed. The Argentine government is still two faced.

Quite aside form the fact that your comment shows you up as homophobic pond scum, do you really think that clip shows more than a minuscule percentage of Argentinians?

If you see a clip of film showing a million gays and lesbians marching through London on the first Sunday of June, do you also assume that clip of film to show that all seventy-off million Brits are homosexuals?

@31 Bit rich coming from a foreigner.

I was around in 1982 when the cowardly, underhand argies used four naval task forces and 66,000 troops to attack and invade a peaceful British Overseas Territory defended by 70 Royal Marines.

It is too easy for you foreigners to respond to perfectly reasonable observations of the national characteristics of a bunch of gangsters by simply issuing insults. I notice you don't attempt to prove any of those observations are incorrect. You just descend to the same level as argies. What are you? Some sort of liberal, PC, do-gooding tw@t that happens to live in the cesspit? Are you trying to suggest that the “people” shown in the film were not represenative? You'll need to go a long way.

Now, your comment was unnecessarily, personally offensive. Whilst mine was based on research. For instance, there are more practising psychiatrists in argieland than in any other country. Then note the number of argie POWs in 1982. Then note that argieland actively welcomes and encourages homosexuals of both sexes and probably those between.

A “miniscule percentage”? There are none so blind that do not want to see. Argieland persists in active warfare against the Falkland Islands supported by the bulk of its population as witness the re-election of the Black Widow. It may be economic or political warfare, but it is still warfare. and of a description in breach of the UN Charter.

I'm afraid you're just an apologist. And not a very good one. Do not insult me by ascribing your morals to me.

    @32 Conqueror

Unnecessarily, personally offensive? Really? You think that is unnecessarily offensive when you have been deliberately and outrageously offensive, racist and homophobic? (and have now repeated that racism and homophobia all over again)

And your comments that the “majority of argies are sick, bitter, twisted, f*cked up, cowardly, homosexual, psychotic tossers with delusions of unattainable grandeur” is based on “research” is it? Are you for real? I take it that is proper scientific research and that you will be submitting it for peer review.

By all means call individual Argentinians on hypocrisy that you witness and do feel free to attack the Argentinian leadership and political classes, along with the institutions of government and society; but making sweeping generalisations that stigmatise all, or the majority, of individual Argentinians is beneath contempt, makes you a racist and shows a crass ignorance of the subject.

As for using sexual orientation as a pejorative: whether you like it or not, that paints you as a premier league homophobe.

For the record, Argentina no more “encourages” homosexuality than the UK does. It just accepts people for the way they are and avoids criminalising and stigmatising people for the way their genes turn out – a trait of civilised society and the European Convention on Human Rights that you clearly haven't caught up with - and you would have to be pig-ignorant to believe anything else.

Oh look!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJveIvODpuo - and the video doesn't even show the thronged main body of Soho Square where the grass is. I guess all British men must be batty boys. They can deny it all they like, but the pictures speak for themselves, or do they?

If (and I stress the IF) you are in any way typical of what Britain is protecting in the Islands, then you may just single-handedly have persuaded me that the Argentinians are right and the opinions of the islanders are wholly irrelevant.

@44 - Skare, I do agree with your remarks here. Freedom of speech is just that, the freedom to say what you like even if it goes against the grain. I don't agree with conqueror in the slightest, but as long as he doesn't incite people to violence, he has the right to express his opinions, just like those Argentinians like Pirat-hunter have the right to express theirs.

The minute you start censoring people, by not allowing them to express the views, you lose freedom of speech, which is a fragile thing. Censoring people and their ideas just allow them to fester behind closed doors until they turn into something really nasty.

Allowing them to vent their views just shows that, yes they are bigoted, but also rather sad and pathetic.

    @32 - Conqueror.

Having just read your post I want to tell you what a complete and utter cock you are. You were around in 1982 were you? How old we're you 5?

Your disparaging remarks are an insult to all people's especially the British. We are all foreigners until we get to know each other.

I too 'was around' during the Falklands conflict, and I was angry that the Argentinians had invaded, but hate is not a word I would have used.

Having been a soldier, hate is something that can't be afforded. I had the honour of speaking to some veterans of the Falklands War. They didn't hate the Argentinians either. In fact, many of them felt sorry for the young Argentine conscripts, many of them had been told that the British didn't take prisoners and would torture them to death, by their officers to try to get them to fight to the death.

Most of these conscripts were boys, most not even into their 20's, but they did their duty as they saw it, as did the British forces. During the final days, many of them had been abandoned by their officers and Senior Non-Commissioned Officers, and left to fend for themselves. Petrified that they were going to be killed, they surrendered as the hunger, cold and sense of abandonment took hold.

They were amazed at just how well the British looked after them and their wounded comrades. These men were not cowards, and neither are the millions of people who live in Argentina.

What your comments do show is that you are an ignoramus of the highest order, and a pillock to boot. It doesn't take a foreigner to notice that, just common sense, and if you had any sense of honour you would apologise unreservedly to Skare and everyone on this site for your extremely offensive comments.

Out of interest, how do you feel about the fact that the UK is considered to be the most gay-friendly country in Europe, or that Manchester is the most gay-friendly city in the whole world? Does it disgust you as much as much as it does that Argentina, along with Canada, spearhead gay rights in the Americas .. or do you wish that the UK was more like Iran, where daring to fall in love with someone of the same sex can get you executed?

@40 They certainly do and whats more they enforce the rigidly. British law states that “Anything percieved to be racially motivated, is to be treated as such.” The magic word being percieved, all incidents perceived to be racially motivated, are treated and investigated as such. I'm not so certain about Homophobic motivations, It maybe the same, I can't remember. All Police Forces in the UK have dedicated “Hate Crime Units,” in one form or another.

@36 A really fool comment very close to the sayings of Menendez and his criminal fellows since there is an argentinian song that complains about war and its consequences treating as traitors those who involved the country in that. Please don´t forget that war is a serious issue and remember that chilean army has never SURRENDER as argentinian has done it, so and in that case the spoils of war can be all the argentinian oil wells in the south and I´m certain that many oil companies will be happy to assist chileans in the commitment.

@43 No he won't. And I've been here a lot longer than you. 261 British people were KILLED in 1982 because of the scabby argies. Every argie that existed then or now is culpable and I hate them all. I am prepared to make exceptions for the possible 0.0001% of the population of the cesspit that doesn't believe in their “Malvinas” myth and doesn't habitually cheat, commit violence, lie and/or steal. But they have to make themselves known. Silent opposition to government gangsterism isn't opposition. It's tacit approval. “It wasn't us.” they whinge. Yes it was! The entire population of argieland is culpable for the 1982 invasion and war. They are culpable even if they weren't born, or should I say extruded, unless they refuse to subscribe to the attitudes and motives that brought about those events. In argieland, there are 40+ million war criminals. The war criminals are alive and well. Led by the Black Widow.

Questions for argies and argie lovers:

    1. Do you believe the Falkland Islands belong to argieland? War criminal.
    2. Do you accept that Britain had been on the Falklands since 1690, claimed sovereignty in 1765 and never relinquished it? No? War criminal.
    3. Do you accept that the appointment of Luis Vernet as “Governor” of the Falkland Islands by the Province of Buenos Aires was illegal? No? War criminal.
    4. Do you think any number of UN General Assembly resolutions gives argieland any sort of “rights”. Yes? War criminal.
    5. Do you think the UN Committee on Decolonisation has any relevance to the Falkland Islands? Yes? War criminal.
    6. Do you think argieland is legally or morally justified in imposing economic and political sanctions on 3,140 Falkland Islanders? Yes? War criminal.

Get the picture? Because of my age and infirmities, I had to sit and watch BRITISH servicemen being wounded and KILLED protecting BRITISH people from scumbags. As a result, the only “good” argie is a dead argie.

Don't use your fart-arse PC crap with me!

    @56 Well said.

Conqueror, just so you know that the British Armed forces don't have any barriers to people wanting to serve their country. Any religion (including witches and devil worshipers), any racial group (gasp, including non-white people) and any sexuality (excluding bestiality - although there are some Welsh regiments who have sheep and goats for mascots - which always made me wonder. LOL).

You see the Armed Forces are a reflection of society as a whole. Now gays were only allowed to serve openly in 2000, but everyone knew that gays were in the military long before this, and would definitely have been present during the liberation of the Falklands. Just because your homophobic doesn't mean the rest of us are.

So fancy joining the British Armed Forces and showing the world that you're as tough as you think you come across on the Internet? That you're courageous enough to pick up a weapon to fight, kill or even lay down your life for Queen and Country?

You do have to have certain characteristics to join up, however, you have to show a certain amount of intelligence, have honour and have courage. So are you up to the challenge?

@63 - Because of your age and infirmities you had to sit and watch British Soldiers being killed!

Really? How? In 1982 there was no satellite TV, no live broadcasts, and the government could restrict what was broadcast by the imbedded journalists. I know for a fact that the government wouldn't show casualties, or give out casualty figures during a war. No government in their right mind would as it's bad fir morale. So how could you have sat and watched that? Impossible unless you had a ring-side seat in the Falklands.

You are what we in the military call a Walt. It stands for Walter Mitty. It means you are a fake. At best you are a grief whore, someone who likes to jump on the bandwagon, and beat their chests in obviously fake grief. Pathetic.

By the way, prior to you becoming old and infirm, did you serve at all? There were plenty of conflicts going on around the world post WW2 and pre-Falklands that the British were involved in.

In fact, there was only one year in the whole 20th century that a British soldier wasn't killed on operations, and that was 1968. So there was plenty of scope for you to show how manly and brave you were; Korea, Aden, Burma, Egypt, Cyprus, Northern Ireland or even just manning checkpoint Charlie in West Berlin, guarding against the red hoarde.

So, what did you do during the (cold) War? It's easy to rant on about war, and try and glorify it, especially when its others that are going to do the fighting and the killing and dying.

@63 - your comment of “the only good Argie is a dead Argie,” shows that you are not only a pillock but a coward too.

Of course the Argentinians celebrated when they had successfully invaded the Falklands. They had been brainwashed to believe that they were liberating them, they lived under a military dictatorship, who censored all the news channels. It was only after the defeat of the Argentine forces that the public realised just how much they'd been lied too.

I was in RAF Germany at the time. We got most of the news from BBC radio and newspapers. I remember they withdrew all our 9mm ammo, we were armed with SMG' and Browning SLP', our heavy weapon being the LMG of which we had several. They issued us with replacement ammo which rumour had was meant for Pakistan, you could tell the difference, there was a purple ring around the prime of the cartridge. The stuff was crap, there were numerous stoppages on the range, bloody stuff would not clear the barrel of SMG'. Then about a third of the way through the war, the fencing around the range was removed, the RAF Regiment drove their Spartans on to a 25M range and were zeroing their Coaxial GPMG'. I remember thinking then, “fuck they are treating this seriously” recalling ammunition and putting other combat units on standby.
In retrospect it seems that Maggie would have been quite willing to pull units away from NATO commitments. I thank god it never happened, it would have meant that our losses would have been worse, they were bad enough as it was, but it had to be done then and it would have to be done again. These are our people, and why do you join up? if not to defend your own people?

@74 - I was a stroppy teenager at the time, still at school. I remember when the news of the invasion broke, my dad had me out in the back digging an air raid shelter. He thought the Falklands were off the coast of Scotland! Although to be fair on him, so did a lot of other people. Still made me carry on digging (good practice for digging shel-scrapes in later years), and our air raid shelter turned into a fish pond! To this day I still think the air raid shelter business was a smoke screen cause he'd always wanted a pond, but mum wouldn't let him in case one of us kids fell and drowned.

In my unit we used to say that war was God's way of teaching Americans geography. Maybe it was for the British too!

I'm glad to hear that Maggie would've pulled out all the stops if necessary, and I'm sure our friends in the Falklands are heartened by that too.

so the bottom line Argentina you had years more time than us to prepare for the Falklands war than our weeks, and you still lost, tough titties....except defeat, Dignity isnt a word much used in Argentina is it?

Our airforce alone has 46 F-16 highly maintained Fighting Falcon fighters.

Although all joking aside you're not far wrong. But I blame the education system of today. We used to learn geography by the teacher stamping the outline of the British Isles in your book in ink, and your home work was to label all the islands, and major cities. There were no computers, no Internet, we had to look things up in books, or ask for your dad's help. As you probably guessed, my dad's grasp on geography wasn't too good, so no help there for me.

On the other hand, back then I would have been hard pressed to label the countries of Europe correctly, except for France, and that's only because it's the closest country to mainland Britain.

Chile has a good military today. But so does Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela. Heck even Peru's military is much better than Argentina. In fact, some Argentine military analysts say Argentina would lose a war against Bolivia or Paraguay. Argentina spends less than 1% on military spending when the rest of South America spends at least 3% of GDP. I actually like it, I don't want my money to go to North American or European industry.

So you would clearly be able to annex a big portion of Patagonia. Just one problem: the population would not want to become Chilean.

So immediately, self-determination would come into play and so we would have the UK doing the job for us anyway. :)

@86 - reality check, you're right, Britain was trying to negotiate with Argentina over some sort of transfer of power at the time, but the Argentinians were being uncooperative - hmm so nothing new there then.

The invasion, whilst awful for the Islanders and sad because of the loss of life, had one good outcome. It made the British Government and people sit up and take notice, and be more than just absentee landlords. It paved the way for the current Falkland Island Government, the move towards the self-determination of the people, and the change in status to becoming a British Overseas Territory. It put the Falklands on the map for good. So awful as the war was, maybe it was Devine providence that it happened at all. It sure gave us apathetic British a good kick up the arse, and it was long overdue kick up the arse too.

    @63 Conqueror

By the way, I think you have a bloody nerve to question me. I am in two minds whether to share this, but in the light of your sick “argie lovers” jibe......

I volunteered, as a non-British national who was under no obligation to enter a war zone when the Atlantic Causeway (the Cunard ship I was serving on as a newly qualified 20-year-old navigation officer) was requisitioned by the British Ministry of Defence.

We took 28 helicopters and tens of thousands of tonnes of stores, fuel and equipment down to the Falklands. We arrived a couple of days after twelve of our friends and colleagues had been killed when our sister ship, the Atlantic Conveyor, was hit by two Exocet missiles.

We were there, right in the thick of it in San Carlos Water and full of highly volatile aviation fuel, for 57 days and handled over 4,500 individual aircraft movements (both helicopters and Harriers) and received the casualties from the Sir Galahad and Sir Tristram.

I wear the ribbon of the South Atlantic Medal on my uniform and have seen sights, smelt smells and felt and smelt the sort of fear that you can't even begin to imagine.

I don't know anyone who was involved down there who thinks the way you do and wishes entire people dead the way you do – on the contrary, most of the people I have met who went through that have the attitude that there must be a better way. But you know what, if you are truly sick enough in the head to think that my preference for parley makes me an “argie lover” and a “war criminal” then so be it, because it must be so easy to talk up war and violence when you can sit at home safe and sound in the knowledge that you will never have to go and get your own hands dirty and wake up with the nightmares for the rest of your life.

I think a lot of us feel that way. It's a shame that the people of the Argentine can not recognise that fact. Thirty years may seem like a long time to them, but it's not. The freedom of the Falkland Islanders came at the highest price of all. The lives of some of our finest young men. If they think we, the people of this country, would allow our government to negotiate that freedom away, well, it just shows how little they know of us as an island nation.

There was nothing to thank the British for. Easy answer.

The war was caused by the Junta falling apart. Again, the Brits have an interesting concept of cause and effect. Maybe that's why they are a country the believes preemptive war is really a defensive war, as Tony Blair eloquently conviced his people of.

Anyway, the opinions of British nationals over internal argentine affairs is thoroughly not of our interest within Argentina.

    @103 Frank

Oh, so you really wonder whether all Argentinians are like the extremist trolls who come here, like flies to shit, because they want to counter extremist trolls like Conqueror? :)

In short: NO! Do you not think that a significant proportion of the Argentinians who come here ask themselves the exact same questions about the Brits?

I spent three years lecturing at the Escuela Nacional de Náutica (which is the national nautical school of Argentina) in Buenos Aires and in all that time I met remarkably few people who even come close to being represented by the jingoistic trolls you see commenting here (or indeed by the Falklands policy pursued by the government). Don't get me wrong, they still think the islands are Argentinian by rights, but very few really have the desire for bad blood.

Believe it or not, most Argentinians are very reasonable and intelligent people with very much the same aspirations as anyone else. They really aren't the cold-blooded freaks that some like to imagine so that they can depersonalise the whole prospect of doing them grievous harm.

It is just a symptom of forums like this. You get one extremist bragging about how the boys gave it to the Argies, that upsets someone and they then start giving it the government line and so on and so on until in the end it is an orgy of bizarre extremist utterances, with everyone sounding as bizarre as everyone else .. and none of it helped by dark humour and subtleties of language etc. missing the mark on both sides.

As an outsider, I can promise you that most of the Brits here come across as being just as unhinged and bizarre as most of the Argentinians.

I must admit that I have problems reconciling the whole monarchy thing and accepting why the inbred crowned heads of England, Denmark and Norway are any different from Joe Bloggs on the street just because they are the heirs to some stupid old Danish Viking king called Gorm the Old who kicked the bucket in 958 .. and that is basically what it boils down to.

Why not follow the example of the Irish and have an elected ceremonial head of state who serves for seven years?

The thing about most Monarchys today is that they reign by the will of the people, and by the whole do a good job for their people, well they do here anyway. The thing about states who do not have monarchys, is that they have no comprehension just exactly what it is they are, okay I confess, I have that problem too. All that would be required to change that, would be an act of parliament. Hey presto, the UK is a republic. One problem though, the last time that happenedwe experienced a bloody civil war, father against son, brother against brother. All in all, I think it's better to keep our monarchy. I would deffinately look better as a cavalier!

@115 Skare, I have to disagree with you and agree with cornishair.

The Queen is a non partisan Head of State, unlike Presidents who are political animals and will often put their own political survival above the needs of the country. Since the Queen has nothing to lose or gain allows her the freedom to advise and pass on her wisdom gained over many years to whoever is in Government. In the event of a hung Parliament she can send the MPs back to the polls for another election. Should a Parliament become unable to continue she can dissolve it and insist on a new election.

She is a vital balance that stops one person from obtaining absolute power and becoming a dictator. She rules by the will of the people. I also believe that she is the longest serving Head of State in the world, and commands respect from many different people around the world. Her counsel is sort after, with the full security that what was discussed will never be leaked.

She reads every Government paper, and never shirks her duty. She is an ambassador for good will. I remember seeing a programme at the time of her Golden Jubilee. A Lady in Waiting of the Queens reminisced about the tour around the Empire (as it still was in those days), and a particular memory of South Africa surfaced. The Queen was on a slow moving train travelling across the country. At every crossing along the railway tracks, people had gathered for a chance to see her. So she stood by the open window and waved to them. Her Lady in Waiting asked her why she bothered, as the people would probably only get a fleeting glimpse of her, and it meant that the Queen had to stand up every few minutes. The Queen replied, “these people have travelled great distances to see me. The least I can do is stand at the door and wave back to them.”

Of course we did try getting rid of the Monarchy once, and we ended up with a dictator so bad that he made every previous King and Queen seem like saints in comparison.

Good post; I like it. You've summed up my view of the queen nicely there. Having met most of the senior members of the royal family in the past 20 years after previously being unsure about their role and sell by date, I am a total fan. The stability they give our countries is remarkable and I think they still have an ongoing place at least in the UK and many other countries. Certainly places such as Australia (mature and fully developed country which has a very different focus these days) will, in the future, cut the umbilical cord but not the UK or the Falklands.

God Save the queen (not that I believe in God but hey...)

@130 Skare everyone has the right to their own opinion, I just expressed mine on the Monarchy. The are even some people in Britain who wish to become a Republic, strange as they may seem to me. LOL Even Think who can't actually formulate any serious arguments about anything has the right to his own opinion, but he is harmless and sometimes amusing.

If you think about it this way, every Head of State is technically a Monarch, if only for a few years, we just call them Presidents.

But for me and many others in Britain a Constutional Monarchy works. I think we are still still suffering traumatic genetic memories from the last and only non-Monarch we had - Oliver Cromwell.

@151 Think, you have every right not to like the British Royal Family. However they are really nice, friendly people.

I work at a hospital in the UK where wounded soldier's are treated. On extremely rare occasions a politician turns up to 'visit' the wounded troops. You can't move due to the huge number of journalists there to record the 'caring' face of the politicians, as they use it for political leverage to get their faces othe TV, in news papers, and the like.

Prince Charles visits the wounded regularly. No press are told he's coming, because the visit isn't about him, it's about the wounded men and women. He meets them and the medical and nursing staff who look after them. He brings the wounded biscuits and chocolates - wait for it, cornishair don't hold your breath - from the Duchy of Cornwall.

I had the honour and privilege of meeting him, and a nicer bloke I've never met. The one thing that I will say is that he's a lot shorter in real life than he appears on the TV. After meeting him I wondered if short people were put around him to make him look taller, or maybe it's just the camera angles.

Well now you see, having rather large peripheral appendages myself, I can rather empathise with my future king. Several years ago I had to have a Melanoma removed from below my LEFT eye. My rather beautiful surgeon, Scandanavian I believe (sorry I didn't get his name,) explained to me how they would remove skin from behind my RIGHT ear, to repair the hole the operation would leave. No matter how much I begged, I could not persuade (her realy,) to remove an equal amount of skin from behind my RIGHT ear. Gods honest truth. So now in a high wind, I walk with a starboard tilt and have a hell of a job convincing the neighbours I'm not drunk. It's true, I swear it.

Hello LEPRecon. Just about to leave you a post. The ears, true, the operation, true, sadly, depending what day and what time you see me, that could also be true.
Small world, I also work in an hospital. I do not know where yours is, but thanks for all the good care you give to the lads.
A couple of months ago, a young wounded marine came to our hospital to visit his nan. She had just had a hip relacement. He was in a wheelchair, having lost a leg, just above the knee, to an IED, six weeks before. Damn he was good, every inch a marine.
your right about Charles, I first saw him in 75, when he came to my passing out parade. I had only seen him on TV before that and was struck by how short he was. He was being escorted by some of the girls. I suppose even then they were concious of his height.
The drill sergeant told us, that he would drop his pace stick, when he saw the prince, to signal the band to play, God save the Prince of Wales. The prince would then come out of a flight of stairs and inspect the parade.
Anyway, the prince must have been briefed on this. As soon as he saw the pace stick drop, he stopped on the stairs, stepping out when the band stopped. Man I can still see the drill sergeant now, waving that pace stick about like a mad man, trying to get the band to stop playing. I don't think he ever got over it.
Keeep up the good work, look forward to reading more of your well constructed posts.

I don't think there can be a Brit who hasn't heard of Simon Weston; who received horribly disfiguring when the Sir Galahad was attacked in Bluff Cove and has since become the most recognisable of Falklands veterans. If you really want to understand how most people who were there feel about the Argentinians on the other side, then take a moment to read what Simon says about the pilot who was responsible for the attack in which he was injured, and many of his friend and comrades were killed:

In October last year, Simon joined Argentine President Carlos Menem and other dignitaries at St Paul's Cathedral in a service of reconciliation. Following his initial meeting in Argentina with pilot Carlos Cachon, Carlos and his wife, Graciela, have visited Simon's home and met the Weston family.

“I have no bitterness towards him because what he did wasn't personal,” says Simon. “It was an instant thing. This is a war fought honourably. It was a man doing his job, wearing a uniform.

” There's a huge difference because there are no dirty tricks going on here - it's an honourable battle. The fight is the fight. But I'd been holding myself to ransom for so long I needed to meet him and he played a great role in helping me. He's a lovely guy.”

I remeber the documentary they made for TV about him, shortly after the war. There were scenes of doctors removing dressings from his burns. I remember that despite the medication, he was in agony! his burns were horrendous. I'm not suprised he holds no grudges, he's that type of person. It makes me wonder though, whether I would have the strength of character to do the same.

“I'll leave you to say that to the pilots who, with an 'ARGENTINA' tab on the shoulder of their RAF uniforms, stood tall alongside Czechs, Poles, Frenchmen and Norwegians and helped to save Britain's bacon at the Battle of Britain”.

In the words of Winston Churchill: “Never in the field of human conflict has so much been owed by so many to so few”.

Absolutely and Norway, where I think you claim to come from, has been a close ally and trusted friend of Britain for many years. Gratitude for British assistance in liberating their Country from the Nazis has extended to the present day.

    Four points
    1) The Argentine pilots who volunteered to fight for Britain were of overwhelmingly British descent.
    2) The Argentine pilots were assigned to Bomber Command and Coastal Command and did not feature as fighter pilots in what is known as the Battle of Britain
    3) Of the 2927 Battle of Britain Pilots 2353 were British. The next largest contingents were Poles (145) and New Zealanders (135).
    4) After the war many of these British descended Argentine pilots decided not to live back in Argentina because of the lack of respect and outright hostility shown to them by the Argentinian Government, who were sympathetic to the Nazi Germany.

As for Simon Weston, here we have a Brit who suffered terrible injuries and still feels passionately that the Falkland Islands and Falkland Islanders were well worth fighting for. I recently watched an interview where Simon completely demolished a so called Argentine academic trying to justify Argentine sovereignty.

1)They weren't all assigned to coastal command

    2) Whether they were specifically in the battle of Britain (and I strongly dispute none were) is as irrelevant as what their descent is .. if they were pilots in the RAF at that time, then they were freeing up other pilots who were in the battle. Same difference.

Its another fact that during the 2nd WW the Italians (unlike their Nazi German allies) constantly surrendered to the British 8th Army even when they had massive numerical superiority.

Perhaps its in the Italian/Argentine genes to enjoy life, appreciate art, eat, drink, fuck and be happy. War might be something they despise and something they are not very good at......And who could possibly blame them for that.

@179 - It was once commented that during the Falklands War that the Argentians often fought in a similar way to the Italians in WW2.

The Italians often put up a terrific fight sometimes lasting days and then weeks, and then would just surrender. Many of the Argentine troops in the Falklands fought the same way, initially fiercely, then they just stopped.

Is this because of some genetic anomaly in their makeup? Nope! It all comes down to one thing - morale.

One of the underpinning tenants of warfare regards the morale of the troops, which is why propaganda is so important. This is why a larger and well equiped force can sometimes be defeated by a smaller force.

Morale - don't underestimate it. Many of the Italians in WW2 had low morale because they believed (quite rightly in some cases) that they had been abandoned, not only by their government, but by their own military hierarchy.

During the Falklands war, the Argintine troops had similar feeling. Once morale collapses, it is extremely difficult to build back up.

Besides, it was you who turned a light-hearted and non-stigmatising comment to LEPRecon into into a justification for blaming Italian genes for a (rather dubious) claim about an “Argentinian tendency to surrender or run away”

    3) So are you now claiming that you didn't very deliberately use ethnicity / decent in order to distinguish between different types of Argentinians?

As for the rest: Whatever .. I'm as bored with Anglo racists as I am Argentinian racists and neither is any better than the other.

@179 Oh and just to show you that the collapse of morale isn't a parculiarly Italian/Latin phenomenon how about these.

France 1940 - the French Army outnumbered the Germany Army. The French had some of the best soldiers in the world at the time. A French General made tactical error by assuming the the Ardenne was impassable, so he placed his worst, least experienced troops there.

A small force of Germans broke through, causing panic amongst the inexperienced French troops. This panic spread throughout the troops and up the chain of command.

Convinced that the Germans would make for Paris, the General pulled back his best troops to defend the city. This made the breach worse, and French morale began to collapse. The 'Sickle Cut' manoeuvre, as Hitler called it, was designed to trap the British Expeditionary Force, and some of the best French Troops (who had assumed that the Germans would attack through Belgium). The British Command managed to keep the morale of their troops up, who fought a rear guard action that allowed the evacuation of Dunkirk to happen. But it was a disasterous defeat for the allies.

In 1942 Singapoure. The British suffered a massive and humiliating defeat at the hands of a smaller Japanese force, because morale of the troops and the chain of command collapsed. Some 20,000 troops had landed in Singapoure just days before to reinforce the garrison already there, and surrendered without a shot being fired.

So no, it is not a genetic trait at all. It is a Human trait.

When morale is kept up, surprising things can happen. Think of Rorke's Drift, when approx 100 British troops held out for days against 4000 Zulu warriors, until reinforcements arrive to relieve them.

@192 - You could try reading some history books instead of getting all your information from Wikipeadia. There was also an excellent televsion documentary about WW2 in the 70's called 'The World at War'. It's got about 22 hour long episodes, and each episode concentrates on a different aspect of the war, and interview soldiers who fought on both sides.

When the Allies invaded Italy, the Italians initally put up stiff resistance against them, and then when the Mussoline government fell, many of the Italians (who thought that they'd been fighting on the wrong side in the first place), switched and fought their former allies the Germans. They did so with gusto, and knowing that the Germans considered them to be traitors and would of executed them instead of taking them prisoner. But he morale of the Italians at this point was high.

I have to agree with Skare that your generalisations about the Argentinians and their genetic make up borders on racism. It is not a nice thing at all. Look at my post @187, which clearly shows that morale is a huge factor in any victory regardless of genetic makeup.

As for the Argentinians, they truly believed that they were liberating the Falklands and the people who lived there, so initally their morale was high, and they thought they were fighting for a true cause.

Bad leadership, from both the Military Junta, and their own officers plus British propaganda undermined their morale, making them unsure of themselves and their ability to fight. That is how you truly win wars, whilst minimising the loss of life on both sides.

Did you know that the Argentine forces on Mount William abandoned their positions rather than face the Gurkha's because they believed British propaganda about their stealth, cunning and ruthlessness in battle?

At the end of the Battle of Britain Film there is a list of how many pilots who fought in the Battle of Britain, and it lists their nationalities. I know for a fact that Argentina is on there, but can't say for sure how many of them there were.

    LEPREcon
There was also an excellent televsion documentary about WW2 in the 70's called 'The World at War'. It's got about 22 hour long episodes, and each episode concentrates on a different aspect of the war, and interview soldiers who fought on both sides.

Yeah, lots of good stuff on the telly and in films.

@216 - regarding the subject of the Israeli pilot, he was actually Palestinian, as you are correct the end of the film states his is an Israeli. I'm not sure why, but it is probable that the pilot was Jewish, and after all the unpleasantness of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict in the 50's and 60's the change in nationality was politically motivated.

As for the Argentine pilots, I believe that Skare has answered that @217.

Dear Cornishair and others, Chileans have no real desire to invade Argentina. Nor for that matter Peru or Bolivia, but if they attack us, they'll get a bloody nose as we are well defended. A lot of residents from San Juan and Mendoza come here for vacation and they are very well received. Most of them realize that their Peso will eventually collapse and have bank accounts in Montevideo. The once very highly regarded Argentinean Air-force is a complete disaster and their army is completely demoralized with outdated poorly maintained equipment. Their navy is somewhat better off, and well armed, but our two Scorpène class submarines will keep them neutralized for the next few years. What's really sad is that they always blame everyone else for their problems, when frankly they have no one to blame except themselves. If we do take Patigonia... LAN flights to Port Stanley will be completely assured.

@227 - you have the right to believe whatever you want to believe but it doesn't make it true. You have yet to produce one bit evidence to back up your claim, except some stupid stereotype, made up quite often as propaganda in WW2.

In 1944, the allies invaded Italy calling it the soft underbelly of Europe, believing that it would be easier to gain a foothold here than in France where the Germans were imbedded. After months of fighting, the allied forces renamed Italy the 'tough old boot', because the fighting was so savage, boot was in reference to the shape of Italy. Hardly the pushovers and cowards you would have us believe. The invasion of Normandy was easier in the long run.

Also the Roman Empire, whilst not as large as the British Empire, endured for over 1000 years. Again not bad going for a people who give up easily and run away.

As regards to the Argentinians, please try telling 2 Para how 'easy' it was to defeat their troops at the battle of Goose Green and Darwin, a battle that went on for 24hrs, or the Scots Guards how they should have just walked up Mount Tumbledown as the Argentinians couldn't fight and would just run away.

    Give up.

Applying his logic, the Australians, Kiwis, British, Indian army, French etc. were all cowards because they got their arses well and truly whooped by a significantly smaller force of Turks in the Gallipoli campaign who actually took a far greater number of casualties than the allies.

Yet, strangely, most historians seem to agree that it was the crass incompetence of the likes of Churchill, the Admiralty and the high command that was to blame for that defeat, whilst the actual soldiers were brave beyond compare in the most trying of circumstances.

You'd certainly have a hard job making out that the 140,000+ casualties, who were killed and wounded with their backs to the sea, were running away.

@239 - really? Then if this surrending to a smaller fighting force is a genetic trait for Italians and Argentinians, how do you explain the worst defeat in British military history? The Fall of Singapore? A Japanese force of 23,000 men defeated a British Force of 100,000 men.

I'm not brilliant at maths but even I know that the Japanese were outnumbered by more than 4-1. So this genetic trait must be part of the British genetic make up too. So please take inane racist ramblings to where they'll be appreciated, the BNP website.

  • The Chilean perspective

Hey, back to the point........“We were prepared for war with Chile”
    @36 Pirate hunter..........
I have a confession to make.... Due to the treasonous behavior from the Argentine Junta in 1978 towards us, I must proceed with full disclosure and admit an almost degenerate sexually perverse sensation every time I hear bad news about their government.
Having said that, the truth is that “operation soberania” was the best thing that could have happened to us. It woke us up to the fact that we live in a dangerous neighborhood, it focused all politicians and the military on the important goal of modernizing the defence force so it could, if needed fight all three at the same time(Arg, Peru, Bol.) and win. Today we have reached this goal and even though war is never going to happen we are nonetheless prepared.
Chile's military spending is USD$6.2 billion, much more than the USD$5.3 billion that the triple alliance spends combined.
As a result the equipment and training are NATO standard, the forces in Chile are admired by the population and even though we still have “conscription” No conscripts have been incorporated for the last six years in a row, as volunteers have far outstripped the positions available.
Argentina with only 9 operational skyhawks remaining is a shadow of its former self and the comments that people like pirate hunter make are ridiculous, just like the Argentine government request that we train some of their navy cadets.
Finally I would like to share what General Mario “the coward” Menendez said.
In Dec. 1978 “At midday I'll cross the Andes, and at 4pm I'll be drinking a whiskey at Viña del Mar”
In April 2012 “The Chileans did not behave as brothers, they behaved as swine.”
You see, this is why we will never trust them, and will always be prepared to defend ourselves..

I pity you for being so lonely, bitter, twisted and wrought asunder by anger and wholly irrational hatred and prejudices that you can't even see that you and your kind can't even see that you do untold damage to Britain and, more importantly, the cause of the Islanders and their right to self-determination.

It is much the same with your 'buddies': Frank and Be Serious: noisy racists who do infinitely more harm than good and only serve to convince people that the ridiculous colonialist stereotypes painted by the repellent Kirchner woman, and her propaganda machine, must be true and that Britain and British values must be as anachronistic as she says. Anyone who doesn't conform to your extreme, minority, set of isms and prejudices is set upon and has their reputation savaged .. until that is someone doesn't back down, and then, like all bullies, you get flustered.

In final closing, Conqueror, look back at your own rant and reflect on the fact that your words put you in a league with countries like Iran, where people are put to death not for harming others, but for being different. That must really fill you with pride.

    @Conqueror

You know, doctors and psychologists around the world routinely recognise and treat a condition called ego-dystonic sexual orientation (or just plain old 'internalised homophobia').

People suffering from this condition can most commonly be identified by the extreme nature of their hateful homophobic rhetoric – language and feelings that is far more extreme than is natural for any heterosexual who is confident in their own sexual orientation. In short, these people have extremely strong same-sex desires, but the idea of being 'gay' conflicts so strongly with their own self-image, or with the beliefs they were indoctrinated with as a child, that they dread any contact with other homosexuals, repress their feelings and speak out in the most hateful rhetoric possible.

It is a terribly cruel condition; but the good news is that there are people out there who can help sufferers understand and come to terms with their feelings.

    Ouch......

looks like conqueror got taught a good lesson in this thread. I am hopeful he will read a learn by posters such as Skare and a falklander, mollymauk.

Unfortunately, for many of us readers and participants, conquerors contributions to debate of late have been nothing short of racist and bigoted diatribes. And if anyone doubts the accusations I've just made, just read his contributions to this thread...
What I find surprising is that MercoPress will censure anyone's contribution if made in Spanish (understandable though debatable) but racist and bigoted diatribes such as conquerors are never censured (not only a debatable behaviour but also irresponsible and incomprehensible).

@243 -Be Serious - you are a pillock. Try reading some BOOKS. You know those things they keep in libraries, they're not hard to find, just about every town and city in the UK have them.

You don't get irony do you.

But getting back to my post you didn't say whether, given the EVIDENCE, you agree that the British also have this perculiar genetic trait that apparently affects the Argentinians and Italians? You also didn't comment on the invasion of Italy in 1944, which showed the Italians fighting aggressively and over a significantly prolonged period against the allies - Italy = Tough Old Boot. Or maybe you think that the British and American troops weren't trying hard enough.

What evidence would that be then?

Anyway took your advice and went down the library and found this :-

Allied situation in Italy - Liddell Hart
”Both invading armies, the fifth (US) and the eighth (British) had lost heavily and become exhausted by their frontal attacks up the leg of the Italian peninsula...progress had become all too like the battering ram process of the western front in the first world war. The great disadvantage at which the Germans had been placed in Sept by their Italian ally's simultaneous capitulation and change of sides coupled with the triple Anglo-American landings at Reggio, Taranto and Salerno had been retrieved and the Germans were able to prolong the defence of the peninsula”.

Not saying Mr Hart was right but he was there, unlike you and me. Have you any sources you would like to quote back?

Just where do you get your tactical knowledge from? Wikipaedia? Or are you just an ignorant loud mouth prat who talks big about sh1te he knows NOTHING about?

Tactical knowledge? Where did that come from. Seems you're the one doing all the shouting. Again nice line in abuse and insults, you and Billy have a lot in common.

    Dear Argentinians,

It is all very well revelling in Conqueror being taught a lesson, but the lesson is somewhat negated if you don't reciprocate by policing your own extremists .. and trust me, there are plenty of them. Forget the 'he said she said' shit about who said what first; because the truth of it is that the first spark of misunderstanding was so long ago that none of us truly knows what is truth and what is taken on blind faith .. and one way or another, we are ALL descendants of both immigrants and conquerors whose ancestors are responsible for many a deed that is shameful by today's standards.

Enough of the jingoistic crap and the sweeping generalisations. If we engage in that, then, in our own petty little ways (and I admit that I am no saint) we are all as bad as anyone else and are simply playing into the hands of those brainless rednecks who speak in sweeping generalisations, only understand violence and can't get their heads around the fact that it is perfectly possible for people who disagree to live together harmoniously as friends and neighbours.

Parley and entente cordiale always has, and always will, achieve far greater things than guns, racism, bigotry and all this talk of hate, war and old scores to be settled.

Nothing material changed just shortened, I mean lets face it leprcon has the attention span of a fruit fly, if its not in a film or a TV series he has trouble keeping up.

Anyway to cut a long story short the Italians capitulated very quickly and allowed the Germans to do all the hard fighting. That was the point but to be honest I don't think you boys are on here to debate just to abuse, insult and cosy up to your new friends.

But enough of your diversions. You made a spurious claim that Italians and Argentinians militarily are genetically pre-disposed to surrendering to a smaller military force. All you have to back up your claims are stereotypes and your own personal beliefs.

I have, however, shown that there have been numerous occasions when military forces from countries (other than the 2 you say are genetically pre-disposed to surrendering) have surrendered to smaller forces.

So, you have been trying to constantly divert the attention away from the fact that your original comments where erroneous at best or blatantly racist at worst. Then you resorted to name calling to cover up the fact that you have no hard evidence, just your own beliefs.

Next time try reading books from a public library. You see when you have your 'own' library, you only buy books that you like, and therefore would be biased towards your way of thinking. The best way to understand any situation is to read books from various sources which will allow you to come to a better understanding of the events leading up to, during and after the incident. It's a little thing called research and it can be a useful tool.

Oh and I am here to debate, just because all you can do is fling accusations without evidence to back it up, is your problem. There's no need to throw your toys out of the pram because people don't agree with you.

@307 - Resorting to insults again. Tut, tut.

I never said that the Italian and Argentine troops had never surrendered to a smaller military force. I am disputing your claim that it is genetically pre-disposed for them to do so. I'm still waiting for you to provide EVIDENCE on your statement that Italian and Argentine troops are genetically pre-disposed to surrender to a smaller military force.

I have given numerous examples of non-Italian or Argentine forces (including British) that have surrendered to a smaller force which makes your claims spurious at best.

I have forwarded a supposition that it was a lack of morale among the troops that caused these troops to surrender to a smaller force. Morale is a factor that has been recognised for hundreds of years. This is why propaganda is so important in any conflict or war.

You undermine the morale of the enemy making him think his situation is untenable, whilst at the same time trying to bolster the morale of your own troops. The undermining of morale will then, hopefully, lead to a breakdown in the chain of command, desertion by troops and eventually to their surrender as a fighting force.

This is an important tool of war, as the quicker you can get your enemy to surrender the fewer casualties will be sustained by both sides.

Oh and that's ex-military 'NHS' carer, whose seen their fair share of battlefields and battle casualties.

P.S. I have a wicked sense of humour, you have to, to work in the NHS! As for whether I'm thick or not, at least I don't make generalised assumptions on people based on the race, nationality, religion or colour.

Quite a few Anglo Argentines fought for the British.

Far more German Argentines - from a far larger population pool (3 million) fought for the Nazi. Far more joined the Nazi party. This is a fact - the country with the largest membership of the GERMAN Nazi Party outside of Germany was Argentina where there was an estimated 500,000 card carrying Nazis!

@315 - back to the insults, and still no answers.

I freely admit I was wrong about the listing at the end of the Battle of Britiain film, but I was doing it from memory, not having seen the film for a few years.

However, nothing else I have said was incorrect. You, however, are unable to offer anything but constant insults to those who disagree with your narrow-minded racial slurs. You cannot even admit to the possibility that you could be wrong, never mind even admit it.

Believe what you like regarding whether I was a soldier I know the truth and that's all that matters. After all it's because of men and women like me throughout our history - who decided to honour their country by serving - that you have the freedom of speech and thought. But it doesn't mean that I, or anyone who disagrees with you are imbeciles or are wrong.

Now grow up and act like an adult instead of a petulant child.

About 600 Argentines, many of them Anglo Argentines, but also of other ascendance, joined the RAF and the RCAF during WWII, 122 were killed in action.

Most returned to Argentina after the War and flew for Aerolineas Argentinas.

There is are a couple of very good books on the subject: “Alas de Trueno” (Wings of Thunder) and “Nacidos con Honor” (Born with Honour) written by Claudio Meunier.

600 anglo argentines joined the RAF and RCAF after the Battle of Britain had been won - and they weren't all pilots.
And as stated they were far outweighed by the argentine supporting the nazis - until argentina laughably declared war against the nazis on 28th March 1945 - after the war had been virtually won.

@319 - I asked in post 244 whether you agreed or not that given that the British had surrender to a smaller Japanese force in Singapore, if that meant that the British also had this perculiar genetic trait that you accuse both the Italians and Argentines of having.

You have constantly ignored the fact that you made a bigoted, stereotyped comment about them, and have yet to deliver any evidence that this is genetic.

You have constantly prevaricated, twisted and avoided answering this issue about evidence, because there is none.

You brought up a book by Liddell Hart, an expert at warfare, admittedly, but not an expert at genetics so no real help to you there. Yet you still avoid the initial issue, YOUR comments that you cannot back up at all, and resort to name calling to try and distract people from the issue.

I can admit when I”m wrong, but you aren't adult enough to admit that the comments you made were out of line. Your constant childish diversions from the original topic are growing old now, and since you haven't got the decency to admit that you were wrong or at least to produce evidence that would back up your claim, conversing with you is pointless.

But we have shown that in contrast to the previous claim that 800 argentine pilots fought in the Battle of Britain - the correct number is ZERO.
And volunteers do not compensate for the argentine government collaborating with the nazis throughout the war and providing a safe haven for thousands of fleeing nazi criminals after the war.

@13 Skåre “I have met massively more Argentinians of Italian ancestry than I ever have of Spanish”. I suppose if I didn't know the origin of my ancestors I might decide Italian was slightly less naff than Spanish :)) There are thousands of Brazilians in Europe, who because of an Italian grandparent claim Italian (EU) citizenship. For some reason the vast majority, having attained their 'Italian' status, have no interest in Italy or their ancestors, but instead head straight for London.

Presumably you accept that children inherit their parents genes.
If yes then we can concentrate on the Italians. If not .....forget it.

You suggested that the Italians fought tooth and nail to defend their homeland when in fact this was shown to be nonsense because the Italian Army capitulated early doors and allowed the Germans to carry on fighting.

Did I say this was a bad thing - no. I even suggested that the Italian culture for loving the good things of life was far preferable to War.

If you are saying that you had never heard of the Italian Army's propensity to surrender before I mentioned it, then you are a liar.
