Probably detained under the relevant mental health act.
The man is a nut who represents a danger to himself, anyone foolhardy enough to sail with him and whoever finishes up trying to rescue him when (NB not if) it goes wrong.

Just a lunatic adventurer. Wonder if the loss of his 3 mates affected him at all. Just one look at the sailing vessel renders her unfit to complete a voyage. Set him free and let him solo out of Chile! Problem solved. The Kiwis don't want him back. Let the Chileans save the money for upkeep and his imprisonment. Deport the Crew to their homelands. Problem solved!

Expropiate the illegal ship, set it on fire and deport him back to face the law In his native land, this is what we all should do to people who break the laws like the illegal aliens illegally occupying Islas Malvinas Argentina. Send all this criminals back home.
