Yawn. Keep grasping at that solitary straw, Turkeyneck. You can almost hear the weary tone as the Colombian official says: “...if President Cristina Fernandez wishes to take it to the presidential summit, well it will also be considered...”

President Cristina Fernandez: Sigh for Them, Argentina
¡Qué sorpresa! This news comes as no surprise to me: I thought the topic was a tiresome subject for the summit anyway. Cristina’s rise from obscurity to become first the powerful wife of Argentina's president, Nestor Kirchner to the present, she needs plenty of exposure. Like her husband, she’s a populist paradox, part demagogue, part fame-seeker, and part humanitarian. In fact, she and Nestor have actually done some genuine good, regrettably mingled with mismanagement, corruption, and tyranny. Let’s watch the drama and see what happens in Cartagena.

Colombia says: We have more important issues to discuss at this summit than Argentina's complex over the Falkland Islands.

Argentina yells: NOTHING IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE NATION OF ARGENTINA AND THE RETAKING OF THE MALVINAS!!!! JAJAJAJAJA

This is how diplomacy works down there.

Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Belize, Grenada, Jamaica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and The Bahamas also have Elizabeth II as their head of state. That's 10 members of the OAS out of 35. Nearly 30% of the OAS members have Elizabeth II as their head of state...

#3 I wouldn't say she was obscure before she was First Lady though, she was famous as a Senator and Congresswoman in the 90s as the most anti-Menemist, anti-privatisation rebel in the Peronist Party, which shows the consistency of her politics today in building an alternative to “orthodox economics”. I'm glad you noted her humanitarianism, but tyranny?

    @10

Are you saying your queen, her family and cronies are free of serious corruption?

She and her family have increased their wealth massively WHILST being in power. Apart from being a serious conflict of interest her attention should be on the complicated business of running a country. She shouldnt have the time to be making huge business deals on the side.

Where has the 2.1 billion for Aerolineas gone?

La Campora is a political democratic party or a quasi political organization that finds itself in places of political and business influence purely by chance?!

There is freedom of press and she has her many critics but there is more than one state televison channel continuously broadcasting propaganda for your queen. Theres the football league (a very popular entity) with TV rights funded by the government which means they slot their propaganda in the many breaks. There really are more important things to be worring about than -Las Malvinas- in one of the most blessed countries in the world for natural resources per capita. It means that people are in a constant state of mild anxiety regarding Las Malvinas all because the government is manipulating them. Its not the Falkland Islanders fault that Argentina has consistently failed to get its sh*t together politically, economically etc. And so they have to continuously deal with Argentina's resentment and jealousy. Nationalism is never -NEVER- a good thing - it only serves those in power.

There are restrictions on importing many things and massively high 50% tax on most imports that do get through. Why should the government decide what people can or can-t buy? The government is making it very difficult to import books for crying out loud.

I could go on... And yet you continue to think your queen is perfect?

If CFK is not capable of telling the truth about the history of the Falkland Islands and is not going to acknowledge that the Argentinian version of events is false then she is a poor excuse for a head of state of a modern country.

Perhaps the other leaders in South America already acknowledge that the official British version is the true history of the Falkland Islands and simply do not want to get involved. WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Dr Johnson once said, 'Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel.'

In other words, the Argentine government have played all their cards, leaving Cristina and her cronies with only one card to play to keep Argentina from spilling into the abyss, the Falklands, so she shouts about it a lot and calls all 'patriots' in Argentina to arms.

And like the Galteri government before her, her grip on power will only hold as long as she can hold up the facade of Argentina being able to do something about the issue. She (that peace-loving individual that she is) can't invade the Falklands so she tries diplomacy instead. However, she and her government have tried and failed at diplomacy, mainly as their claims to the Islands are laughable, and go against the UN charter for all people to have self-determination. Any support (if any) they had regarding this issue has melted away, because quite frankly everyone in the World can see their bullying tactics, and are quite frankly fed up of all the hysterionics.

Her Falklands distraction method won't last forever, and then she'll tumbled from her ivory tower, and the people of Argentina will discover just how badly they've been lied to, and what dire straits they're in financially.

Julian wants a bigger navy and he wants it now.

The will only have a small window of opportunity until the new carriers come on line and I can't see Argentina being organised enough to get their political and military timing right.

@18 - I honestly doubt they will try at least not in the immediate future.

Firstly, THEY believe that there's a nuclear sub in the area and the UK will never confirm or deny it so they'll never be sure. The last time their navy tangled with a RN sub, only one ship was sunk and the Argentines pulled all their ships into port, and there they remained for the duration of the war.

Secondly, Argentina's armed forces are now some of the worst equipped in the region, and the government don't really trust them, memories of the Junta are still fresh in Argentina. British forces are now some of the best equipped in the world, and have spent the last 10 years or so fighting in wars, so they are also very experienced at war fighting.

Finally, the UK could (not necessarily would) invoke article 5 of the NATO charter, if sovereign British territory were invaded, which means that our NATO allies would have to honour their committments and give us assistance.

I'm not saying that Brig Thompsen isn't correct in his analysis, but it maybe a few years before Argentina's military is up to scratch, and our new air craft carriers should be operational by that time. In the meantime, Argentina's economy is falling down around them, but their government would rather bury their heads in the sand than deal with this most important issue.

Any attempt to take the Falklands by force would be disastrous for Argentina, and would also show their so called 'peaceful' government up for what they really are.

@17 Your last paragraph. Are you sure? The reality is that Peron started the “current” round of claims to the Falklands. When he died, did argies think everything he'd ever come out with was wrong? When Galtieri indulged the same falsities, did the argie lumpen proletariat reject the lies? They did not. And now CFK is treading the same path. Relying on the argie inferiority psychosis. Argies are mentally insecure, congenitally psychotic and indisputably inferior. Simple research reveals that there are more psychiatrists in argieland than anywhere else in the world. Look at the “comments” of the argie bloggers that appear here. Boastful. Blind to real facts. Denial of their real history. All classic symptoms. They expect to “win”. One day. Incapable of accepting that Britain and the Falkland Islanders have an even greater determination that “they” will not! Even if CFK is tumbled, argies and argieland have to be shown that they cannot, they will not, win. Even if they try for ten thousand years. There is only one real solution. They have to be taught a lesson. A lesson they didn't learn in 1982. A lesson that they can work out for themselves, or a lesson a thousand times more painful than the one they were given in 1982. Without a lesson, would you reckon on a maniac becoming sensible by himself?

@21 - Conquerer, I agree with your analysis.

Maybe if they're stupid enough to try and invade again, the price of peace will be for them to remove the sovereignty claim from their constitution, sign a treaty recognising that the Falklands belong to no one but the Falkland Islanders, and that they will promise the Falkland Islanders, the British and the rest of the world to STFU about it forever.

However, that's wishful thinking, as Argentina never honours it's treaties. Even the one where they recognised that the Falklands were British territory, signed in 1850.

#19 “until the new carriers come on line” Really, as long as you have the Typhoons with the Dauntless based there (as well as reportedly a Trafalgar-class submarine) there is no window whatsoever. However, there’s real doubt if the F-35 Harrier replacements will ever be viable for your two carriers, which will cause even further delays.
#20 I agree the Argentine navy acted cowardly, but their air force showed amazing bravery and ingenuity. (Fortunately for the British, the French betrayed the Exocet operating codes, or the story could have been very different.)
#21 “A lesson they didn't learn in 1982.” Oh yes they did learn lots of lessons. One was to never ruse a company of British Gurkhas with a false white flag...

The military threat is long gone as their air force is a shambles and would never be able to support an invasion, much less their now pathetic navy. The army is even more demoralized and very poorly equipped.
The real danger is all this regional diplomacy that actually seems to have been working. A politician in Chile was recently forced to formally apologize because he used the term “Falklands Islands” in public. (Mind you, Chile was nearly invaded by our “brothers” in 1978 and since then they've violated three major bi-lateral treaties without as much as even an apology.) Add to that the threat of suspending the weekly LAN service as well a denial of shipping access you begin to get concerned.

Your right about their Airforce. Then again they were land based, outnumbered the Harriers 7:1 and the British lacked a viable AEW system. I would expect to see any half decent modern contemporary airforce achieve the same results.
Wasn't there rumours at the time, that French Aerospatial technicians were in Argentina converting their aircraft and assembling the exocets for firing.

They were in Argentina as private contractors and there were also other “experts” from the UK and United States here helping to collect intel. The most important was radar surveillance across the border of Argentine air traffic. The French played both sides as they also later assisted the RAF with information relating to the Exocet's code and homing radar.
On another note, blowing up Mount Pleasant's runway would not disable the 4 Typhoons based in the Falklands as I understand there is an alternative dirt field for that scenario. Not good for a Boeing or Airbus but perfectly workable for fighters and even refueled Globemasters.

There will plenty of observers at the summit and they'll be scrutinizing the committees and the talks but I can't help thinking that Argentina will do the talking, members and observers will do the listening but the poor old Falklands will be mute is the UK is just an observer. Still, Argentina even uses the fact that the Falklands are on the same tectonic plate as a reason for sovereignty (hilarious) and would seek to deny islanders any kind of voice. I think one day the Falklands might host the summit as they have been established longer than most south american countries and because of the war mongering of Argentina will probably outlive most of them too.

@33 Yup it helps to show what a ridiculous mindset the Malvinistas have - stuck in a time warp where they cling onto their warped indoctrinated version of events that happened nearly two centuries ago - desperate to snatch victory from the claws of defeat, no matter how hopeless. Meanwhile their basketcase country crumbles around them thanks to a government that's half inept, half corrupt.

I'm Ex RAF, 2ATAF, RAF Germany. In the dark bad old days of the cold war, we excercised regularly for our wartime role. One of the things we were particularly good at was rapid runway repair, our runways could be back in operation in hours, following the heaviest Warsaw pact air raids. I'm sure it's a skill our engineers still have. It's irrelevent anyway, with the radar that's there now. Argentine aircraft would be detected on take off and intercepted miles away from Mount Pleasant any survivors would have to get past the Type 45. Any survivors from that engagement would then be engaged by Rapier SAM, some miles from Mount Pleasant. Just say they did by some miracle, manage that, they woud then have to get back to their base. Personaly I can never see it happening.

Malvinas are part of Argentina, the control nowadays is not held by people living in the islands, but for corporations, and the darkest sides of the British society, those who hate democracy, who care nothing about the islanders, about peace (because war fulfills their pockets), about environment, about future. quote: “control nowadays is not held by people living in the islands, but for corporations, and the darkest sides of the British society, those who hate democracy”.

Do you honestly believe all the crap you read on the internet? Is it the TRUTH? Maybe the Queen of England is a Lizard who runs Washington, Moscow, Beijing and Paris through her minions, above her the Zionist hords with their banking cartels, who according to Mel Gibson and Sean Penn have ruled the West since the Jews executed Jesus on the Cross and Nathan Rothschild inseminated Hitlers mother with his seed to produce the Anti Christ Adolph Hitler. 9/11 was a planned demolition, there were no planes, it was Zionists and the Queen who did it!

Should I go on? Sound failure? Vermin I suggest you get a life!

I would add that corporations are a plague on societies but they don't just emanate from Britain, most of them multinational and emanate out of the US, some of them are Argentine. Imperialism is a widely used word, I prefer to call it Corporatism and Argentinian society is as much a product of it as our own. Last time I checked Argentine corporations were busy taking Paraguayan and Bolivian raw resources but the insane (Argentine) hypocritical so called anti-Imperialists just want to blame Britain. I think you should start with your own country and work your way down through the list, America being pretty high up, followed by China, Germany, Russia, Brazil, etc.

Then when you've finished maybe land redistribution to the people who land was stolen from them by European settlers over the period of the last 500 years in South America, especially Argentina. Then maybe Vermin, when your country has finished all that you can climb on top of your pedestal and take a good spin! Just be careful not to fall off in a great big pile of shit again!

Honoria: I entered into the Chilean Navy as a mid-shipman just before the Tratado de Paz y Amistad in 1984 and eventually served on a frigate with officers that had very intimate knowledge of the Falklands war. All the information I know is second and third hand and certainly some of it was embellished, but I believe at least half of it had to be true.
Although a few Chileans were sympathetic of the Argentinean plight, almost all serving in the armed forces were in complete support for the British.
In Chile, we were all in awe of the SAS forces, but our Argentine “brothers” were absolutely frightened by the Gurkhas and their long Kukris. They believed the myth (or maybe true tradition) that the Nepalese draw blood with the knives each time the blade was drawn from the sheath. There are stories of Gurkhas beheading Argentine defenders and ignoring white flags of surrender. I have no evidence of it actually happening, but the stories continue to circulate.
I’ve been for several years in inactive reserves, but try to keep informed of non-classified reports from the SIN. It is open knowledge that the Argentinean navy and air force could not handle support for another invasion.

Chipping in what I know, there were several fake Argentine white flag / surrender incidents at Goose Green, not just one. Others occurred elsewhere on the approach to Stanley. Haven't heard of the Gurkha's incident though.

    @57 - Chicureo.

”In Chile, we were all in awe of the SAS forces, but our Argentine “brothers” were absolutely frightened by the Gurkhas and their long Kukris. They believed the myth (or maybe true tradition) that the Nepalese draw blood with the knives each time the blade was drawn from the sheath. There are stories of Gurkhas beheading Argentine defenders and ignoring white flags of surrender. I have no evidence of it actually happening, but the stories continue to circulate.”

The British did put out a lot of propaganda about the Gurkha's. In fact, the only place the Argentines actually had to face the Gurkha's was on Mount William. The Argentine defenders abandoned their positions rather than face them. Anything regarding 'beheadings' was rubbish as their were no Argentinans for them to behead (should they have wanted to), and no Gurkha would have ever acted so dishonourably as to ignore a white flag.

The only incident that I can find of ignoring the white flag in the Falklands War, was done by the Argentine's, when they flew the white flag at Goose Green and then opened fire on the 2 Para representative who had come forwards to negotiate with them.

Although this incident made British forces weary of white flags, they didn't ignore their obligations under the law of armed conflict.

All of this has been well documented, but like always, people like to embellish stories for whatever reason.

The only case I can find of a Gurkha beheading someone was in Afghanistan. The Gurkha's had been told by the chain of command to bring back proof of any kills of the Taleban. One Gurkha decided the best way to do this was to cut of the head of the guy he'd already killed.

It caused quite a lot of consternation among British authorities, strangely the Afghan authorities thought it was a perfectly reasonable thing to do. Said Gurkha was returned to the UK for a good telling off and re-education in the laws of armed conflict.

It is the tradition amongst Gurkhas that “once the Kukri is drawn blood must be shed”.

However in the absence of any enemies to cut up, they usually just nick a thumb before returning the Kukri to its sheath.

Yes, it seems that contrary to what she insisted, there no consensus on this subject at all -
“[Kirchner] was furious, we are told, because of the lack of full, complete support for Argentina's claim of control of the Falkand Islands,” Newman said.

“We understand she was very, very angry that [leaders] didn't even mention the dispute over the islands with the UK.”

“She was overheard saying, 'This is pointless. Why did I even come here?'”

She does not seem to be much of a stateswoman -

#62 I wouldn't agree with calling our royal women sluts. But calling for the death of an elected leader is even worse, no? Especially one like Cristina, who is so much more regal than any hereditary royals at the moment =)

#66 I think very few statesmen and women would sound ”states(wo)manlike” if we secretly recorded and broadcast their private off the cuffs; look what happened to Gordon Brown at the last British election. Anyway I don't adore my Queen for being a stateswoman but for being a strong fighter for justice; if some of the right wing leaders left in Latin America had sold her out and turned a blind eye to Cameron's robbing of the natral resources of their own continent, then she had every right to be angry

Regards LEPRecon. I think it's standard Int gathering, to obtain a photograph of the face of Taliban killed in contacts. I also belive this particular taliban was a suspected leader. The Gurkha in question didn't have access to a digital camera, so he used his initiative. He was sent home and suitably advised. As for the Gurkha tradition of drawing blood every time they draw the Kukri, I think this is a myth, though it does add to their well earned reputation as fearsome warriors. I believe they use their Kukri for everything from cutting wood too hand to hand combat. Have you heard anyhing different?

    Apr 16th, 2012 - 05:27 pm - Link - Report abuse 0
  • LEPRecon

@72 - Nope I haven't heard anything different. Regarding the Gurkha beheading the body, I think he was just adapting to the circumstances, if he didn't have a camera.

What I find most telling is the British reaction to the incident compared to the Afghan reaction. It was almost like another day to them.

@67 - I had the honour to work with the 'scary little buggers' for a short while. Definitely top quality blokes. Never has this country (Britain) had more loyal friends.

And of course the Gurkha motto: 'Better to die, than to live on your knees.'

I remember reading that the Japanese were petrified of the Gurkhas in WW2, so no doubt their reputation as tough warriors is well deserved, but they are also honourable men too.

Agreed, it's a shame on our country that they have not been treated better. Joanna Lumley did a fantastic job and a double shame that she had too. In my opinion it does not go far enough. Any man who shares the same uniform as me and is prepared to die with me, deserves the same pay, pension , rights and entitlements that I have.
I was watching a documentary on the campaign for equal rights for Gurkhas. I think it may have been on Youtube. There was an interview with an ex Gurkha, made to live in Nepal. He was a Corporal, wounded on the Falklands. Shrapnel from a 155mm ripped open his hip, a real nasty wound, he nearly lost his life. After his wound healed, he was medicaly discharged back to Nepal. He had not served long enough to receive a pension. This guy is still suffering from the wound today and needs further treatment and the bastards will not let him into the UK. It's enough to makeyou weep and a fucking national disgrace. Equal rights for all Gurkhas, no matter when or how long they served, that's what I say.

@74 - I agree with you. I know that Gurkha's who join up now have equal rights, but unfortunately it's not retrospective, only since Hong Kong was given back to China. Before then I don't think any Gurkha regiments spent much time in the UK mainland (although I'm happy to be corrected if that's the case).

The reason they weren't given equal pay and terms of service had something to do with parity with Indian Gurkha's. Not sure how it works, but I think the Indians were afraid they'd get no Gurkhas joining their mob if we paid better wages. Probably one of the many things agreed on Indian independence.

I'll admit I'm a bit vague on the subject, so I could be barking up the wrong tree.

I believe you are right. Young Nepalese men try out for the British Regiments first and then for the Indian. I know that one of the problems they have is that because their physique is adapted to the Himalayas, they have problems running. I see no problem with that, Everyone knows GHRKHAS DON'T RUN.
