    I'm glad to see La Campora will be there. I'm really glad that I don't have to live in that country. It's become like that TV show were Chavez says stuff and then everyone claps.

    I guess it's just backwards people, doing backwards things. You cannot expect a lot from them.

    @1 Yeah but the backward people do get paid for attending the rally. The intelligent Argentines stay away from this kind of nonsense.

    What is the betting it will end in a riot?

    North Korea his sending their premier rally organiser to show them how it should be done. I can see it now, row after row of devotees, in dead straight lines, wearing pale blue suits and waving pale blue pompoms in perfect unison. The tension rising to a crescendo as the glorious mother of the nation mounts the dias. Tears streaming down faces, first aiders attending to those for whom the whole emotional experience , is just to much.
    Bloody comic opera, she makes a political decision and then fills a football stadium full of people to carp on about how clever she is.

    I'm betting that La Campora will have filled the Stadium with a mixture of threats and back-handers. I suppose they will be leading the cheering as well with flash cards for the rest of the crowd................

    Buenos Aires April 26 (EFE) – An evening performance was given by the State Merited Chorus at the Casa Rosada on Friday to celibrate the victory of nationalizing YPF.
    President of the Republic Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, who also carries the titles of first secretary of the Justicialist Party, first chairman of the Argentine National Resources Defense Commission and supreme commander of the Argentine military forces, enjoyed the performance.
    She sent congratulations to the servicepersons on the forthcoming 200th anniversary of the founding of the Argentinean Republic, acknowledging the enthusiastically cheering audience.
    Seeing the performance were senior party officials, armed forces and power organs, social organizations, ministries and national institutions and officials in the fields of science, education, literature and art, public health and media and officers of the Argentine Internal Security Forces.
    Invited there were overseas compatriots' delegations, foreign diplomatic envoys, members of the military attaché corps here and foreign guests.
    Among the numbers of the performance that began with the national anthem were mixed chorus “Song of Cristina’s Bravery and Resolve”, “Long Live Generalissimo Fernandez”, mixed duet “The Country I Am Defending”, a series of male chorus “Motherland Calls You”, “The Victorious Parade” and male chorus “We Will Defend General Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner with Our Lives”

    When any war starts between the UK and Argentina you will be given or lent Chinese or Russian military hardware ie crap.

    @36 Pugol H.
    I may have spelled it wrong. Essentialy it means, a cupboard or a place where you conceal a secret. For example. A gay man may have been hiding his sexuality for one reason or another. When he comes out and openly admits it, he can be described as, “As coming out of the closet.” It's not a derogatory term. So what was saying was, that Chicureo, was hiding the secret, that he is a train spotter. The clothing, etc, you described Chicureo as wearing are associated with train spotters. Why do I get the feeling you know this already.
    @23 Chicureo
    I have just read the reviews in the press. Wow, they compared th event to the opening night of Les Miserables! I would dearly have loved to have been there. The absolute event of the social season. I cannot wait till it comes out on DVD, checking Amazon on a regular basis, no sign yet. However being a Brit (wait for it.) I suppose I'll have to make do with a pirate copy.

    The door swings both ways you know? Yes, the British army learned so much from the 1982 war, Everyone did, the navy, the army and the RAF. If it happens again we will know what to do and what not to do.

    Army's only re-equip themselves to better fight the war they have just had, not the one they are GOING to have. You saw that it Vietnam. The USA carpet bombing the jungle, like that was going to help them.

    In case anyone has fogotten we don't have any aircraft Carriers anymore that weasel Cameron saw to that. Him and his little b*tch Nick Clegg. so where does that leave us? Having to rely on our dear enemies the French for an aircraft carrier. And you know what the French are like in a crisis.

    You say that the Argentinian's don't have the military to take the Falklands well, thanks to the Conservatives, we know don't have the means to re-take them.

    And who says that the Argentine military didn't learn lessons from the 1982 war? How might they “do things differently” next time. You could argue one learns more from defeat than one does from victory.........

    @46

    The British barely need to leave Southampton to win any war with Argentina. The RG's are given far too much credit here for what they might do but in essence the UK absolutely needs to bomb the Argentine armed force bases on the mainland.

    I wouldnt imagine that is very hard to do given our military hardware.

    Buttons aren't very hard to press.

    Time is running out for the RG's though because by the end of the decade we will have not only the two Elizabetan class aircraft carriers (same size/bigger than the US Nimitz class) plus all of the planes that go with it (once they sort that issue out).

    Ticking time bomb for the RG's to make their move because we arent going anywhere.

    How could they possibly celebrate their present predicament. Only an Argentine government could have a party to show what poor politicians on the world stage they are, with backward/adhoc policies (banning book imports). Bet the party starts with the burning of British flags and ends with the burning of British flags. One things for sure, the British flag is so recognisable. Lovely to see it, wherever it is. (mind you it might need a redesign if Scotland jumps ship!).

    Agreed, that is the school of thought that McArthur came from “Remove your enemies' ability to make war at any cost”. The mistake we made last time was NOT doing that. The SAS plan to go and cause mayhem on the Argentine mainland should have been followed through on. It would have killed off home support for the war and would have made the ordinary man in the street question his own safety.

    Actually the Queen Elizabeth class of aircraft carrier will be in the region of 50,000 to 65,000 tons ( able to carry about 40 - 50 aircraft ) again, once they sort that out. I would have liked to see HMS Ark Royal and HMS Illustrious retained as carriers until the Queen Elizabeth class were ready. We do have a great navy, probably the best in the world, we just don't have enough ships.

    No we don't. HMS Illustrious has been refitted as a Helicopter carrier and HMS Ocean is an Amphibious assault ship. The royal Navy, at this time, does not have a ship that can handle fast jets.

    In fact, the Royal Navy doesn't have any fast jets now that the pen pushers in whitehall ( to man, may they all burn in hell ) have scrapped the harrier and closed RAF Whittering.

    51 The Cestrian

    Yes they are, but we don't have enough of them. Think about it. We have six type 45's and 12 type 23 Frigates right? How many ship were lost in the 1982? 6? 7? that would mean half our Navy gone, just like that. We need a Navy of AT LEAST twice the size that it is now.

    In Argentina common people is being protagonist of their own story. Mercopressure should look to europe, where people is not deciding their own future, where Spanish Government has expressed his dislike for democratic media like twitter, where characters like Angela Merkel are bringing fear in stead of solutions to people, offering to give the fruit of the european workers to the banks as an alternative to save the EURO, discussing no future, just discussing what to do tomorrow or next week.

    Of course Argentina is still a society with a lot of social inequities, but democracy is growing strong.

    Mercopress Stop lying, the image of the government HAS NOT “fallen dramatically lately”, check numbers as they are and stop showing them as you would like them to be.

    For those who really want Latinamerica to become healthier, more educated, more democratic, really independent and prosperous, please stop going against a government that has been elected by the people in a clean electoral process, against the government of the most democratic moment that Argentina has lived.

    Argentina is harming nobody else. It is just deciding what to do with its people, its production, its economy.

    Stop giving importance to the ones that still reproduce what the IMF and corporations say, after all the damage they have caused to economies like the greek one, the spanish one, the icelandic one, the spanish, portuguese or italian one.

    Those claiming against Argentina only represent corporations' interests. Some European leaders should stop giving advice and do some self-criticism after the support they have given to wars, financial speculation and capital concentration.

    China eyes Argentina's high-speed rail system

    By Tim Sheehan / The Wall Street Journal
    Friday, Jan. 27, 2012 | 10:09 PM
    In the 19th century, laborers from China helped build railroads.
    In the 21st century, the Chinese may be again doing the same -- not for backbreaking labor, but with financial and technological muscle.
    The People's Republic of China has more miles of track for high-speed trains than any country in the world, while Argentina has none. But the Chinese want in on the state's fledgling high-speed rail project. They're eager to help bankroll and build the system and, eventually, provide the trains to operate on the tracks.
    China's with the newly created Argentina High-Speed Rail Authority to share information about high-speed rail -- and wants a piece of Argentina's business.
    “Other countries want to be a part of this because they know high-speed rail can be profitable,” said Maximo Kirchner, the authority's deputy executive director. “Their ultimate interest is operating the system.”
    But experts suggest that China's economic might -- and government-backed companies -- give it an advantage.
    “China is cash-flush, and its highly subsidized industries are bankrolled with surplus government funds,” said Usha Haley, a professor of international business at Massey University in New Zealand and an expert on China's worldwide business strategies. “They're investing in infrastructure around the world ... and if they're bidding in an open-bid process, China will get that bid.”
    Argentina expects to barter part of it’s newly nationalized petroleum of about $43 billion over the next decade to build the backbone of an 800-kilometer high-speed system linking the state's major cities..
    It's too early to know what Chinese foreign investment might look like. Argentina is still forming its business plan for high-speed rail, and construction won't begin until mid- to late 2016 between Buenos Aires and San Juan. Test runs could begin as early as 2018.

    Perhaps CFK should send an invitation to South Africa's own Julius Malema now that he has been expelled from the ANC and no longer has a job. He will give CFK sound advice on nationalisation and other matters. The man is also a fan of Hugo Chavez and Robert Mugabe, they are his mentors and gurus.

    Her rally is similar to the Nuremberg rallies of the mid 1930s. Will there be torch lit pagan type marches? Will the rent a crowd chant “Leader we say yes, all Argentina hears the Leader on the people's receiver” etc.

    One day Argentina will have the government which will lead it into broad sunlit uplands

    Time is something that you don't have.
    Soon Argentina will implode.
    We will share Patagonia with Chile,
    Paraguay will get its stolen land back & Brazil will take some of your northern provinces over.
    No doubt we'll all leave BsAs as nobody wants those problems.

    European / American posters : Picture this ;
    You are a displaced agricultural worker from the interior of the country or an illegal immigrant from one of the neighbouring countries .
    You fetch up in Buenos Aires , a city of about 12m people with nothing
    and settle in a slum district in a shanty .
    Little or no prospect of work , the unions and government policy ( unrealsitic minimum wage , excessive employment protection and virulent nationalism to discourage foreign investment ) see to that.
    Along come the local Peronists and enroll you in their idea of workfare , to make you a professional demonstrator .
    Of course you are going to sign up , because from their point of view , there is nothing to lose , so of course you will cheer that mad woman and her son to the rafters.
    If you gave these people jobs and the possibilty of improving themselves , becoming middle class etc you have lost your “ client vote ”, so no Peronist govt will ever allow this to happen.
    What they were really celebrating last night was almost 70 years of this madness.
    Menem tried desperately hard to break this cycle with neo liberal economic policies and privatizations in the 90's and he is now reviled.
    There is no way out for that country , they will not get themselves out of the cycle they are in.

    I don't get the reference to a boxing match. As it was nearly all in Spanish I couldn't see the relevance of an exceptionally good Mexican boxer beating what appeared to be an Irish/American. What was your point?
    Were you inferring that the “Hispanic” peoples are superior to the hated “ANGLOS”. In some instances this may well be true but were you indicating that if this Mexican boxer was sent to the Falklands he would sort out your problem to Argentina's advantage .

    No, I want her and Fatboy dead.

    Just like they will be causing deaths in the populace due to bankruptcy (she steals the money) and absolute dispair and for her other crimes against the country.

    BUT you missed the point as usual: the Brits (which you are most certainly excluded) were expressing the logical conclusion of the Mad Bitch's policies - when all has failed, which it will, then like the Junta she will ONLY have three options left:
    1) commit suicide, but she is a coward;
    2) leave the country with all her money in foreign banks;
    3) go to war over the Falklands (there are no Malvinas).

    Get it now?

    And the more we retaliate, the worst CFK will get, until like CRIS.R says ,she will run out of choices.

    My apologies. I know nothing about boxing and care even less. I assumed Mr.Martinez was Mexican because they seem to be good at that sort of thing.
    Because Mr Macklin's parent are both from the Irish Republic and he was wearing the Irish colours I assumed he was Irish - as is his name.
    My post at #73 - remove Mexican and replace with“ an excellent Argentinian boxer”. I have no problem acknowledging that there are many top class Argentinian sportsmen.
    But back to my main point what is the relevance of this. Is it an upswelling of national pride. Does winning a boxing match mean that this is a defeat for the whole British nation? Or that all Argentinian men are as formidable as Mr Martinez and with men like him we could defeat the cowardly and despised “Anglos” and reclaim Argentina's position as one of the most powerful and loved nations on the planet ?
    OK, I may be bordering on the facetious but tell me what your point is !

    #74 You like to come across more urbane and sophisticated so I take pride in being able to unmask your more murderous side. I always thought suicide was a cowardly act, at least in the case of a leader (think bunker), but theres a fourth option, if the current struggle fails (which I think it won't) and thats to go back to the grassroots and try again

    #76 “I thought this whole bullet train thing had been stopped ?” On the contrary, the CFK government wants to show solid credible development projects on the table so that Argentines understand what they're sacrificing for. The Chinese are thrilled to make these type of technology transfers in bartering for the YPF petroleum reserves as well as for Argentina to help pay for the billions to begin production. To make sure there is no corruption, the president has placed her most trusted advisor, special transportation minister, Maximo Kirchner in charge of all the operations.

    Typical fascist showboating.

    We know that the world is in a mess. Only time will tell if CFK and her gang were on the right track, Personally I do not think so.

    Inflation I know is taking off in Argentina. Why has the Economist stopped using the official figures of inflation published the government? The answer is simple - they are not accurate and do not represent the true state of affairs. To those who voted for CFK I say, you have sown the wind and may now reap the the whirlwind.

    Thank you for your explanation -point taken.
    I often am totally confused the way these threads go - maybe it's my advanced years. Unlike most of the posters, I can remember WW2. Seeing battleships, submarines and aircraft carriers leaving the Firth of Clyde going in “harms way”
    My mother trying to explain to me why I would not see one of my aunts again as she had been killed in an air raid on Glasgow. Why my father had to go away for 5 years and why my favourite uncle had been killed helping to liberate the Netherlands. A difficult concept for a 3 year old to grasp.

    What I am trying to say is we should “cool it”with talks of war. I am amazed at the amount of abuse shouted across these forums and to my shame I have been dragged in on an emotional level. The old adage of “engage brain before hitting the keyboard” should be the watch word.

    Talk of nuclear war is total rubbish. No one but an idiot would countenance that action... Luckily, our armed forces are not idiots although some of our politicians are.!
    I personally know very little of Argentina and its people. I have met and talked with a few of them on different occasions and found them pleasant,civilized people - likewise with the Falkland Islanders. This habit of denegrating a whole nation is nonsense. People are just people and should be treated as such. It's governments that try to unite their populations by telling them that they are the chosen ones and have right on their side.

    Why all the insults to CFK's looks ? OK, she has had cosmetic surgery done to her face probably as a sign of insecurity but so have tens of thousands of women especially in the USA. Criticise her policies, not her appearance.

    So, could we raise the debate from schoolboy shouting from some of the posts to a more adult level. Would some of the posters actually behave like this face-to-face ? They probably would - question answered !

    You seem too much of a trusting gentleman to be crossing swords with any malvinistas.
    Be warned that they will insult you, twist your words & (gasp!)even blatantly lie to you.
    They have no honour & will drag up any & every piece of dirt if it furthers their cause.
    They are petulant like children who have never been told “no”.
    They must always win & must have their own way & get very snaky when they can't get it.
    They defeat in the Falklands has scarred their psyche & l imagine that its eating them up inside.
    Thats why its so much fun to taunt them! l know its naughty but its irresistable!
    Just friendly advice!
    PS, lf you encounter a rabidly anti-Brit Dutchman called Fido Dido, you should inform him of your uncle in the liberation of the Netherlands.
    He has a short memory.

    I would like to know what portion of the Argentine population lives below the breadline. It is not unusual for the destitute in any country trto follow populist leaders.

    CFK is a female caudillo and gives hope to the downtrodden. When she does not deliver the goods she will be out like de la Ru(in)a in 2001 and leave the Casa Rosada by helicopter.

    Of course I will be castigated by others for this posting but I do not care and will not lose any sleep. These posts are a cathartic for those on either side of the political fence
