ARGENTINA sparked outrage last night after running a TV advert showing an Argie Olympian doing step-ups on a British War Memorial to our fallen heroes in the Falklands.

The Monument in question is NOT a “British War Memorial to any fallen heroes in the Falklands”
The monument in question is a WWI *VICTORY* monument, as clearly chiseled on its granite:
“VICTORY”
It’s written on top……..and then it continues……:

The British government has stated they will Defend the Falkland Islanders right to self determent there own future. I feel Argentina need to go down the long route, state they have done wrong and they are willing to change its approach to the Falkland Islands and its Islanders. play nice and keep to it and perhaps one day the islanders will start to see Argentina as a friend not a constant annoyance and a country who is objecting to there rights
in 1982 the British sent a task force 8000 miles to free part of our country from an unwanted occupation, That's how much self determination means to the British government, its people and the World as a whole. They could have left it but that wouldn't have been the right thing to do.

If Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner was in favour of “give peace a chance”, perhaps a covert team of RG land mine clearance engineers sent to the islands being filmed and presented to Argentine TV viewers would have been the only way to start mending the gaping wound Argentina has opened up in recent years. They might have earned a little respect for laying their lives on the line in order to make the lives of the Falkland community that bit more bearable knowing they can walk on land to which the Islanders have been denied for 30 years. The showing of an Athelete prancing up and down a war memorial is frankly disgusting and if the Athlete in question had any morals he would have known what he was doing (for dirty cash) was wrong, whether he knew who ultimately paid for his stunt or not. I think the Athlete should willingly donate his pay to a Falklands War Charity if he truly cares, along with those other Athletes which took part and the Film Crew and PR company which ever country they came from. The fact it ultimately came from Argentinian Government in my view only adds insult to injury.

Absolutely right Elaine and very well said. WW1 memorials are used around the country to honour the dead not just for that conflict but those that have followed. The laying of poppies at these Memorials is testament to their continuing significance in the life of the Country and the debt we owe to those that died.
A sad episode that reflects badly on those involved in this foolish stunt and those that support it.

I see the resident propagandist for the Malvinistas posted a photo to try and claim it wasn't a war memorial. Look again, the poppies are there because it is a war memorial.

However if you do want to particiapate you are not entitled to use it as an opportunity for propaganda. It's clearly stated in IOC rules.
So your options are to turn up and shut up - or don't turn up and make all the noise you like.

There are a few around Córdoba of some Argentine soldiers hoisting a flag (in a very victorious looking fashion, I must add), and I'm wondering if my restraint from jumping up and doing a few squat thrusts has been unnecessary.......
......Also, I'm struggling to see what the point of this little propaganda piece was.....why the need to keep constantly reminding yourselves of something, that you're so sure is indisputable, undebatable, anti-colonialist, anti-piratas fact?

You can see what has happened here. Maximo and chums - high on whatever it is that gives him the munchies - have a brainstorming session on how to please his Mama. They cook up an idea that would only seem clever in a sixth form common room and hire an advertising company to realise their idea. (Advertising companies are hired by clients and their job is to produce a product under the instruction of their client, to meet their client's wishes).

Elaine, let me tell you how I think things have worked. Arg contrating an ad company. Saying to promote Malvinas are arg. The company how much money? ok. we can do this or this idea. Arg chooses. Both Arg and the company has responsability for the ad. (yes the ad agency is responsible too, if they find the ad is disrespectful they could have said no, I dont do it). And the agency has an owner and it is very clear it is a Sir, english Sir. Y&R knows what is doing and the impact it can produce in Arg and in UK, they work on this. I would make another ad, not this.

The Argentine government hired the company in Buenos Aires, where they have offices, briefed the company on what it wanted and would have been involved every step of the way. The client instructs the agency, it has the right to approve the advertisement and, if necessary, cancel it if it did not exactly meet their instructions.

Of course, there is also the little matter of driving direction, and Canada (since that black day in 1922) has gone to the “right side” - a la Argentina. However, its interesting in that video, Zylberberg's run on a road is right smack on the middle line, neither left nor right - and the rest of his running is on sidewalks or cross-country.

Tonnes of toxic waste collected from Argentina municipal dumps is being sent illegally to Patagonia in flagrant breach of this country’s obligation to ensure its rapidly growing mountain of defunct televisions, computers and gadgets are disposed of safely.
Hundreds of thousands of discarded items, which under Argentina law must be dismantled or recycled by specialist contractors, are being packaged into cargo containers and shipped to provinces such as Chubut and Santa Cruz, where they are stripped of their raw metals by young men and children working on poisoned waste dumps.
In a joint investigation by The Independent, Sky News, and Greenpeace, Toxic waste was tracked that was shipped illegally. Under environmental protection laws the waste was classified as hazardous and should never have been shipped.
The toxic waste, fitted with a satellite tracking device, was bought by a Buenos Aires-based dealer, one of dozens of operators buying up a significant proportion of the estimated 940,000 tonnes of domestic electronic waste, or e-waste, produced in South America each year and sending it for disposal.
At least a third of the waste is transferred to dumps where waste pickers scavenge amid a cocktail of burning heavy metals and dioxins
A spokesman for Consumers International, which is campaigning for tightened e-waste controls, said: “The sight of Argentinean children scavenging toxic wastelands overflowing with the nation’s unwanted computers and televisions makes a mockery of international bans to prevent the dumping of e-waste. Argentina has shown little desire to deal with the root cause of this problem.”

Since the beginning of January, Falklands Wildlife Trust's Marine Strandings Network has examined and recorded 50 dead dolphins and porpoises. Just under half, 23, showed distinct signs of having died in fishing gear.
A common dolphin, examined on the beach at in early April, one of five discovered in the same week, showed scars typical of a large trawler net from which it presumably tried to escape. A spokesman for South Atlantic Wildlife Trust said: 'A large fillet of flesh had been removed from the back - presumably for eating. 'This is a known practice on Argentine boats and Argentine pair trawlers were working close to the Islands waters at the time. 'The dolphin's tail had been cut off in the course of cutting the animal free from a winch strop which was used to lift it over the side of the boat

This in fact is not a local advertisement. Silly if the company thought it was so. In a global society, and for the subject it treats, nobody can think so. They should refer back to its main land company, it matters them indirectly.

Now, CFK chooses to exploit the 30th anniversary of that terrible invasion to relaunch her initiatives. Such poor timing!!
Why not just have a respectful commemoration of the dead this year, wait a year and then seek to get trust of Falkland Islanders and of Britain and get back to a pre-1982 approach? Forget this school-boy one-up-manship that CFK seems to crave now. That video is an embarrassment that just seems to typify the whole Argie approach. Just gets hackles up and won't be so productive (and certainly not justified) as a calm, careful, respectful approach. Its like CFK is only seeking short-term political brownie-points and doesn't really care that even Maximo's grand children will be no closer to grabbing the Falklands.

As a thought experiment: imagine how shocking it would be for foreign government to make a video of one of their athletes training for an event to be held in the USA, showing that athlete doing step ups or otherwise jumping around on a memorial for the fallen in the National Mall, using the video to try to make a cheap political point against the USA, and then releasing the video during the anniversary of a war of aggression that foreign nation had launched against the USA.
It doesn't matter what you think of the rights and wrongs of any diplomatic dispute between the UK and Argentina, for the Argentine administration to try to score points by releasing a video of an Argentine athlete training for London 2012 doing step-ups on the British war memorial in Port Stanley during the 30th anniversary of the Falklands Conflict is at best utterly incompetent, at worst a deliberate attempt to insult
This Argentine athlete abused the Islanders' hospitality, pranced about on the war memorial, and politicized an international sporting event to make a propaganda film claiming ownership over his neighbors, who not that long ago were victims of Argentine aggression.

The facts regarding the Falkland Islands are:
During the 1600-1800 period the Falkland Islands changed hands many times between Britain, Spain and France until France gave up and Spain and Britain signed a truce. When Spain was thrown out of South America from various wars of independence, Britain was left with the last standing legal claim. However, the early Argentine Republic decided it wanted the Falkland Islands but instead of claiming it, it attempted to subdue the private/penal colony of one Loius Vernet who had already gone to the British for permission to be there and he had recognised the British ownership of tyhe Islands. Later realizing that Vernet was in league with the Argentinians the British sent a ship to take direct control of the settlement and eject the garrison but allowed the settlers to stay on. While this irritated Argentina, by 1850 Argentina had forgotten about the Islands and legally dropped its claim in a treaty with the UK.
It was only as late as the 1950's that Peron distorted historical facts with rhetoric and propoganda.
Another Argentine not understanding that the advert was made by a subsidiary of a British company. The New York head office of the subsidiary has made the Buenos Aires office issue a full and unreserved apology.

The annual Argentinean baby seal hunt is again scheduled for November. Although little known, the the target is the infant of the species. For six to eight weeks each spring, the ice floes of the South Atlantic waters turn bloody, as some 300,000 harp seal pups, virtually all between 2 and 12 weeks old, are beaten to death—their skulls crushed with a heavy club called a hakapik—or shot. They are then skinned on the ice or in nearby hunting vessels after being dragged to the ships with boat hooks. The skinned carcasses are usually left on the ice or tossed in the ocean.
Thousands of other wounded pups (estimates range from 15,000 to 150,000 per year) manage to escape the hunters but die later of their injuries or drown after falling off the ice (pups younger than about 5 weeks cannot swim). The seals are hunted chiefly for their pelts, which are exported to China, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Turkey, Russia, and other countries, where they are used to make expensive designer-label coats and accessories. Among the major vendors of these products are the Italian fashion-wear companies Gucci, Prada, and Versace.
The Argentinean seal hunt has provoked worldwide outrage and intense protest by animal-rights, environmental, and scientific groups, by national governments, and by some international governmental institutions, such as the European Union, all of which have objected that it is viciously cruel and, in its typical size, a serious threat to the long-term survival of the harp seal species. On May 3, 2012, the SBS TV program called “TV Animal Farm” exposed the horrific reality of dog fighting in Argentina.
The program showed an entrenched dog fighting culture in which people watching dog fighting as a form of national entertainment.
In the dog fights, dogs are not necessarily forced to kill each other. The fighting ends when there is a clear winner. But ultimately, it is still a fight to the death because the losers of dog fights very quickly end up as lasagna meat at Italian restaurants in Buenos Aries.
Dogs that survive fights can sustain serious injuries and are only treated with an antibiotics injection. They do not get proper veterinarian care.
For the training, dogs are forced to run on running machines without a break. Their necks are tied to the machines, preventing any escape and forcing them to run.
Argentinean police ignore the problem, since it appears that there are connections between the police and people in dog-fighting industry. Typically, it is an industry involving gambling and government corruption.

The classified doctor’s report includes several extensive details about his health. Panagopulos said it quotes Kirchner doctor Theodore Morrell confirming that Nestor and Cristina had sex though they slept in separate beds and that he was injected with semen from young bulls to spark his libido. Under the section “Sex Characteristics,” the classified report said:
Panagopulos said the report also notes that Nestor “suffered from uncontrollable flatulence” due to his veggie diet, something the Argentine leader took pills for.

But then they changed their mind and invaded the Falklands. Today the war is romanticized by a nation ruled by a kind of cross between a Neo-Nazi uber nationalist and a Charvesta Revolutionary uber Marxist. The only thing missing is the land reform. Maybe that's for later? But as few natives remain, maybe they'll just ignore their rights... God knows they always have. An entire culture replaced by a European one. Entire languages destroyed.

Have no real connection to each other, not least that one event is long over and the other is still in play.
However in this case the logic does remain the same:
Colonial or mainland Spanish = Spanish
British democratic dependency (former colony) or mainland British = British
The difference was Argentina chose to break away from its mother country and de-colonised itself.
The Islanders chose to remain a part of the mother country and de-colonised to become a democratic dependency.
The histories evolved differently, that is all. This does not give Argentina any rights to claim the Islands.
