Forget TV, computers, WWW, the steam engine etc - is the greatest thing Britain gave to the world the Sandwich? Gets my vote.

You bet it is!!! But only as long as it's egg and bacon. The bacon has got to be crispy and the egg yolk has got to be runny. Otherwise it's just not a Sandwich. But it probably is the greatest invention of all time.

Getting away from the snack theme and into the geo-political aspect of Sandwich, wiki informs that Britain claimed sovereignty over South Georgia in 1775 and the South Sandwich Islands in 1908. In 1908 the United Kingdom annexed both South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. The territory of “South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands” was formed in 1985; previously it had been governed as part of the Falkland Islands Dependencies. Argentina claimed South Georgia in 1927 and claimed the South Sandwich Islands in 1938.

Similar to the contribution of the cruise ship industry in the Falklands, SGSSI seems to be getting some cruise ship business as well:

I'm sure that the Earl had the South Sandwich Islands on his mind when he munched away at the card table...
