I have to feel sorry for those 700 argentine workers (well except the ones that voted CFK) because i hate to see anyone being made redundant. Especially when those redundancies are forced on a company not because of poor business decisions or business finances, but solely because of an incompetent government, that clearly sort they could restrict imports and not expect other countries to retaliate. I wonder what those workers now facing redundancy think of CFK and her policies! I bet they do not think highly of her.

This is just the start of things to come too, because clearly if argentina continue to leave their trade restrictions in place, their neighbours will simply expand on their own restrictions on imported argentine goods which will effect even more industrial sectors and not just the potatoe and chips.

As I said before, Brazil were right to choose perishable goods to target. Instant problems are the only problems CFKC deals with, she has no ability to plan or think long-term.

It looks as if the factory owners are trying to delay the redundancies by setting the workers to cleaning tasks but it cannot last long.

I wonder what solution will be found. Does CFK have a history of backtracking or losing face? I can see this turning into a tit for tat until it all goes wrong and she is booted out of office.

Rgs are very good at backtracking. They invest crisis then when it doesn't materialize or people laugh at their ridiculousness they backtrack. Think of the lead in printed books. That policy lasted a day before it was overturned.

As factories start idling workers and unemployment creeps up they will have to re-think the import ban.
They are in a very tough position, they know the economy is failing and have no idea how to fix it.

The only short term way to get a boost is massive devaluation then try to hold back the hyper inflation when it starts.

Devaluation in imminent you can see it in the black market U$ purchases it is $5.70 today. Shortly it will be $6/1 but once the general population starts to panic who knows where it may end up.

This is an example of the fairy tale Argentine government who claim worldwide support for their claims on the Falkland Islands and claim South America is united. This is just another example of the reality that the South American countries hate each other's guts. Apart from Argentine workers loosing their jobs through KFCs incompetence which is regrettable, the Falkland Islanders must be laughing at the continual blunders made by a laughable government.

Like the love for the Brits in Europe? (ask France, Germany and Spain).

I guess you still have the Italians, maybe.

I always laugh when Europeans talk about how South Americans hate each other... typing such crap when they are probably eating through their veggies the 70 million yead the last 100 years of European history has brought.

But as the saying goes “In Europe we show love in the trenches”...

I always knew that saying may hold a double meaning. Sinister.

    yankeeboy,

It was uninformed argentine outrage at the book restrictions that lead CFK to “backtrack”. It certainly wans't the mighty USA.

Sad part is argies are now exposed to those poison-laden US and European books. I bought the Little Prince in French some time ago and I am not making this up, on one of the pages I realized I was running the ink!! Literally, I lifted my finger and there were smudges of black ink where it had rested.

Surely upon a lead content test, I will come back as positive. Your books are lead inked, fact.

Putting lead ink conspiracies and CFK antics to one side, you are wrong on this.
South Americans don’t all hate each other. There are conflicts yes, like there have always been in Europe too. In fact the armed conflicts in Europe have generally been worse. Today Europe is more integrated than SAmerica on every level, but this might not always be the case.

SAmerica has far greater potential to truly integrate than Europe. With the exception of Brazil we have a common language and history, and even Brazil is not so different. In Europe you will always be divided by language, culture and history and when times are tough ruptures will always appear along these fault lines.

#5 Elaine please stop turning every political issue into a psychoanalysis of Cristina. Anyway all successful political leaders have to react to immediate issues, those movements which focus exclusively on the bigger picture turn into sects. And she and Nestor have over the last 5 years, while dealing with every crisis as it has come up, built up an alternative model, even if one you as a cutthroat neoliberal don't like =) As there is now a Yoda on this board, I'll leave you with salient advice from Star Wars Episode 1. It is easy for countries to murmer a few words of support regarding The Falklands for their anti-social neighbours Argentina. It costs them nothing and they will never have to act on their words. If you lived next to a nation of excitable people run by a mentally unstable woman, you would probably use some soothing words to keep the peace. However, if the ASBO neighbours started to cost you money and affect your income, you would act.

But ASBO neighbours in council housing soon bring more of the trash into the area as good people, fearful for their families, move out.

If you are as strong as Brasil it is far better to beat the crap out of the first ASBO family to arrive.

Being essentially cowards and without support they have only two choices left open to them: behave or leave.

In my EXPERIENCE this works fine.

@15 You have a very poor attitude. Why would anyone ask the French, German, Spanish or Italians about Britain? All countries Britain has beaten when they forgot their place. France - ever since Philip II. Germany - not too bad until Kaiser Wilhelm. Spain - pretty much no-hopers since the Eighty Years' War (1566-1648). Italy - War of the Third Coalition (1803-1805). Why not try the Netherlands, Portugal or Greece?
@26 Are you kidding? You're referring to “the only problems CFKC deals with, she has no ability to plan or think long-term.” as psychoanalysis? Which zoo bred you? Or was it an alien biological warfare laboratory? How nice that CFK and her dead old man has dealt with every crisis. Whilst creating more! 30% inflation. Lack of energy resources in production. Lack of money now she's spent the pension funds. Lack of imports now it's too expensive and too restrictive. Lack of exports now it's too expensive and too restrictive. Just as a matter of interest - when considering how much money is going to be needed to get YPF operating again, where's she going to steal the money for that?
@36 What a sad git you are! A “trade spat” is your description of country B refusing automatic import licences for perishable goods from country A? As a response to country A keeping country B's goods stuck in import controls for weeks or months? By the time the importers in country A finally get the “goods” they'll be able pour them out of the containers. Keep it up, argieland, you have the brains of a Trolling TiT. Oh, excuse me. “Only people that feel dumb feel the need to tell others they are dumb.” On the other hand, dumb things need to be told that they're dumb in an attempt to get them to stop wasting the time of intelligent people. T_T_T is obviously a TiTiT. And has a deep and enduring need for a pre-frontal lobotomy. A simple piece of surgery not requiring anasthesia as bone can't feel. And TiTiT is obviously a bonehead.

Just because I don't understand String theory fully (or mostly), does not mean it is rubbish.

The chew gum and walk applies to this case because in the first 30 responses the brits were naively gloating about how trade spats in South America prove the countries hate each other, will go to war and kill themselves off.

That maybe be the track record in the UK and Europe as 2000 years of history prove beyond any shred of doubt, but not everyone in the world is so short fused.

If a couple fights over which movie to watch, it does not mean the relationship is doomed. I guess in the UK and Europe it does... no wonder you guys write so many “self-help” books, specially on relationships (does my comment on the divorce rate... it seems in your society disagreeing about one thing with another means you must automatically disagree with everything).

    Now I see.

I have provided String theory as an example of something that is complex and difficult to understand.

I have also implied that Europeans are simple minded by my reference to “can’t chew gum and walk”.

The glaring inconsistency in my argument is that string theory was conceived by Europeans and its greatest proponent today is Steven Hawkins, thereby nullifying my own argument that Europeans are simple minded.

If I were challenged on this point I would make the weak case that Juan Maldacena (a significant contributor to string theory) was Argentine, but I know I would be clutching at straws and all his important work was done in the US anyway and now he has take US nationality.

In the spirit of debate I will fall upon my own sword.

As for the Financial tax in europe, the UK was against it as the financial system in the UK amounts to 75% of the EU financial market, therefore it would have been damaging to our economy and financial markets, germany and france were simply trying to avoid having to pay their fair share and tried use the UK's financial markets as a tool for paying the eurozone debts off. Now as we the UK are not in the Eurozone, why the hell should we pay off the Eurozone debts when france and germany can be bothered to unzip their purse strings to pay towards the Eurozone debt themselves, expecially when it would have a long term and lasting damaging effect on the UK economy and financial market and would everntually have led to all financial transaction in the EU, whether its was bank transaction for paying for groceries having that finanical tax applied on top of VAT - It was a stealth tax thought up by germany and france to rob us brits in order so they could pay their own debts and then expand the tax to all other financial transaction to make them even more money, for their precious EU and Eurozone, at the UK's expense. It would have weekend the UK and we knew that so we vetoed it. Its obivious to most brits Germany simply what to be rulers of europe, something they failed to do in WW2.

Yes I'm British and no I don't think that would be necessary; Elaine is probably right I won't meet her, and certainly not in that way, I was just poking fun at her certainty

    Bad news for the English.

You all know that the despicable Scott wants to remain in the Union and I have always made the point ONLY because he would lose the English subsidies.

Seems that 57% of the rest of the Scottish hangers on agree with me:
“An opinion poll published by Alistair Darling, the former Chancellor, showed only 33 per cent of voters in Scotland want independence and 57 per cent are opposed.” Daily Telegraph.

WHAT we really need is a referendum in ENGLAND about getting shut of these parasites.

Clever Scots =) But the idea its only for benefits is laughable, in fact one of my main objections to the SNP is their selfish policy of “its Scotland's oil” which the British are now encouraging the Falkland Islanders to emulate!

    Good point on the oil.
You know that I have said on a couple of occasions that your views on SAmerica are distorted by never having lived here, well that is certainly true, but you are on home turf now.
