And there, ladies and gentlemen, is the surest sign of a country teetering on the brink of a financial abyss that will even make Argentina's previous economic difficulties look like a pleasant walk in the park.

Give it another few years and Argentina will be begging to become a part of the booming Falklands .. and they will of course, quite rightly, be told to “jog on” :)

Lol just had to laugh reading this article after malvinabates comments on the UK recession article, about the UK being finished.

@1 i think it will be much sooner then in a few years, probably in the next 12 months. You only have to look at their decreased growth this year compared to the same periods last year to see the bubble has popped and is leaking air rapidly.

This article just proves they are getting even more desperate to keep money in the country, which means they haven't enough money to support their economy.

The decreased the soy crop estimate again yesterday, the gov't is running a huge deficit, the provinces are out of $ and the banks are bleeding deposits.

Devalue and PRINT PRINT PRINT is the only solution.

The effects will be short lived just before hyper inflation sets in...

The majority of CFKC voters are poor and/or under-educated. They will not be bothered by not being able to get dollars for savings or travel because they are impossible dreams for them. They will start to take notice as inflation continues to rise, supplies dry up because they are held up at customs and they lose their jobs (if they were working). Inflation affects everyone.

What needs to happen is a viable opposition and for the 1/3 of eligible voters who did not bother voting in the last election to be motivated to vote to get the K's out. I think that could happen.

Old Plastic's Government will do what they always do, jump up and down, shout the M-word a bit, burn the British Flag, by which time her people in true 'goldfish in a bowl' fashion will have forgotten that she has stuffed them stupid, and doomed them to poverty and starvation. we may have a few issues in the UK, but atleast we are adressing it sensibly, hence we still have 'AAA' Credit Rating, whats Argentina's 'ZZZ'

Layoffs are coming, union thugs are asking for 30% raise AND BONUS, shelves are increasingly under-stocked and barren of some items, medications are scarce, gov't coffers are running dry and massive black outs will hit BA this winter with every cold snap.
It is all coming to a head and not something CFK can mentally handle and she will get more and more erratic.
They just need 1 person killed in a riot and she'll be gone

@12 I think she is already planting the seeds for leaving on 'health' grounds. Mentioning her 'great personal sacrifice' and taking a lot of time off is the start of her exit. It is probably a good move because she clearly will not cope under the pressure of the next six months.

Mind you, you can sort of understand why. Have you noticed how it is never a problem getting a flight into Buenos Aires - any airline, any class of ticket - but spare capacity departing from Buenos Aires is rarer than hens' teeth? Such a dramatic contrast in capacity between arriving and departing flights speaks volumes about the near panic-stricken exodus of the few Argentine nationals who can still afford international travel.

What desperately few portable assets haven't yet been stripped by CFK's corrupt government are being taken out of the country by those who still have the means to do it.

“Wonder if she and her undoubtedly modest entourage will get permission to fly to NY for the C24 ??”

I think the C24 is a smoke screen. She's using the C24 as an excuse to flee Argentina before the angry mob arrives at her door demaning her head on a platter.

Once out of Argentina she'll be free to count her millions, whilst lying on some beach, sniggering into her tequilla.

The noose is tightening. The Peronists will not be satisfied until they have stolen it all. What is amazing is that the people of Argentina keep voting for this stuff. What is even more amazing is that the parallels between Peron and Obama are eerie and that Americans voted him into power.

Apart from the despotic nature of this new law a further problem is that it will be unenforceable against those with significant amounts they want to transfer. There's always a way.

Indeed. The majority of her voters, and of the people. They are more worried about keeping or getting work and for that Cristina's pro-growth, no austerity policies are the best on offer. Whats your solution???

#13 “I think she is already planting the seeds for leaving on 'health' grounds”

#18 “the parallels between Peron and Obama are eerie”

It seems you are correct. Take a look at BsAs Herald:

“Handing over power is unavoidable. Those who believe in eternity, please pray the rosary at night and realize how fragile we are,“ the Head of State said in a televised speech, as she addressed Kirchnerite supporters and added that “others” will have to run the country after her term ends in 2015.

    We hope!

    @32 - Zulu99.

CFK's pro-growth policy refers to her numerous off-shore bank accounts. Apparently they have been growing nicely since her rise to power, and continue to grow exponentially. As Argentina gets poorer, CFK gets richer.

“The form demands travellers to detail information on the country/countries of destination, dates of the trip, motives and even if the payment was cash or in instalments.” This may be an infringment on the constitution and on privacy laws; there are also questions about one´s educational level, what countries does the flight go to before it reaches your final destination, etc.

Sorry, but this is an English-language forum and gibberish (even your fluent variety) isn't allowed.

    “faulty math !.....69,18 ?”

Not so much faulty as just plain pig-ignorant (like you). If you are writing in English, it should be written as “69.18”. Even primary school children know that in science, and in ALL English-speaking countries, the comma is used to separate sequences of three digits (i.e. a a thousands separator), whilst either a full stop, or even a mid dot, is used to indicate the decimal mark. Do be a good chap and get yourself an education.

#33 She's right of course philosophically speaking, but there's of course a difference between eternity and a little longer than 2015, and I hope the people will persuade her to put aside false modesty and continue her strong and courageous leadership a little longer. Of course there are good others to take over if she does not stay, Timmerman and Alicia come to mind, but I and many around the world I'm sure will always remember her especially fondly even after she eventually goes. God willing your political team are beat for good in LatAm Chris =)

British_Kirchnerist is a troll. Nobody but a troll or possibly a lunatic could endorse Héctor Timerman or Alicia Castro for President of Argentina.

The very thought of this happening is enough to scare the sh*t out of me.

Let's hope that the Kretina is sincere about not altering the Constitution, and that someone honest, like Julio Cobos will present himself as an alternative to the Kirchneris horrors and the ghastly peronists.

Well I must admit it was a slight windup given the mood of this particular board. However....I do actually think the two of them would each be a strong candidate. And the other could maybe be VP =) But I still think Cristina should “go on and on”, as another woman leader once said....

I don't know that this in itself is a big deal. Aside from the financial aspect, these are questions you are asked at most border crossings by customs agents

@33 Mentioning 'praying' and 'fragile' are clear indicators she is going to quit on health grounds. Remember she did not want to run last time stating that she was 'not dying to be President'. Even her children were against it which clearly suggests she is mentally (and possibly physically) not up to the job. How many times does she cancel meetings and disappear back to her home for days on end?

I suspect she was talked into running by the power hungry people around her as the best candidate given her widow-woman advantage. They did not have an alternative candidate ready.

She should have gone after one term and then she could have remained popular with her poor and under-educated, and blamed the looming disasters on her successor. Sadly for her, that ego got in the way.

#42 Well said Guzz, Elaine's pop-pshychology is really an embarrasment to herself. The analysis she gives above is so obviously based on rumour, hearsay and distortion, mixed in with bitter personal hate of her “subject”, its hard to take seriously. I really don't think she's going to quit, obviously she's been bruised by the bruising battle over nationalisation but I trust she will, as after the bruising battles this time in her last term over farming, emerge stronger. If closer to 2015 there is a serious clamour for her to remain at the helm, as I believe there will be if she continues the deepening of the leftist model, then the issue of the constitution can be reopened. Regarding why she stood last time, despite the sacrifice her children thought it was (and wouldn't Elaine at other times call them “power hungry people around her”, yet here she says they were counterposed!) she was clearly the best candidate to continue and deepen the popular national project - and still is
