By Danny Byrne, Editor of TopUniversities.com - Universities throughout Latin America are in a period of transition. Though precise circumstances vary by country, factors such as the growth in scientific research, massification of social demand for higher education, increased student mobility and the rise of private universities have exerted an influence across the region. Brasil represents 35% of the whole population of Latinamerica, but only 25% of the best 250 univiersities are Brazilian. So not so sure this is a big achievement or big deal, as the author of this article tries to point out. They are clearly underperfoming, even for regional standards. Colombia, Argentina, Chile and even Mexico have a better ratio.
He mentions that 3 Brazilian Universities are ranked within the TOP 10, but drops the fact that 4 from tiny Chile are within same TOP 10.

Isn't it rather an achievement, that a country that barely represents 2,9% of the whole latinamerican population has 4 of the 10 best, and being 4th ranked with 30 Universities in whole LA? Brasil has 12 times the population of Chile, but “only” doubles their amount of universities within this ranking. Way to go to present themselves as THE University Powerhouse.

It is remarkable that the article fails to comment on Chiles exceptional performance in this ranking:

2 Chilean universities in the top 5 (same as Brazil)
4 Chilean universities in the top 10 (more than Brazil)

Considering that Chile has less than 10% of the population of Brazil really puts this achievement in to proportion.

@1 & 2 Exactly what I was thinking. How exactly does this put Brazil in a positive light?

2 Chileans in the top 5, and 2 Chileans in the top 10.
Dick head Condomrito, chilean with a big nose, needs glasses. Manclown is insecured...as I typed here many times. Best time he showed that off was when Chileans was not in the list of the “coolest nationality of the world”..lolz.

How exactly does this put Brazil in a positive light?
Very simple Hammerhead. The Brazilians do what they suppose to do. Chileans only talk tough, but have the worst educatation system in Latin America. Even a country like Argentina beats them. Chilean economy? Its not even half of the GDP of the State of Sao Paulo. As you can read at the comments of 1 and 2, they try hard to spin there own theory, but reality drives them nuts.

Nothing like a guy from the Netherlands who lives in the U.S. trying to educate us on South America. All I can say is lame response. Very lame. Next...

It's lame for you because those facts I typed don't fit in your brain dead (hammer)head. Your mother is lame..

It's lame, first because Fido has a poor skill for comprehension and presented the outdated results from last year, which even prove Chile has further improved and added 2 more universities int he TOP 10 in 2012 (and believe me, Fido really suffers this ! Whatever the reasons might be...).

And second, because he doesn't really comprehend the high ambition of the Chilean students. Media has flooded us all with the chilean student movement claiming for better education and sending the subliminal message it would supposedly be bad. That's a wrong conlcusion. They do not protest to be better than regional standards. No mister... They do this, because their aims are WAY higher than this.

Third, the “explaination” that Sao Paulo has a bigger GDP than Chile again shows how limited Fido is in his analytic skills. Sao Paulo state has a population of 42 million, while Chile has only 17 Million. It's not about the accumulated mass, it's about quality for every individual. That's what makes the point.

    Well said Manrod and Hammer.
Ahhh. Fido Dildo is all upset because he doesn't like Chile doing well.
This ranking, i.e the one the article is about puts 4 Chilean universities in the top 10.

Even if there were only 2 Chilean universities in the top 10 it would still be a well above average performance for the region.

Yes, Chile has problems in education and they are now the country's number 1 priority, that is why we go forward.
