I'd genuinely be interested to see if a oil deal is struck.

If not then Argentina must be seen as a rouge state given China and Russia are rather famous for raping countries for resources and getting deals that are severely in their favour hence the western worlds reluctance to enter these types of deals with them even if trade is high.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out and purely as devils advocate surely Argentina would be better to seek investment from SA if it doesn't want to work with western companies or they don't want to work with it. Although I guess only the largest countries/companies can put up in excess of 35bn.

When China invests in oil it is so they can get the oil...why should they invest in oil production for RG home consumption?

FOGL have announced that Italian oil company Edison is the unnamed partner in Falklands Oil Investment.

    http://falklandsnews.wordpress.com/

This is what happens when you have a law abiding democratic government - countries and companies want to invest. Argentina should take note......but they won't.

Hey, China have loaned Argentina money. I'll bet they won't see a return on that. On the other hand, I wonder what Argentina promised to give China as security on the loan?

However, the talk of nuclear energy intrests me. Has Cristina 'lets keep South America nuclear free' Kirchner changed her mind now that oil and gas production is so unpredictible?

As the Chinese say: we live in interesting times.

Well as long as its disastrous, who cares about the little details! Anyway a lovely picture of Cristina, thanks mercopress - I wish she was more powerful than the Chinese but we have to live in the real world and thats what she's doing with this deal =)

Seems very odd that they would get a loan from the Chinese for road maintenance etc. Usually the Chinese “loan” $ to buy their goods. It speaks to the inability of Arg to find any U$ anywhere else. Venezuela, China, who are they going to borrow from next Iran?

@13 And so we see the next steps in the creation of the People's Republic of
Ch(argent)ina. Wonder how many Chinese engineers, technicians etc they'll ship in. It will make it soooo much easier when argieland defaults and the Chinese start wandering around saying, “We'll take that....and that....and that. Never mind. We'll take it all and let you know what we'll allow you to use.”

The Chinese are very smart with the foreign investments they make. When they loan money directly to countries like Argentina that want to avoid “the markets” or the development banks, they usually tie it to a specific infrastructure, or service or commodity that involves chineses companies completing the work sometimes with imported chinese labor.

It will be interesting to see what countries/companies invest in YPF. Like other ocountries have found out its very difficult to “balance trade” once a major trade partner has a huge trade surplus with you.

    Great comments as usual!

This is a great page exactly for the comments. The articles are just the pretext.

But, I can't believe you guys missed this knee-slapper!

“Argentina signed with China a raft of mostly farm-related agreements at a ceremony on Monday in Buenos Aires attended by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and his Argentine president Cristina Fernandez.”

    Hahahaha!

I don't think it was deliberate. - just bad English and even worse editing.

But what a clunker! What a telling clunker.

Yes, she and Argentina itself, is already somebody's b*tch.

I spent 10 years in Argentina and have been saying this for years.
    Here's the breakdown.

Argentina has lots of what the world needs. Soya, Copper, Water, Location*, and, lots and lots of Empty Space (ya know, Land!).

They also have lots of corrupt politicians willing to sell their soul to even the lowest bidder, an equally corrupt and clueless body politic, and no military to defend either one.

Then, you have China, India, Russia, Western Europe, and North America.
Al of whom need what Argentina has......

Let me ask the Argentinian readers here a qusetion.

Who do you think is gong to win?

(Sung to the melody of Quint's Song http://youtu.be/GVmeeYwEiQw)
“Farewell and adieu to you dear Argentinians. Farewell and adieu to you Argies in pain! For they all have designs to take over your country. And never more will we see you again.”

I think the Arabs will destroy your “civilizations” (it hurt to use that word to describe European, American, Chinese/Asian people) from within well before your dreams of Argieland domination are even fathomed in the real circles of power.

You very well know your days as western decadent nations are numbered. Within 30-40 years the muslims will have brought the end of you, and most likely of your lineage (all dead).

London will just be another Damascus.

For once I have to agree with half of what BK says.
    This is good for Arg.

The Chinese will up their food imports, hence giving the Argentina the chance to narrow the deficit.

China will also be investing in the RG rail network – more dollars coming in, better infrastructure.

Many seem to forget that China has big problems of its own. They don’t come here (SAmerica) to dictate terms. They need to negotiate these kinds of deals on food to keep their own inflation under control. It is a bilateral win-win.

I wouldn’t be surprised if China invested in YPF or went in to some kind of a venture. China is expert at dealing in “risky” environs, just look at their massive investments in Africa.

I know that TTT won’t like the idea of Chinese investment but you can’t please everyone.

@45 News about an hour ago. A unit of France’s state-controlled power company bought a stake in exploration wells planned by Falkland Oil & Gas Ltd. (FOGL), undeterred by Argentina’s claim to sovereignty over the South Atlantic islands.

Edison International (EIX) (EIX) SpA , a unit of EDF, will receive a 25 percent interest in Falkland Oil’s northern licenses and a 12.5 percent interest in southern licenses off the archipelago that Margaret Thatcher went to war to keep British in 1982. Edison will pay drilling costs of about $50 million and make a separate cash payment of $40 million, Falkland Oil said today in a statement. Falkland Oil raised 48.5 million pounds ($76 million) in January and is fully funded for the two wells it plans this year targeting more than 4 billion barrels of reserves. The deal with Edison frees up about $100 million for future investments, Bushell said. SO EAT SHIT AND DO ONE

The deal sees French utility firm EDF enter the Falklands.

Via Edison International – a company in which it owns a controlling stake – EDF will pay FOGL’s back-costs in the region of US$50 million and it will pay its own share of the costs for the upcoming drill programme. A US$3 million option fee had already been paid to FOGL.

Also Edison will pay FOGL an additional US$40 million in cash – with US$20 million being paid on completion of the farm-out and US$20 million due next year.

If EDf made a loss of 871 million euros in 2011 how come Google says this. EDF Energy's profits trebled in 2011, figures revealed today.

The French utility firm reported a total income after tax of €3.01 billion (£2.5 billion), compared to €1.02 billion (£0.8 billion) in 2010.
So obviously your lazy and can't be bothered to do your homework or your internet is controlled by CFK and she only allows you to see what she wants.

It's completely irrelevant what THINK is on about yet again with spurious suggestions of the future.

Argentine posters claim this, that and the other, yet it is still the UK as ever in full control of the situation and with nothing looking like it will ever change, yet our little cute, angry and vitriolic Argentine friends as they have been doing for the last 100 years or so claim otherwise and claim they are winning.

Meanwhile back in reality zero changes, the people of the Falkland Islands go about their lives and Argentine continues with its futile and ridiculous arguments and petty behavior, just business as usual I guess.

Do you think these riots will spill over to BA tomorrow?

As many China enthusiasts are so keen to point out China is the 'new-super power' on the block. But hang about CFK and her mates Chavez and Amadine(jihad) hate super powers?

Why is this chinoiserie so different - are they not an empire, do they not aspire to supplant the USA? Do they not oppress Tibet? Are they not militarizing the South China Sea with their aircraft carrier?

CFK must have left her 'principles' at the clinic poor dear.

I am argentine. I think China is the second economy of the world and they grow so fast because of their tradings. I don't believe CFK is doing well as a president, but is doing better than Obama, who is destroying USA inflating the economy and generating a globe which is going to explote possibly next year. You are watching and economy ilussion right now, the problem wasn't solved, so the problem will be incremented. I guess Romney will make a much better job than Obama (not the best).

    About Falkland Islands:
If I was the president of Argentina, I beg for military help to Venezuela, Perú and Brazil and I get back the islands.

    Land:
Yeah. We need population. Sadly, we are getting the worst population ever. We were europeans in South America, and now we are transforming in Latin Americans. We must stop that.

You sound like a coward. Letting someone do they fighting for you. Pathetic.

Your Dear Leader has already tried begging Brazil, Chile, Venezula and Peru to help her, and it's got her nowhere, just humiliated Argentina on the world stage.

Why should they send their young men to war against the British? Just what is in it for them? If they ever did, and you did somehow invade the Falklands, why should the countries you have mentioned give them to Argentina? After all they would've been the ones to sacrifice their people for them, so they should get the spoils.

None of the countries you mention would risk what amounts to an all out attack on a NATO member. Remember that the UK could invoke article 5 of the NATO charter, and the other members would come to our assistance, as they would see this 'hypothetical' union of South American nations attacking one of their members as unfair and dashed unsporting.

If Argentina wants the islands then man up and try to take them from the British, one country against another. Don't be cowards and hide behind Brazil, Peru and Venezula.

But don't expect a happy ending, just expect even more humiliation like you suffered in 1982.

Next year the legal owners of the Faklands will hold a referendum under the auspices of the UN. Once that result is known, they should then lobby the UN to remove them from the decolonisation list, as they will have met one of the options listed by the UN.

Argentina will then be told by the international community to STFU, and stop trying to steal land that doesn't belong to you. I also foresee that in the not too distant future, the Falkland Islands will become completely independent, and become the newest member of the UN.

And all Argentina can do against international law is stand by impotently and cry.

Here's a hint for Argentina. Stop looking at the past, look to the future, maybe then, one day, the world will start taking you seriously.

The Islands are southamericans, not British. That's the reason why we beg for help to southamerican countries. We are not prepared for a war right now.
The islands are British because you stole them many years ago, and obviously now the habitants are British.

The Falkland Islands are NOT South American, they are in the Western South ATLANTIC.
They are British not because the British took them in 1833, but because the people that live on them VOTED to be British.
There are a large majority of voters who wish to be British because we, during the 150 years of unimpeded immigration to the Islands DID NOT GO THERE.
We lost our opportunity to rig the vote. In other words we f**ked up again as we usually do.
We cannot blame the Brits, the Yanks, the French or anybody else, it is all our own fault, and we have to live with it.

    @83

You seem to like being humiliated on the world stage with all that begging. No wonder no one takes your country seriously.

But as I stated before, what's in it for Brazil? What would they gain by pissing off the British, the EU, the UN and the Commonwealth? For what? So Argentina can steal land from people who have lived on the islands for the past 180+ years? Longer than Argentina existed? Since before Argentina annexed Patagonia?

Just what rights do you think you have that can over-rule article 1 of the UN charter?

Argentina shall never gain the Falkland Islands. They will either remain a British Overseas Territory or become completely independent. Argentina burnt all it's bridges when you invaded in 1982, terrorised the population, showed complete disregard for human life by randomly scattering land mines and not marking their position (which is against international law), and when you finally realised you were losing the war your brave soldiers booby-trapped the school desks with explosives.

And don't say it was the 'Junta' because we all remember the cheering crowds in the Plaza de Mayo on 02 April 1982. We also remember the crowds in the Plaza de Mayo on and after the 14 June 1982, calling your soldiers cowards and demanding that they return and fight to the death.

Why should the Islanders ever have ANYTHING to do with a country that has done that to them, and refuses to acknowledge that what it did was wrong?

Argentina can keep on crying and BEGGING but no one if any import is listening to you. But don't worry you still have your friends: Angola, Syria, Iran, Venezula, China; those paragons of human rights and virtues.

    @86 -

    Same old, same old.

The Iraqis have no problem with the British and Americans booting out the murderous regime. They now have democracy, despite some terrorist groups trying to disrupt things.

If the Iraqis have a problem they can always take it to the ICJ.

The Chagossians? An implanted worker population who couldn't survive once the plantations left as there is no naturally occurring water on the islands. They would have all eventually had to leave or die.

However, the British transplanted them and gave them compensation.

Now, let's see: Argentinians massacred native south Americans, committing genocide and ethnic cleansing, and gave these Amerindians what? Oh that's right, nothing.

The Argentine military 'disappeared' 30,000 of its on people, which some Argentinians are still fighting to get to the truth and bring those responsible to justice.

And now your hanging out with the likes of Syria (currently massacring it's own people including women and children), Iran which is currently oppressing its people and 'disappearing them, China which executes up to 20 dissidents per week, and is occupying Tibet and attacking monks and the people alike.

Yes, good role models for Argentina, the world will surely 'respect' you for simpering at the heels of these dictators.

    @87 - Sg.caro

When was your country ever respected?

You break international treaties and laws.
You put unilateral trade tariffs in place.
You steal companies by supposedly 'nationalising' them, then change your constitution and apply it retrospectively.
You lie on the international stage by claiming that the British removed an Argentine colony, when we have proof that we didn't, you cry and play the victim.
    You defile war memorials.
You try to bully and terrorise 3,000 innocent people and put in place illegal sanctions.
You try to steal their land, when they and their ancestors have lived their longer than Argentina existed.
And now you're reduced to begging on the international stage.

I find it rather hard to understand what you are trying to say, but it seems to be something about the Falklands being in South America.

Wrong. The Falkland Islands are in the South Atlantic, Argentina is in South America.

Mercosur WAS a trading bloque, therefore has no competence over the legality of national flags. I say Mercosur was a trading bloque because as from yesterday it ceased to have any relevance in world trade.
