I thought Argentina an Uruguay were allies? Why would somebody screw over a friend like this?

As the Argentines point out, this isn't in their “interest” either, even less than in Uruguay's, but they have to fight corruption

    @3 BK

The corruption is all Argentine, and if Argentina had any honour, they would just allow the Uruguayans to dig the channel themselves, without interfering.

Argentina will NEVER let this channel be dug because it is a threat to their own port. They are backstabbing gangsters who always try and get their way by force.

Uruguay should just break the treaty (when has Argentina ever honoured a treaty anyway), and get the channel dug themselves.

Perhaps the Chinese would be interested in the job? If not, there are plenty of countries around the world with the expertise to do this dredging quickly.

When is Uruguay going to wake up to the fact that Argentina will never fullfill their obligations over this channel? When are they going to realise that Argentina are only 'allies' whenever it suits them? And when are the going to tell Argentina to feck off? I really hope its soon, for the sake of the Uruguayan economy.

When Argentina spouts off about South American solidarity, it is all one way. Back Argentina up, support Argentina, but when you need help we'll tell you to feck off.

Pepe is an old fool. I have been saying it for a long time that old drunk commie needs to go and fast!
He is going to let CFK drag Uruguay down with Argentina if someone doesn't get him out of there now.

@3 Until you check out where the channels actually are. Then it becomes clear how the argies can screw Uruguay over, and are doing so. Again! Just like it tried to screw Uruguay over the pulp mill. And, oh how the argies can lie!
@6 Pepe is a frightened, senile old man. I have said so before. The Wicked Black Widow Witch of the South on one side and Dilma the Guerrilla on the other!

Uruguay found that Argentina was taking bribes from that company and cancelled the contract. Uruguay is in the process of filing a lawsuit against Argentina over this, and hopefully CFK can get a little “kick in the backside”.

Well, since we control Martin Garcia Island, any country that starts dredging there would be violating Argentine territory the second that any equipment or little rock touches the island. Furthermore, the treaty that ceded Martin Garcia to Argentina (we had threatened war of course), states that no enviromentally damaging activity shall occur in the adjacent waters (which are Uruguayan).

So if Uruguay, or China, or the UK decide to do anything funny, they will be declaring war on Argentina through mutiple treaty violations.

    Tough luck, huh?

I think they would like to block the channel altogether but they need it as for instance recently when the Canal Mitre was blocked by a collision

@11 Unfortunately, the “Treaty between Uruguay and Argentina concerning the Rio de la Plata and the Corresponding Maritime Boundary 19 November 1973” doesn't seem to mention the “rights” you seem to think argieland has. Would you like to point to the relevant Articles. In addition, you might want to note that argieland appears to have breached any number of the Articles of the treaty to the extent that Uruguay could take the matter to the ICJ (expressly provided for in the treaty) or simply declare the treaty null and void due to argie non-compliance. You might want to note Articles 2, 8, 10, 12, 17, 18 and 87.

So if Uruguay, or China, or the UK decide to do anything funny

The item does not even mention Britain or china,
So more anti brit rather than the truth, something to hide perhaps,

Besides why should we get funny?
Don’t you Argies have any comedians of your own, without trying to steal our fun .lol.

Troll is an arrogant porteño who would dearly love to see the independent Republic of Uruguay as part of Argentina. Our previous left wing president Tabaré Vasquez even asked Bush for military aid in case Argentina invaded us when the pulp mill crisis was at its height

@15 Why? Don't tell us you didn't read it before you made your assertions! Just a typical latino. Make it up as you go along and hope nobody questions what you say. Well, I question what you say, and I say you lie. And if I am a “melted in the head chap”, why not see if you can do better? It's been a while since I've seen it said, but DYOR (do your own research).
@18 Have to agree. TiT is also a muppet. Fancy making positive assertions when you haven't even read the treaty. If you think TiT wants to see you as part of argieland, he isn't the only one. Would you like to figure out who your real friends might be? If you stopped kow-towing to CFK? Try to remember who helped you become “the independent Republic of Uruguay”.

PMS: Pre-menstrual syndrome. A condition that, when it strikes, usually during the brief period preceding menstruation, transforms a normally agreeable (within limits, of course) female into a completely selfish-self-centered, mean-spirited, raging bitch, concerned only with her own comfort. Ergo, the poster child would be the woman who appears to possess these characteristics at all times, regardless of the time of the month, which in the case of CFK, is likely immaterial at her age, anyhow.

    I am shocked!!!

I am deeply disturbed by this article implying that Argentine government appointees are capable of taking bribes!!!!

It can't be true, such honest, hard working, ethical people as for example Timerman wouldn't dream...

    And then I woke up!!!!
