If guilty of serious infraction, he should, of course, be imprisoned and removed permanently from any public office.
it has to be seen, if he really resigned himself or not. That seems not clear to me yet. Nevertheless, should he been involved in interests here, he should leave (and he will then). Magellanic people are very eager on not admiting corrupt politicans in their local rows.

To the best of my knewedlege,the Chilean Mayors (Intendentes) are personally appointed by the President of the Republic.
They are in office as long as the President wishes, not one second more, not one second less...............
