The Patagonian squid fishermen should feel honoured to be part of this latest initiative to gain control of the Falkland Islands. When they go out of business I am sure the CFK government will look after them.

So local catches are already insufficient, they don't have information on the biomass, but they are licensing more jiggers and starting them earlier.

The notion of responsible management still hasn't caught on then.

Like every 'initiative' aimed at increasing Argentina's chance of getting sovereignty over the Falklands, watch this one also fizz, splutter and fail like a wet fart.
By again, economically blockading the Islanders (this will only marginally affect the UK financially ), it will force closer ties between FI's and UK , which in effect makes the remote chance of Argentine sovereignty, even more remote.

They just don't get it do they?
If people are friendly to the Brits we are stupid enough to give anything away.
If people are belligerent to the Brits they get their asses kicked hard.

It would take 1000,000 years (at least), of Argentine evolution to understand this basic piece of British psychology.

Any Argentine government equipped with politicians having more than the one brain cell CFK, putrid Jelly and Timidman share, who decide to be friendly (hearts and minds)with FIG, will improve Argentina's economy, though thanks to CFK's bullying Argentina have added the final nails in the coffin of their own claim, even if a succeeeding Argentinian government is friendly to the FIs.

This latest action is another example of that and won't be the last.

Why do they waste such effort, time and money on pointless actions?.

This particular petulant action/initiative will just serve to make them look even more foolish to the rest of the world.

This will undoubtedly cost the Falkland Islands a neat sum of money, for which they must be compensated from the UK.

Because of the financial crisis the money must be found outside the present UK budget.

In 2011 the UK imported goods from China & Hong Kong to a value of UK£ 30,947 million.

A 10 percent point raise of the import tariff yields UK£ 3,095 million minus the amount lost to a 20% reduced import because of the higher tariff, leaving around UK£ 2,476 million, just what is needed for the compensation.

China may not be entirely happy with this, so it is time for UK diplomacy to discuss advantages and disadvantages of increasing the Chinese jigger fleet around the Falklands.

UK imports from China & Hong Kong UK£ 30 947 million
UK exports to China & Hong Kong is UK£ 11 175 million

@6 Or perhaps the compensation could come from an increase in the licence fees for further oil and gas exploration and/or the subsequent levy on hydrocarbon extraction. After all, the squid and the oil all belong to the same Crown and we wouldn't then have to ask China to compromise on their political stance regarding the Falkland Islands as expressed each year in the UN C24.

@9 So let me make sure that I have got this straight.....

Argentina are now so close to the bottom of their delusional barrel that they are willing to sanction over-fishing in their waters just to try and scupper the Falklands fishing industry?

The phrase “cutting ones nose to spite one's face” comes very much to mind - no doubt they will try and twist this one round at some point in the future so that they somehow become “victims” in all of this.

But none of us are in the least surprised by this stupid action are we?

TMBOA is going further out of mental control by sanctioning this short term lunacy. Perhaps she thinks things will improve when all her own jiggers are tied up, never to work again.

The Chin, of course, will be getting ready to take the country over.

    Yes.
It won't work, but yes, that is the plan. Contemptible, isn't it.

Mainly I just feel sorry for all of their fishermen and fisheries scientists whose life work is to manage their resources responsibly and make a decent living. It must make them want to cry.

However, this kind of story also shuts up the pious sanctimonious Argentines who like to come on here and accuse Falkland Islanders of damaging the environment, even of overfishing.

Where are you now chaps? You know who you are.

This is suspiciously like the time when TMBOA said she was going to sell fishing licenses to Falklands waters, and had no takers.

However, Argentina can do whatever it want in its own waters, its a pity that TMBOA doesn't actually care about the livilhoods of her own people, isn't it?

Well perhaps Greenpeace will turn up and sabotage these jiggers in the name of the environment. I mean, if they do, what can Argentina do about it?

    Oh yes, cry.

The sooner the sane people of Argentina get rid of this albatross, that calls itself their president, the better.

On the other hand, any jigger straying into Falklands waters can be seized and their crews arrested.

Do I understand the figures correctly? 120 argie and “related” jiggers landed 65,000 tons. Meanwhile, Falklands jiggers landed 84,211 tons! Are the argies short of food? Would they like to buy some squid? Squid for breakfast, squid for lunch, squid for dinner! If I have calculated correctly, every argie can already look forward to three pounds of squid a year. What happens to the squid that they can't sell? Fertiliser? Or just let it rot? The difference in the catches strongly suggests that the Islanders are better at it. No surprise there! On the basis of the article, can the argies afford to even TRY to catch more?

The real objective behind signing up these Chinese Jiggers is not to put the Argentine fishermen out of business, but to drive the Chinese Jiggers into Falklands waters in pursuit of squid catches.

TMBOA does not care about her own countrymen one little bit. She is after a political objective, to get the Chinese Navy into Argentine waters, to protect the Chinese Jiggers that are arrested for fishing without a license in Falklands territorial waters. She is stirring up a hornets nest with the intention of getting a super-power involved and on her side.

Old Turkey-Neck is too simple & stupid to realise that the Chinese Government can see right through her transparent machinations. They may have a duty to protect Chinese citizens, but they are not about to antagonise both the British & the Americans by supporting a despot who's managed to single-handedly ruin her own economy.

Many an African nation has a healthy number of Chinese engineers, miners or construction personnel, building outposts to provide the Chinese industrial machine with continuous raw materials. The Chinese are very patient. They mostly wait until an economy is so dire, that they are welcomed as saviours. Argentina is getting that way.

However, the Chinese leadership would never get embroiled in a dispute in which they would not benefit. The Chinese know full well that the Falklands would be protected. Not just by fisheries vessels, but also by nuclear submarines too.

Argentina may try to encourage Chile to build Fishery protection corvettes, but the Chileans would know better than to try to protect the 'Argentine' fishing fleet, if that fleet was fishing in someone else's territorial waters.

It will take many years for the squid to repopulate the depleted waters. TMBOA probably thinks that the Falkland squid will migrate to her empty waters around the coast. They won't. In the meanwhile, Argentine fishermen will be cursing her for putting them out of work.

Ms. Cristina Fernandez IS NOT 'Argentina' albeit she's her President and, if she can't change our Constitution to allow her to be elected indefinitely, we will have her for the next 3 years.

Her views ARE NOT those of a sensible, normal person that would choose the best for the country she rules, but those of a vengeful, sadistic, former guerrilla underdog and, what is worst, she is surrounded by a huge band of crooks and mobsters that incite her to go 'for all' by all possible means, including harassing and murder. This is making them rich while the country impoverishes, masses lose their work and rampant inflation erodes salaries across all lines. While inflation takes the fast lift, salaries walk up the stairs...

I'm thus sorry for the future of my country, especially because we were used to better ways of doing things and we're now under the impression that our nation is being thrown to the dogs and no one in the world - save other dictators - would ever again want to do business with us, let alone be friendly.

    Thanks for your candour

I think the term “Argentina” has become shorthand for CFK and the rabid Malvinistas in the Falklands dispute.

While the dispute probably isn't going to go away, that doesn't mean that we can't have a pragmatic and even friendly relationship. The moment that CFK opens her mouth, the clock gets reset in terms of normalising relations between Argentina, the Islanders and the UK

I hope that she gets deposed and that you get a decent and fair government - I have to say, I don't think it will be anytime in the near future.

It is sad that there are a number of decent Argentines, who suffer at the hands of the corrupt Kirchner government. Every day they see their wages buy less, whilst the government mafia get richer. They are frustrated in knowing that their economy could be booming like Brazil's, if only their government did not engage in protectionist policies that reduce foreign trade.

Worse still, there are some who agree that the Falklands do belong to the Islanders, and not to Argentina. They've not been misled by the fiction being taught in Argentine classrooms.

They can see the truth for themselves and know that if Argentina respected the Islanders, traded with them & built friendly alliances, then both the Islands and Argentina would be richer for it.

The problem is that Argentina's political elite have never really understood the British. They may have admired our trade, our empire & the domination of the seas, but they have failed to comprehend that the British would go to any lengths to defend the rights of British citizens to live on their own land under the Government of their own choice.

Sadly, they might have understood us if Manuel Jose Garcia had persuaded the British Government to allow Argentina to become part of the British Empire back in 1815. A deal had already been struck with Spain (another ally) to allow them to recover their empire, so Garcia had no hope. A year later, Argentina declared independence & was so desperate to expand, that they sought to colonise any land, even land belonging to Amerindians (Patagonia) or Islands belonging to another country (deserted by the Spanish), but claimed by Britain 50 years before.

The only way Argentina can get out of this mess is to get rid of the Turkey Neck as soon as possible, before she can do more damage.

If a new Argentine Government set aside any territorial claims & traded with the Islanders, they might just get some oil after all. They might find the Islanders can forgive, but they will never forget.

I think I am correct in stating that the squid in question breed in an area off Uruguay and Argentina and grow to maturity whilst they migrate towards the Falklands.

In reality, your scientists recoginise that Argentina has been over fishing the squid during the juvenile phase hence the lack of tonnage by the Argentine jigger fleet.

The Falklands know full well how much tonnage can be fished from their waters without destroying the future of the squid. You do understand that mature squid weigh more because they are BIGGER?

We get no compensation from the UK if things go bad and the UK gets no direct gain from us if things go well. I don't necessarily agree 100% with that state of play but that's how it is. Of course if things went really bad like say, in Montserrat and Anguilla, we would get DFID support but we are a universe away from their situation and most likely always will be.

As for Argentina, the squid that here exists is absolutelly enough big to be captured. We need to catch the fish as is part of our diet.
Remember its our fish and our waters and our business and it seems we protect environment more than you, look still exists the grey wolf in TDF, whether the warrah in Malvinas was extinguished.

    @ 35 WestisBest & 36 Joe Bloggs

It is called a diplomatic threat and works more or less like this:

The honoured member from e.g. West Brougham raises the matter in the House and suggests that the UK compensate the FI. Another honoured member suggests that the money can be obtained through a raise of the tariff on Chinese imports. A third honoured member just “happens” to have the figures for export and import and a fourth honoured member seconds the proposal. Financial Times writes about the debate on page 8.

Following this, a member of the commercial group at the embassy in Beijing mentions the problem to a vice-vice minister from the Department of Commerce (who has already read Financial Times). The Chinese decide if its worth the trouble. Everybody knows that the compensation will almost certainly never be realised, but now the Chinese - knowing how stubborn John Bull can be - have a pretext for changing the course of events if they find it in their best interest.

The process resembles how a mature government, i.e. not governed by emotions but cool calculation, handles (non-)expropriation of an oil company.

At a press conference some vice minister declares that there is this-or-that problem and that the government is considering expropriating the oil company. The company calculates their probable loss from an expropriation and the contract is re-negociated.

    Steveu,

my governor worked 9 or 10 years in the Foreign Ministery and I have heard so many tales of how he called or visited this-or-that chap to explain possible future problems and suggest a different approach. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't.

    Just ignore SBUS.

It looks like another incarnation of sussie to me as well.

It will never write anything worth actually reading.

I guess that SBUS will now launch into another rant in the style of sussie featuring some kind of homosexual fantasy amongst the incoherent insults.

    You are so predictable SBUS.

Why don't you ask for all our names and addresses again. What a crass way of trying to intimidate people.....................................................................

No, selling more licenses and keeping the fishery open for longer when there are already not enough squid for the boats you have is not catching the squid 'responsibly'. It is ecological terrorism. Your government is a disgrace.

What does the Warrah have to do with this? That's actually quite a long time ago.

The rest of your post makes even less sense. I don't understand a word of that last bit.

malen see you still live in fanstasy! We do not have warships policing our EEZ - we have our own flagged fisherery patrol ships and aircraft. neither do we overfish- our zone is carefully regulated and if escape rates are low - the season is closed early and in those years FIG refunds the proportion of the licence to the fishing companies. Ilex is now virtually factored OUT of our annual economy and Govt budget - so in a bad year it has little effect - in and good year it is just a nice bonus - so there is little Arg can do that will hurt us here - you hurt yourselves far far more as your industry already knows!
The other squid- forget its name- lives and breeds all in our zone so we control it 100% anyway.
The 25yr licences are not for Ilex either.
Millionaires here - maybve 2 or 3 - and they are millionaires on paper, assets and ships etc. - unaware of anyone who has it in the bank!
Your “nasty brits” dont even catch Ilex- the Japanese and Koreans are the main licence holders, and some Spanish and a few others.

    Re. 45 & 61

The important thing is that is must be done by a mid-level chap, never top brass like a minister or an ambassador, as this will create “an episode”.

If you get the opportunity, ask somebody from FCO what they think 'Tweedledum' (or 'china shop') is doing for the moment.

The most likely answer is that she is preparing a new speech about the Falkland Islands, which she will call Malvinas.

Argentina's new licences are 'human nature' in action.
The fewer squid licences in TFI take the larger 'share' of the regional catch (if we are to believe the landing stats).
Argentina needs more money quickly, and licences bring in the 'readies'.
Short term gain, leading to medium term national and environmental disaster.

This is much worse than the EU CFP, where there is some attempt, at least, to match yield to stock size.

With the Argentine economy slowing down and the inflation eating up profit a massive fishing industry will Help Argentina to get back on their feet, if 3000 illegal aliens can theft the fish why couldn't 30.000.00 have the rights to feed themselves or are the white people the only ones with rights to eat. Racism is embedded in WTO and IMF rules and regulations. I am going to add south American squid to my diet this month to help the Argentine economy. If fakland island company have being fishing Argentina's sea for years why shouldn't we??? Stupid is as stupid does, let's stop being stupid.

“white people the only ones with rights to eat”
Most Argentinians are white and you won't find many Falkland Islanders with white faces, even in the winter.
When I first visited the Islands, I asked if there were many Indian/Eastern workers in the Islands as many had very dark skins. I was told quite catagorically “ They're Falkland Islanders! Haven't you poms heard of suntans”?
