Anticipating a greater demand for housing from oil developers and support activities the Falkland Islands government is advancing plans to further expand Stanley. Additional funding to take in phase two of the Sapper Hill housing development to the south of Stanley has been approved by the Standing Finance Committee totalling £1.3 million for a further 27 housing plots. Sep 13th, 2012 - 01:45 am - Link - Report abuse -1@ ProRG_American - I am British and I work in South America in the oil and gas industry and I know the companies drilling there and they said to me that it's their intention, and always has been their attention, to store the oil on tankers and ship direct to the Chinese to produce so I am afraid all the argie bargie that the argies are producing at the moment is just a waste of their energy. Insted of making life difficult for themselves they should just accept that the UK government will always support freedom and the right to choose and that the argies should just get on with their neighbours. The only loser in this will be Argentina. They should know better than to mess with the brits!

Sep 13th, 2012 - 10:07 am - Link - Report abuse +1Care to explain How? ... because so far they've not done a thing to affect Falklands business other than give them lots of PR on the world-stage that they would have struggled to get on their own.
Oil not going to Argentine just means Argentine workers miss out on good jobs and their economy on foreign income: I cant see Argentine businesses benefittting from any of the obvious expansion going on, and I cant see them affecting (negatively) anything to do with the oil & gas exploration, extraction or any associated business.
Its really just a lot of hot air and fewer and fewer people are listening (to Argentina's government) anyway: there is only so long that people cna listen to the same tired-old arguments over and over and over and over again.
It's gotten CFK nowhere and cut Argentines off from legitimate business....and that's about all CFK has achieved.

Sep 15th, 2012 - 08:55 am - Link - Report abuse +1Putting future immigration policy aside, do I take it you now believe in the principle of self determination for the Falkland Islanders?
If so this is a major advance on the part of Argentina and/or its supporters and war might yet be avoided.
@31 They can be bought by JB and rented out to foreign workers.
Sep 15th, 2012 - 10:01 am - Link - Report abuse 0The Daily Telegraph reported that immigration had slowed due to one of the world’s most restrictive policies. Newcomers are not allowed to apply for islander status, giving them voting rights among other things {including the purchase of property}, until they have completed seven years of residency. That can be done only by repeatedly renewing temporary labour contracts. Even then, only 40 people can apply each year, and not all are accepted.

So self determination it is then. Took a bit of time but Argentina and/or its supporters finally arrived.
Sep 15th, 2012 - 02:07 pm - Link - Report abuse +1Now whats the matter with the immigration rules, seems fine to me.
If the Islanders don't want dogs shitting all over the place, that's surely their right.
Granted it's not easy but you can bring dogs in. There are more and more each year. Plus the choice of island-bred ones is getting better all the time. If Dover knows so much about the islands he'll know why so many Falkland Islanders aren't keen on dogs.

I have no problem with Argies living, working, in the Falklands as long as it remains under British control. The reason why it should remain under British control is because the people who live there are British and want to remain British. It is not the British that does not allow the argies in but it is their own government - their own government that causes people to protest outside the casa rosada banging pots and demanding democracy and pleading with Cristina that she not change the constitution so that she can force her personality and politics on Argentina for another term. We should not be attacking Argentina but helping them. Perhaps if they are allowed to come to the Falklands they will see how democracy and a well governed country could be like and it may well be eye opening for them. I wait for the day when Argentina will have a proper government and when there will be normal realations between the kelpers and the main land again. I am positive that this will happen and it can be the only solution!

Sep 16th, 2012 - 04:52 pm - Link - Report abuse 0@40 It is a widely held and publicly expressed view that the Falkland Islanders cannot allow any relaxation of the stance they have always shown towards Argentina. However, you would rather publically betray your country and undermine Britian and British interests, just to spite your current Prime Minister.

Argentinians are about to have those very rights taken away from them - and YOU support that government!

@58 - you're totally right, the ´82 war was Argentina's fault and they did shit in houses cos they don't know how to use toilets - but if they went back to the Falklands now, just for a visit, maybe we can show them how to be civilised?
