Appealing to social networks thousands of Argentines Thursday evening took to the streets of the country’s major cities to protest some of the latest measures from the government of President Cristina Fernandez including the re-re-election plans and the increasing restrictions to the purchase of dollars. The time is come, the populist and demagogue governments that spread accross south america a decade ago are begining to come to an end, people are tired of their erratic economic and social policies. They will go, or else, the people will kick them out violently.

Sep 14th, 2012 - 10:51 am - Link - Report abuse 0It was a peaceful well organized protest, not like those made by thugs, rioters or those paid by sindicates.
This is a sign of good things to come. Its also good to see that people are waking up and willing to put a stop to this regime.
People did not only protest because of the re-re election, it was also because of many liberties that they have taken, the crime and insecurity on the streets, the corruption that never ends and the lies on the INDEC (Or like i call them FAILDEC)
Nonetheless i look forward to take part on another protest.

@30 Anibal speaking like that and CFKC saying she isn't scared, is likely to inflame the protesters even more. Arrogance is not going to get them out of this mess. They should be acting humble and take the complaints seriously if they want to placate the masses.
Sep 14th, 2012 - 02:07 pm - Link - Report abuse 0And CFKC trying her widow-woman-I-did-not-have-cancer victim stance is not going to be well received. Living in a ivory tower with everything she could possibly desire?

Come on Argentines! Keep it up to get rid of this uber arrogant, malevolent, narcissistic lot.
@26 Engineer,
Sep 14th, 2012 - 02:18 pm - Link - Report abuse 0I was over there in San Juan recently visiting a friend who has been sent over to that side of Pascua-drama. Something that astonished me was the complete lack of food in supermarkets.
Here in La Serena the supermarkets are overflowing with food of every variety, but just over the border the situation is so drastically different. It is no wonder the 10s of thousands who come over here in summer go crazy in the supermarkets.
On the positive side, at least they can have a protest without the scum showing up and turning it in to a riot.
@35 Its funny you mention thatm until recently (about 2 weeks ago) there was a distinct lack of goods on the shelves. Dont get me wrong we had the basics and didnt exacly starve but about 2 weeks we went shopping and realised there was suddently a much bigger variety and much more on the shelves. It was surreal.
Sep 14th, 2012 - 02:26 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Its not food, its electronics. Everything is far cheeaper juts across the border. However the Argentine government is now slapping a 50% import duty on goods brought in from neighbouring countries so it will stop very soon.

Pretty simple in theory but it would require a new 'government'.
I think the media are underestimating the number of protesters, in our small town of about 10.000 people, almost a thousand congegated in the plaza to protest against insecurity, encroachment on personal freedoms, corruption and attack on the Constitution. This was probably repeated in most of the towns in Argentina.

I think with another protest on October 1st and that will will garner more strength. As they say.....gathering clouds make a strong storm. Hanibal...I mean anibal fernandez is only going to infuriate the masses more by either being 1- so out of touch the his citizens....or 2- insulting them by saying he has no idea what they were protesting about.

Like i always say, it's amazing how hate blinds people's minds, most us know that cristina doesn't have enough majority in both chambers in order to reform the constitution, however some ignorant people continue with that idea. On the other hand, i heard yesterday the arguments of the people who were protesting in plaza de mayo, many of them criticised the denounces of corruption cases that involve c. f. k's government, which is correct, however those people always criticise only the denounces that involve her goverment, and never protest to criticise the denounces of corruption cases that involve the conservative government from the buenos aires city, these pathetic omisions show that actually those people don't care in absolut about fighting against corruption, they are just this argument, in a very despisable and hipocrite way just to criticise a government that they don't like. On the other hand, many people only insulted c. f. k, and said that her gov. is a dictatorship, and expressed also that there is not any freedom of press, however neather this time, nor in all the rest of the oportunities that people protested against the government, were repressed, beside they were transmited by the chanels that are against the governmnet and those that support it, what kind of dictatorship and lack of freedom of press are these?, they could protest with total freedom, like in all the others oportunities, beside, there was not an incident. If the oponent politic parties know how to interpreted what happened yesterday, they will have to brake with the alliances that some of them have with some powerfull corporations, and will have to build an alternative of power, otherwise those people will have to continue cacerolenado, there is a lot more to say about all this question.

“We already know it’s one of the best shale gas reserves globally,” says Glaubitz. “Now the key is in managing the above-ground risk.” READ ON

I hope your wrong though that Congressional arithmetic rules out constitutional change; Cristina and the left should go into the midterm elections on an agressively reformist platform of updating, even refounding, the state and sweeping away the neoliberal holdovers of Menem's constitution. If this includes bringing in re-election, great; if not, I see no automatic need for a power struggle or a lame duck presidency as Cristina could just transfer her own support to her handpicked Cristinista candidate as Lula did with Dilma and Nestor did with her; I think Timmerman is the overall best bet for this role but Alicia and Kicillof are also strong contenders. And if the people feel the need for Cristina to be the leader AND the contitution hasn't changed, there are ways round that, like the resignations of 1973...

So, what you are saying is, we can find a way to subvert the Constitution, or the the intent of the law, to get what we want!
Sounds like corruption to me. Make no mistake, the people who feel the need to keep CFK in power are different from the people of Argentina!
The rioters were NOT middle-class wealthy people, upset about holidaying abroad. The rioters were a broad cross-section of Argentine society, proletariat and educated professionals alike.

Sep 19th, 2012 - 01:31 pm - Link - Report abuse 0It was so obvious that you were going to say about all the distortions, lies or half truths that are published about arg. in the world press. This is evident that you are just one more usefull ignorant of the conservative press. At the same time that you say that arg. is an international pariah, a few days ago it was publised an agreement between arg. and rusia, in order to explore over the arg. territory with ypf, beside, who told you that we are on the verge of being out from the g.20, let me tell you that depsite repsol's lobby, it couldn't impide the fact that there are more companies which are interested in exploring in argentina, like chevron and others, i don't know what kind of international pariah is that. On the other hand, at the same time that you say about a soposed decreasing democracy, or express that this government is authoritarian, this is evident that you don't realise about how rediculous and ignorant you are, let me tell you that a few days ago, there were huge marchs against c. f. k's gov. in different places of arg., and people weren't repress neather this time, nor in all the rest of the oportunities that people protested against the gov., in fact, the gov. doesn't repress the social protest, it represses only if there is violence between the protestors, beside, the protests were transmitted openly not only by the chanels that are against the gov., but by the chanels that support it too, i don't know what kind of dictatorship or authoritarian gov. is it. Anyway, i dont' deny that c. f. k's gov. has contradictions and negative aspects, like the denounces of corruption cases, but only an ignorant like you, can make such a mendacious and too partial analysis about argentina. There is a lot more to say about argentina's situation.
I am far from unaware of what is transpiring in argentina. Chevron was in argentins for over twenty years and worked with YPF in the past. Nothing was contracted to do anything beyond what Chevrom was already doing. Yet they signing a memorandom to humor ass lips. Check out the last three 10qQs. Russia agreed to import gas for them....more imports....no exploration. Russia is ready to rape Argentina faster then a bolshevic.
Sep 19th, 2012 - 02:38 pm - Link - Report abuse 0You guys in SA toss the word democracy so often .....democratic union.....democratic prcocesses.....democratic protests, I think you almost belive you really have it!
I am far from a conservation and loath a socialist. If you do not like what I write........bow to your own ignorance and do not read it. It obvious that anyone that writes negative things against Argentina is a conserevative and enemy of the state. Argentina will soon own the medi anyway and nothing negative will be published internally. The last area for ass lips to conquer with be the internet. I am sure that China will show them how to achieve this.

My country Argentina is anti-british and will remain anti-british.
I repeat, former argentine president Carlos Menen did a mistake to resume diplomatic relations with the UK.

Sep 20th, 2012 - 06:24 pm - Link - Report abuse 0I don't think that you are an enemy just because you have a negative view about arg., calling enemy to somebody who has a negative opinion about arg. or the gov., is actually a stupid distortion that is expressed all the time by the conservative and powerfull press from here, which has a huge push of power with c. f. k.'s government, i only believe that you are very missinformed, and buy so easily the too partial informations, the lies, or the distortions that are publised in the media, i already explained all my arguments in my message 168. On the other hand, if you think that soon there will be only chanels that support te government, this is evident that you don't know anything about the broadcast law that was approved three years ago, which still couldn't be applied totally for absolutly all the mediatic corporations, because of the powerfull lobby and the shamefull legal protection that the most powerull corporation of this country could get, (clarin) that's shows actually who is the owner of the power in this country.

I am not worried. Thpugh when I was in Buenos Aires in January of 2011 I remember protests there, they blocked streets, closed businesses and distrupted tthe entire area.
