Full article 92 comments

The Royal Navy’s destroyer HMS Edinburgh left on Monday Portsmouth on her final planned deployment. It marks a historic milestone for both the ship and the Royal Navy as it will be the last time a Type 42 destroyer deploys on operations as they make way for the new-generation Type 45 destroyers. “On Atlantic patrol HMS Edinburgh takes over from HMS Dauntless, the second of the T45 Destroyers which joined the Fleet in November 2010 and which visited the Falklands and other South Atlantic islands for the first time during the first half of 2012.”

And didn't the T45 scare the crap out of TMBOA?

Talk about scweem and scweem and scweem until she has an aneurism?

    We should hope.

Scrap yard? So? She is being replaced moron. She will be decommissioned and HMS Duncan will be her replacement. So in reality we have gone from one powerful Type 42 'Pirate ship' to an extremely powerful Type 45 'Pirate Ship.'

You haven't really thought it through have you?

I have thought it through Dingaling. Being replaced by another pirate ship that will join the rest of the fleet at the bottom of the Atlantic if you keep up your nonsence.

Ohhhh we are scared, but hang on for our fleet to end up at the bottom of the Atlantic then Argentina would have to try and sink it. But with what? Oh thats right a few worn out Exocets and a small crappy worn out Navy that spends most of its days rusting in their Harbours. Yeah.....Do you know what I think our fleet is just fine.

Will it join the Belgrano???? The pride of the RG fleet jajajaja nothing else ventured out of port after that. Your naval fleet couldn't sink a rowing boat. our airforce is still flying the same planes it did 30 years ago.

so a threat with nothing to back it up, iam sure the Royal Navy will not loose any sleep.

Oh but hang on maybe Argentina could use its airforce to sink our fleet, oh but wait that also spends most of its time lying around falling apart. And even if all the Argie planes were flying they are still outnumbered 4 to 1 by the RAF, Fleet Air Arm and Army Air Corps. Yeah I think the UK and our military assets are just fine.

Here in Argentina we are heavily protesting the Kirchner administration, their endless corruption in every corner of the government, stealing of public funds, outright lies to the public about everything from security to the economy to official inflation figures.
Today we start a new protest in Argentina - it's called the “ANTI-KK campaña”. In our language “KK” is pronounced KaKa, and that is what we think of the Kirchner administration.
We ask all citizens against the Kirchner “KK” regime to leave a bag of excrement or bring your dog to defecate on the steps of Congress, on the steps of the Casa Rosada, or in front of the door of any office of “La Cámpora” or another militant organization of this joke of a president called “Kolina”.
Leave bags of excrement, or garbage or any other repulsive, non-dangerous item that stinks on the steps of or in front of any of these government related places. This is a peaceful protest, non-violent, and will send a strong message to the “KaKa” government that is destroying lives in Argentina.

Argentina: Supermarket consumption projected to grow by 5%

Mass consumption of foods, beverages and toiletry products in the supermarket channel will grow 5% this year, predicted industry sources.

“In volume, the increased consumption from supermarkets this year will be 5%” compared with 2011, said Daniel Fernandez Carrefour network president.

“Retail is very competitive. Costs are stable if there is no reason to raise prices,” said Fernandez to the press when asked about the request made yesterday by President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner to entrepreneurs for more investment and price stability after announcing an increase in universal allocations.

He added that consumption is good. “Prices are not moving up and down. The issue is the cost, where we must seek additional efficiencies.”

On another note, he said the supermarket covers a third of retail sales in Argentina, which determines that is has potential for growth and expansion, the reason why it is penetrating the market with new formats.

He said that even “in Brazil and Colombia, the development of the sector is greater”.

On the supply of low-cost food, Fernandez explained that “our responsibility is to try to encourage access to consumption.

”This option exists since 2009 and we have been changing every 15 days through various menus. Ther are 40 products, 10 of which have subsidized prices through the chain,” he explained.

It was actually the USS Missouri Mr Islander1, one of the old Iowa class battleships. The missile in question had actually passed Missouri but it still posed a threat to other American and Nato shipping so it was good that the SeaDart did destroy it. Trivia: First ever missile to missile engagement. i.e. the first anti air missile to destroy a cruise missile.

I served on HMS Glasgow (Type 42) when I was in the Royal Navy and these destroyers have been very useful assets in the RN.

However they have done there time and now is the time for them to gracefully retired and replaced by the most sophisticated class of destroyers ever built in the world, the Type 45's.

As HMS Dauntless, being better than a T-42, was militarising the South Atlantic, then replacing it with a T-42 (like the ones you have), is therefore de-militarising the South Atlantic.

@3 There are FOUR Type 45 destroyers in commission. The FIFTH and SIXTH will be commissioned in 2013 and 2014. Each Type 45 is the equivalent of 5/6 Type 42s. Argieland doesn't have ANYTHING capable of taking on a Type 45. And, in Type 42 terms, we will have 30!
@5 Please send that f****** air force. Then argieland won't have ANY air farts!
@20 There used to be a HMS Glasgow. Another Type 42. Argies damaged it. But it still lasted until 2009. Then there are some Type 23 frigates. HMS Argyll, HMS Montrose, HMS Sutherland. Patrol vessel. HMS Clyde.

@38 The batch 3 York, Gloucester, Manchester and Edinburgh were longer and wider making them more seaworthy in rough weather than the earlier batches plus they had strengthening beams down both waists from the start of the focs'le to the flight deck which added to there overall displacement (weight) but again added to stability, funnily though they were still faster than the earlier lighter batches. York fastest was clocked at 35 knots when i was on her over a measured mile. The passageways were wide enough to pass people without having to turn sideways on, something that always bothered me on the earlier ones. Worst trait was the sewage treatment plant vent was just below the flight deck where i worked and they used to vent it at harbour stations when we were all waiting to tie her up (purposely of course) but overall no gripes at all I loved every minute on them both.

Cheers Mr Slatzzz, I was aware of the Batch 3's being better at sea stability, but I was unaware of the Sewage treatment issues. I heard recently that the Captain of HMS Dauntless or Diamond was very keen to beat Yorks record which of course still hasn't been broken despite her being a 35+ year old design. Still I shall join you in missing these old girls greatly.

Well, ignores the right of first occupancy as requested by Queen Elizabeth of England.
Therefore, in 1765 England can not claim anything.
In 1829 he produced the protest of England, it is true, but omitted to say that from 1774-1811 Spain exercised sovereignty without British claims.
Then, as Spain may occupy the islands for 37 years and then England the claim the islands as their own?

“Well, ignores the right of first occupancy as requested by Queen Elizabeth of England.
Therefore, in 1765 England can not claim anything.”
    1. England did not claim the Islands-Great Britain did(which at the time included England, Scotland Wales and the whole of Ireland).
2/-So this means as France had the first settlement only by a year they own the Islands ?
    France is not Argentina.

By your logic Argentina cannot claim the islands as they were not the first to setttle the islands.
The first time the Government of Buenos Aires claimed the Falklands (via Vernet) was 1829 -(this is affirmed from Vernet family diaries read out this year at the UN). The British first settled the Islands (to be precise a part of West Falkland) in 1765.

.“Then, as Spain may occupy the islands for 37 years and then England the claim the islands as their own?”
Spain and UK shared soveriegnty in the 1770s as the treaty they signed to avoid war left the situation as it had been before. Spain settled a small area of the East Island, Britain a small area of the West Island.

However Spain finally gave up its claim in 1863 when it paid a visit to the Falkland Islands saluting the Union Jack and exchanging presents.

So, if as you say the years between 1774-1811 when Spain was solely on the Islands (where both countries had a claim), and Britain was not present mean that the British claim lapsed, then even if the government of Buenos Aires/ United Provinces off the River Plate is accepted as 'Argentina', then an occupation of 1829 (the first evidence that anyone claimed the islands for the Buenos Aires government by Vernet, (who also accepted British sovereignty incidentally)-to 1833 equals no more than four years of occupation under a claim.
The government of BA/UPotRP/Argentina was absent from the Islands from 1833-1982.
That is more than the 37 years Great Britain was absent. Argentina made no protest about the Islands from 1884-1939, that's 45 years.

You may be interested to hear that HMS Ambush has arrived at Faslane.
Details and pictures can be seen at the RN website.

Today I was watching HMS St. Albans exercising with two Hunt class minesweepers - HMS Cattistock and HMS Bangor.
They were sailing line abreast, then they would change to line astern then the two minesweepers would change station by crossing the bows of St. Albans.. I watched them off and on for about an hour though my telescope - they were 30 miles up the Firth of Clyde from me.
Nice to see we still have a navy and a pleasant way to spend a warm sunny afternoon.
I see that on the Ship AIS website at 2310 that the minesweepers are moored at the Tail of the Bank at Greenock and HMS ST. Albans is half way between my home town , Ayr and the Isle of Arran
I thought I would lighten the proceedings with this bit of trivia.

My maths was wrong-that should have been no Argentine claim for 55 years, which makes their claim even less convincing.

Just come on and 2012 has been removed,
So I don’t know what it said,
    It must have been offensive,
    And someone complained, [thank you]

But if this is the measure, of argentine bloggers,
then merco press should remove them permanently,
This is a blogg for mature people to discuss topics and bloggs,

Not desperate people advertising their wears,

Thank you.. 93 days to go, till the end of 2012,
A bad year , for some,

    @73 Briton
2012/Sussie usually has no substance to his posts anymore.
In this case, he had a shtfit about the 94 day countdown and the usual rant against you, briton, and UK posters in general. Something funny to do with anatomy.
Off-topic and offensive, and not relevant, as usual.

    Thank you troy,
We think 93 days to go, is getting to her/him/them/
But they chose the name of a year,
And its been a bad year,
No sense of humour, that’s their problem,

Besides if CFK is forced to except David’s friendship to leave the Falklands alone,
Where does that these Argies bloggers with the wiggly tongues,

You are getting boring -the same insults. Could you get hold of a thesaurus and find something fresh to say. The English language is full of wonderful insults.

    @80 - Aussie

What business is it of your how we spend our tax money?

These carriers and other vessels under construction provide jobs for a lot of people. It's better to have people working than to have them claiming benefits, isn't it?

People with wages tend to want to spend money on those little luxuries in life, which in turn helps the economy.

Besides, Britain needs its carriers, as you never know when the next petty mad dictator with a chip on their shoulders, and a desperate need to distract their population will appear and try to steal your land and ethnically cleanse the population.

Last time we let our guard down people died. We won't make the same mistake twice.

Heard something interesting this AM on a Spanish language radio station from Los Angeles. Argentine DM Puricelli will be traveling to Germany early next year to discuss modernixation of the MEKO ships. Let's see, that's 10 of them. How many “Dauntlesses's” will you have?

A piece of news today. The first RN personnel have arrived at Rosyth , Scotland to take up familiarisation duties on the First Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carriers. What now to your hypothetical upgrades ?

l thought that you Argentines were a “peaceful” nation. lol
Why do you need 10 more warships?
Do you think that someone will invade you?
Or are you planning to invade the Falkland lslands again?
Why are you militerising the South Atlantic?
Are you ready for Round Three?
Lets just see how good you are.

    Qué pelotudo que sos!!!!!

A slight overestimate of the improvement of the poverty figures in Chile, compared with our's Chile is Utopia. INDEC (miente) gives our poverty level at 25% whereas most independent sources put it at 35%+ and Chile's is at 15.1% looking on the black side.

    I repeat you are repelotudo!!!!!!

Which one did you mean - WIMP is singular, if you mean both it should be WIMPS.
I have tried the post code you gave but it is not for the address you have given.
112 Tintagel castle sounds like the home of King Arthur of the Britons.
If so, you don't know who you are dealing with. He has Merlin the Magician and a fierce dragon as allies, so watch it !! Also, he is not English and certainly not a wimp.
As to the other gentleman, if he is from where you say he is, then he is an Ulsterman and would not take kindly to being labelled English.
I have never yet met an Ulsterman who could be described as a Wimp. Again, it depends on which foot he kicks with. Anyone in Scotland or N.I. could explain this to you if you ask politely. Es posible ?

I am sure the US Dept. of Justice will sideline the extradition of Abu Hamza and fast track the rendition of Mr. CLB for having the affrontery to disagree and be as rude to you as you are to him.

As your fellow Americans are fond of saying -have a nice day - I have other plans.
