UK universities have taken four of the six top slots in a global university “league table” for 2011-12. Cambridge - top last year - was second in the QS World University Rankings, which are based on a number of areas. Read full article
No - the LSE will be somewhere much lower down the list. Find the top Argentine Uni and count up the list about 100 places or so. Should be about there.
In capitalism, everyone does not get everything equally otherwise you end up with mediocrity. But there is always something at every level for everyone.
If only British students could afford to study in them!
they can, they just cant expect to get everything for free. i both worked and joined the TA to fund my time @ university... it isnt rocket science after all (arf arf)
You can always tell when someone begrudges having to invest in their own future that they are pretty much no-hopers. If you won't invest in your own future, why should anyone else?
Contrary to what BK would have you believe, university education is free to the financially disadvantaged. Full bursaries and maintenance grants are still available. For mid-range income families, there are loans that do not have to be paid back until the student earnings reach a certain level, and then it is a very small percentage.
Repayment per month
£21,000 and under no repayments
£25,000 £30
£30,000 £67.50
£40,000 £142.50
£50,000 £217.50
£60,000 £292.50
In Scotland, university is free, although that is likely to be scrapped now because the government there have just worked out they cannot afford it. They are always a few steps behind. You have to wonder if BK is actually from Scotland or he would know this.
In capitalism, everyone does not get everything equally otherwise you end up with mediocrity. But there is always something at every level for everyone.
This is exactly what I cannot stand about capitalists, they never speak the truth.
And I believe in capitalism in the sense of survival of the fittest, just like I believe in evolution.
But guess what, in capitalism, there is not a level for everyone. Either you make it, or you don't. No middle ground. that is why inequality always increases and never goes down if capitalism is completely left to operate alone, which no one here has the guts of doing actually.
By nature, capitalism's end result is that the fittest survive. The fittest being the strongest phyisically (sports and high paying hard labor), the most genetically beautiful (modelling, acting, entertainment economy), or the most intelligent in immanent IQ and/or effort put in education which can compensate for an averasge IQ (science, politics, any intellectual pursuit).
If you do not have above average genetics for strength, beauty, or intelligence you will have a miserable life under capitalism. Those are just the facts, and it is so dishonest that capitalists never admit this.
I absolutely loathe such a craven stance. Oh but everyone has their place in capitalism, how absurd. Capitalism is like Evolution, winner takes all, loser dies.
And none of your countries have real capitalism because you do not have the guts to implement it. Perhaps because many of you would sink if true survival of the fittest/smartest/prettiest was instituted.
Also, a natural by-product of capitalism is Eugenics. Anoyne for capitalism should be for Eugenics.
A little commie are you TIT? Your posts are very hypocritical.
Everyone in the UK has equal access to school, collage & University if they so wish.
Those who choose not to take advantage of that has only themselves to blame, it's not a case of survival of the fittest, it's a case of life will reward those who wan't to get up & go.
Even a failed education is not neccicarily a failed life, life is what you make it and their will alway's be winners & losers, It is just unfortunate for you to be an Argentine (loser).
That's because you don't have capitalism, whatsoever.
I'm not a communist, I hate centralized command. I prefer capitalism, but real capitalism, mercantilism, not the crap you see in Europe or even the USA. Let people live, or die. That would be brave to implement.
I still don't get why everyone here continues to insult me for my nationality. I thought you people weren't the racists.
14... Is it racist day today, you seem to be making the same accusation on several news items. oh to be a troll and not have to work for a living.
You talk utter bile and show your total ignorance of the world. your only conduit to knowledge is google. Grow up, go back to school and finish your education.
@15 I think, a few articles back, someone suggested that TiT is ten. Because he said he had 60 years left. Unfortunately, his accusations of racism miss by a mile. We may hate all or some argies but, for a start, argies aren't a race. So it isn't their race that's the problem, it's their nationality. Amongst so many other faults. And TiT displays so many of those faults.
•Stanford is free if your parents make under $100 thousand dollars a year.
•Harvard-free up to $80,000.
•UC Berkeley, free under $80k. Room, board & cash at at least two of those Unis under $60 k.
These are in the top twenty in the world.
*The UC and Cal State system: free tuition for state residents-3 million students currently. (Many campuses in the top fifty).
The American difference is this: U.S. has BY FAR the lowest taxes. Almost noone paid sales tax at the U.S.'s largest retailer. That means theres EXTRA MONEY.
So if you're NOT into a community college, (we have plenty), and you HAVE to go to a school 2,000 miles away because it's COOL, go on, pay for the education of your dreams.
I agree with Elaine that people that pay value their investment. I also like the Utopia where we exchange things freely as well =)
#20 I think as an American the USA is a pretty good country to live in. But the statement you made are the farthest things from reality. Except state college is free for residents in California.
There is no FEDERAL sales taxes at retail stores, but almost every state levies a sales tax.
Conqueror I agree, TiT is the worst offender of his labeling of everyone else. I think his own prejudices creates his deep rooted anger. Most of all, he loves his country so much he doesn't even live there and he has no clue what capitalism is. He's an angry little boy with a chip on his shoulder that one day someone in live is going to rid him of his troubles.
Yes, of course it is free... if you are in the 0.00000000000001% of the population they feel deserves it.
That's fine, I have nothing against competition of students, but please don't tell me it is free because the USA is something like it 2o something place in college grads... yeah, sounds like it is working.
Haven't gotten a chance to say this, but I love your analysis-it's usually better than the news, it's that good.
I was using Amazon.com as an example. (a correction, it's the biggest retailer in the world, not the U.S. as I said, where it's 15th.)
Soes,
1.The U.S. has no VAT. NO federal sales tax.
2. We had a rule saying if you don't have a physical warehouse in a state, you don't HAVE to charge sales tax. Then came the INTERNET.
In California alone, Amazon represented a lost $150 million a year in sales tax not charged.
(This figure doesn't include the money uncollected by all the OTHER internet retailers, like Ebay).
And mazon has been in operation for a whole 18 years! JUST this month it finally capitulated to charge sales tax-in California.
Amazon only collected sales tax in 5 out of 50 states until about a year ago.
It dropped the legal battles with SOME states, and added sales tax to a grand total of -13-states, lol.
Yes you are correct. I thought you meant retail stores in general. Internet sales are tax free unless the store is based in that state or has a retail outlet(like Walmart that has both internet and store sales) in that state.......for now. I live in Massachusetts and they are antsy about getting tax revenue as several other states. But then Massachusetts use to be know as Taxachusetts, but really has a low income based flat tax.
Personally I would love to shift to a VAT tax and eliminate income (just for payroll incomes) taxes. However the argue here on VAT taxes is that the lower (poor) who typically pay no income taxes with be burdened with taxes when they but food and cloths via higher prices.
Thank you, my comments are not liked by all, but like in all democracies, you can please some of the people all the time and all of the people some of the times.
And TiT......capitalism is not survival of the fittest, business is. However capitalism is resource=risk/reward of private ownership as opposed to quasi and government owned entities. Governments can keep businesses going year after year of losses, private enterprises cannot. Capitalism and socialism to business is what the Army and Navy is to war.
You continue to disappoint me, young man. Not content with making yourself look chidish you are now making yourself look like a Nazi sympathiser:
Eugenics: started in America in 1883. It was presented as a mathematical science that could be used to predict the traits and behaviors of humans, and in a perfect world, to control human breeding so that people with the best genes would reproduce and thus improve the species. It was an optimistic school of thought with a profound faith in the powers of Science.
The trappings of science, anyway. Even in its day, many people saw that eugenics was a dubious discipline, riddled with inconsistencies.
The eugenics craze was already fading when the horrors of institutionalized eugenics revealed in Nazi Germany during World War II doused it entirely as a movement.
the internet is on my phone lol. I have a personal interest in seeing argentina bury asslips ans the loser policies for nobodies.
if you live in rgland, you will see it die over the next 12 months up close and personal. But I have yet to see an asslips supporter actually living in that cancerous country......they all fled already.
