“The article begins quoting Governor Nigel Haywood who states that despite a booming fishing industry and recent nearby oil discoveries, the key to the successful future of the Falkland Islands is tourism.” What utter compelte and utter twaddle.
The Governor needs to look out of his window and see what is currently driving the future economy (and the Falklands future political security), and it ain't tourism! Tourism is but one element of the current economy, but “never” the future economy or the long-term private sector backbone!

To be fair he did say the FUTURE of the Falklands, the oil industry will be lucrative to be sure but it's fundamentally unsustainable, when it's gone it's gone and that's it. And fisheries? no matter how much we slap each others backs about how brilliantly we manage our fishery that's not a guaranteed source of income either, look what's happened to fisheries in other parts of the world. Tourism at least is sustainable.

He added: ”I think if you look at the Falklands in the next three to five years you will see a big change because the country is definitely invest in it ... punches above its weight.

This wrong. We must tell the truth. The UN Resolution 2065 is very clear. The Falkland Islands are not a country. are implanted colony. The committee considers UN decolonization of Gibraltar as a colony. Of the 16 cases of colonialism in the world, 10 are for the UK they are: Anguilla, Bermuda, Gibraltar, the Falkland Islands, Cayman Islands, Turks and Caicos Islands, Monserrat Island, Pitcairn Island and St. Helena Island.
Just look at any web page concerning the decolonization committee of United Nations refers to are a colony. No one country.

The future of the Falklands, once the oil and gas have gone, will be to act as the main base for exploitation of natural resources in the British Antarctic Territory (BAT). By then BAT will have a different name but it will still belong to the UK (if it still exists) or Brussels (if it doesn't).

@5 You haven't told the truth since you've been on here. And you have been warned about continuing to spout argie government lies, misinformation and propaganda. Now you are going to start getting reported. UN resolution 2065 is NON-BINDING. Moreover, it was overtaken by your illegitimate, ill-advised and ill-fated invasion in 1982. When, incidentally, you failed to comply with UN Security Council resolution 502. A resolution that was BINDING on all UN member states.
@6 Then you should have more respect for your elders. Delinquent!

    “are implanted colony”
Yes, implanted with half the population invited to stay in January 1833, with half from Buenos Aires, 2 Frenchmen, 2 British (one of which would now be classed as Irish as he was from Dublin,), 2 germans, I believe some native indiansand some slaves frreed by the British administartion in 1833.
But not implanted with horedes of Englishmen.

No British implants from HMS Clio, except the ones Argentinians made up in their imagination.

    who likes poverty?..
I am sure that millions of Argentine citizens who are in this predicament do not like it but have no choice.

Why is it that you tell us you live in America and enjoy “the good life”. Is it because you cannot get this in Argentina?

Why would they want to build something like Arbor Park, whatever that is. The tourists attracted to the Falklands are not looking for luxury hotels, casinos and such like trash.

Again you try to equate money with class. The Colombian and Mexican drug barons have more money than you could imagine so you admire them as money=class
Mother Theresa,.Ghandi and Nelson Mandela were anything but rich,so,according to your twisted standards, they have no class.

You really need to grow up and stop acting like a petulant , jealous child.

Tourists will continue to visit the Falklands for the wildlfe and then on to Brasil, for some fun and enjoyment with their culture of song and dance.

If they have any sense, they will bypass Argentina as it seems to be populated by a bunch of moaning, whining gits, if this forum is anything to go by.!

    @15 Clyde

Arbour Park is the name of the apartment complex in Tempe Arizona, that Sussie used to brag about. He insisted she was living the high life there, until it was revealed that it was a drug and cockroach infested slum, LOL

At that point he was “ making easy money in the casino” in Vegas, suddenly.

He was condemned for being shallow and then changed his persona to that of Precocia, 2012, and now Adorrible...

Still adding zero to any conversation, still professes to be a woman, and still obsessed with anal sex.

What an embarrassment he is. :-D

Pull your head out of your arse and take a look around you at the real world.

No colonies anymore just a de-colonisation committee that will also soon be dead and gone, just like the colonial era.

Argentina is not going to be allowed to colonise the S Atlantic, against the wishes of the inhabitants.

That time is long past, soon you will be too busy with Patagonian (and/or other regional) independence movements, to worry about outside Argentina.

This is how the world is today.

Continually reciting the same old rubbish is not going to change that.

I believe the Governor and Westisbest are correct. Tourism will be one of our mainstays long after the oil has started to recede in 20 or 30 years. Oil will be the conduit for wealth generation in the short-term but that money will have to go a long way for a long time. It must be spent wisely on long-term sustainable infrastructure, and tourism is one of several obvious options.

I also like and support the idea that has been mentioned in the media on several occasions. That is for the construction of a world-class university that specialises in marine and antarctic sciences. Something along the lines of the wonderful Australian one.

“Just look at any web page concerning the decolonization committee of United Nations refers to are a colony. No one country. ”

    Raúl,

The official title of the decolonisation committee is:

The Special Committee on the Situation with regard to the Implementation of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence of Colonial COUNTRIES and Peoples (my capitals)

    En español:

Comité Especial encargado de examinar la situación con respecto a la aplicación de la Declaración sobre la concesión de la independencia a los PAÍSES y pueblos coloniales.

They referred to as colonial countries in UNGA resolutions 1514 and some others.

A country and an independent sovereign state aren't always the same thing. Most countries are independent, but several are not.

You claim “We must tell the truth” - try it for once.

Resolution 2065 is NON-binding whereas Resolution 502 of April 1982 is BINDING and yet Argentina did not abide by it.

The UN Resolution 2065 talks about FRIENDLY RELATIONS and was therefore invalidated by the Argentine attack on the Falkland Islands, an AGRESSIVE RELATION.

It is good to see that Falkand Islands Government is making long term plans to secure the Island's future prosperity. The revenue garnered from oil production will help kick start other economic activities like increased tourism and enhanced air links with the rest of the world will make the Islands more accessible to all .
The Falkland Islands sound like a wonderful place to visit and a trip there is on my travel agenda.

    From this week's Penguin News:

The following is a copy of a letter
    sent to the Stanley Badminton
    Club following their participation
    at the Brazil International
    Gustavo Prata Badminton Cup.
We want to thank the participation
of athletes of the Falkland Islands
    in this event.
    All were impressed with the
    joy, hospitality and generosity of
    the Falklands Team.
We hope to see them at the 28th
    International in Sao Paulo next
year and also in other tournaments
    around the world
    I, in particular, was very
    impressed with the Falkland
Islands and maybe next year I’ll
make a trip to learn more about
    your country.
For me it will be a great
    pleasure to meet the Falkland
Islands and also be able to review
    them ...after all Brazilians now
    consider you the Falkland Islands
    as great friends.

Oil and gas are non renewable resources, in other words they eventually run out, kaput, no more. Tourism is a renewable resource, in other words sustainable in time, does not run out.

This is a fairly simple concept, it is seen even in our country, witness Neuquén, Chubút, Santa Cruz, all oil and gas producing provinces that invest heavily in tourism!!!!!

As Simon @27 says oil and gas will run out one day and hopefully by then Argentina will stop bothering the Islanders.

I can see a great future for.........................in the Islands to succeed oil and gas it, other than tourism as an industry

    Work out the blank-its obvious.

Oh, and Argentina have not paid UK back yet for the type 42 destroyers, you know, the ones that ran away to port in the Falklands war.

Not paying back that money is technically theft.

The infrastructure a tourist industry would bring, the port facilities the oil industry will bring, combined with the location will make the Islands the natural gateway to the Antarctic.

That will bring a boom all of its own, lasting for some time.

@24 I'm sure Think will have read your input and, having translated it into Spanish, sent it topresidencia@hbadarg.com.ar. There is no doubt that Gaston Harkes is the man responsible for this latest failure of Argentinian diplomacy and he deserves to be outed as such. On the other hand some of us would have him lauded as a sporting hero. Take your pick.

Almost half way through October now JB. Can't wait for early November to find out about that early Christmas present you keep promising us. Any more hints?
