This has always been a problem with the Tories, the thing is that there's no real alternative to them at the moment so change has to come from within the party. I can't see that happening any time soon, though, which is a shame as they really aren't as bad as many people would paint them to be.

Yes they are!! labour were and are a bunch of half-witted incompetence. when they had finished f**king up this country, they handed over the reins to Came-moron and his little b*tch Nick Clegg so that they could “have a go” at running this country even further into the ground!!!

Oh please!! we have already had one veretan tory minister calling the POLICE “plebs”...... Me thinks that if they hold the police in such high regard, what do they really think of us “Ordinary” people. I can't wait for another “cash for questions” scandal or another “Ministers and prositutes” scandal or another “expenses” scandal......

Oh the list goes on and on!!!!

I think Norman Tebbit said it all when he called them “this dog of a government”.....and he is Conservative!!!

Britons should decide which one is between two options !

    1) passing to Republic to have higher dignity.?
    2) continue with present royalist regime going to bust.?

    @3 tooldtodieyoung

I agree with Boovis on this one.

Just what would've been your plan to save the economy?

Face it, when the coalition government took over, they found the financial situation far worse than they had been led to believe by the previous government. (no doubt stretching the truth in the hopes of getting re-elected).

Yes things are bad, but not nearly as bad as 1978 when the whole country was taken to the edge of bankruptcy by the Labour government.

When the Tories took over in 1979, inflation was rampant at around 17%, and unemployment was sprialling out of control, not least because of the actions of many of the extremely militant trade unions, some of which were being paid by the USSR to destabilise the country.

We went through some really tough times then, by comparison this is nothing.

This seems to me to be the way things work.

Labour government get into power and go on a spending spree. They do introduce some good things, but never seem to budget for them and the costs spiral out of control. The economy then goes tits up, so the electorate vote in the Tories instead.

The Tories are then left with the unenviable task if bringing the country back from the edge, and have to make cuts in spending to bring the national debt under control. People hate them for it, even though they're only doing it for the good of the country.

Eventually, the Tories get it all under control and balance the books. Then the electorate vote Labour again, and the cycle restarts.

To quote Margaret Thatcher: the main problem with socialism is that you will eventually run out of other peoples money.

No one likes cuts. Not even the Tories. Don't you think for once they'd like to be portrayed as the good guys instead of the bad guys who cut spending?

Perhaps we need to change the way we vote, and limit the terms of a serving Prime Minister to 2 terms, then the party picks a new leader and the country goes back to the polls. Will it work? I don't know.

Ok, so we are agreed then, we've swapped “bad” for “worse” If the Tories “don't like cuts” then why are they set on running the country into the ground?

If they don't want to be seen as the “bad guys” then don't act like the bad guys..... Simple.

“The Tories are then left with the unenviable task if bringing the country back from the edge, and have to make cuts in spending to bring the national debt under control”

but only cuts that keep the poor, poor and the rich, rich. Like their outrageous solution to the family allowance question which meant that a couple BOTH earning £47,000 a year each would still get the payment, but a single parent earning £48,000 a year, would not.

Oh yeah, and what did Matt Johnson say?

This is the place, where pensioners are raped, and the heart is being cut from the welfare state

The votes been passed and the lords been praised, but the wars on the television will never be explained.
all the bankers getting sweaty beneith their white collars as the pound in our pockets turns into a dollar

The super rich collapsed the financial system in 2008 and only survived due to a bailout by the rest of us. Finance scammers and salestrash do not create wealth. They skim the fruit of other people's labor. The truth is that a whole bunch of those guys belong in federal prison because of the scamming that lead to the 2008 collapse. The system will not heal till they end up there.

Yet you have failed to say how you would've solved the financial problems facing the UK.

You see it wasn't just about the recession, you see Labour had borrowed money and spent it, then borrowed more then spent that too. So when the recession hit there was little in the way of reserves.

So tell me, just how would you have run the economy? Borrowed more money? Made some cuts, if so where?

It's easy to criticise when you don't have to make the hard choices.

I have been a Conservative voter all my life until the last election when I did not vote at all.

I knew Cameron was a bad 'un before he got elected to lead the party.

He has never had a real job or any real life experience and this goes for most of the cabinet of either party of this damnable coalition.

What is desperately needed is a REAL leader, one who can bring the electorate with them to tackle the very serious problems left by New Labour and the cnut Brown.

Some have suggested Boris but as far as I can see he is another Cameron with a tickling stick.

Ever noticed they don’t like the photographs of all of them ex-Eton, etc, etc?

It does concern me that the country I so admired as I was growing up is now a refuge for the dregs of the EU and a bunch of Islamists hell bent on getting rid of ALL the non-believers and this bunch still have not understood the threat.

In what way has the UK experienced anything different,in principle, from the rest of Europe and the USA.
What the current crowd did was to deflate in a global recession.Who do they expect to create demand for the economy to begin to grow again.South America is one place they have focused on.Like when Cameron went to Brasil and left almost emptyhanded. The capitalist economy put you where you are and it will take you out.Why do you blame government.Didnt the borrowing fuel the economy.Didnt you all live beyond your means.Didnt you all borrow as well and not save.Didnt you give to charity(multiple charities that spent outside of the UK)money that you had borrowed.Take responsibility for yourself or are you going to blame the 1m youths that are on benefit for all the failures.

In the 30s we avoided a recession by building our way out,
You will find the British ordered and built many ships in the 30s,

    Why can’t it work now,

    We need ships,
We need railways, we need roads, we need power stations ,
We need lots,, and all it takes is two very simple things,
1, a decent government who puts its people first,
    2, investment, investment , investment,
New or upgraded railways and trains, rebuild and upgrade the roads and motorway network,
Build more ships for the navy and maritime forces, at least one hundred ships,
Creating employment for millions, new ship yards modern to compete with the Koreans, new steelworks, ect ect

Invest, after all, it only take money.?????????

The Brits don't like it when there is justifiable criticism. They wonder how others know about their dirty washing. They still think in their souls that they are superior and it is difficult for them to think of themselves as average, let alone broken. But they are broken.Puppets of the USA is all they are.

I know this not to be the case for most British people, Yul.

And as for 'average', what are you measuring?
On most criteria the UK punches well above its weight
... and I consider myself to be, individually, neither a lackey of the USA nor merely average.

Having said that, many people think that older people are so less-than-average that they are virtually non-existent.
As Dylan Thomas said, we educated oldies should shout our beliefs:
“Do not go gentle into that good night,
    Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light ..”

Oh that's easy, I wouldn't have borrowed 50Bn from the bank in the first place..... and then Gordon Brown used it to knock what?? 2.5% off VAT to encourage everyone to keep spending??

Nice job Gordy, Nice job!!! There were Economists queuing up to say that :-

1/ it didn't stand a snowballs chance in hell of working ( and they were right )

    and

2/ It would only cause more problems later on ( and they were right )

Funny that..... With the benefit of hindsight you could see the logic behind that decision. He knew he wasn't going to get voted back in again so why the hell not? leave it for the other guys to clean up.

Then Came-moron steps up with his little b*tch Nick Clegg and says “I know that Labour made a mess and I know I have to clean it up so here's my plan, I'll take the money out of the pockets of the people who really do need it and I'll ask the rich for.........nothing”

    New Labour? same old Conservatives!!!

The idea that Labour had was still to cut back but to do it more slowly, so as not to strangle economic growth. Yes, it would have taken longer to get control of the debt but it would have been easier for the public to stomach and, also, not have such a great impact on the economy.

So to answer you question. Yes. Anyone standing on the edge of this mess, staring into the black hole of financial chaos would have to make cuts, one way or the other.

Did Labour do the right thing in taking that loan? NO!!
Has the coalition done the right thing by imposing such drastic cutbacks? NO
For me, the long term payback is the answer and not this sink if you're poor, swim if you're rich approach.

28# Geoff.Good to see you still watching, and as you will have seen, there are some crass posts. And the Brits and Yanquis are as crass as any.
Obiviously Geoff, a remark like Brits don't like justifiable criticism, individually, there would be exception, both in certain individuals and in cases. But all the insults aimed at Argentinians and in some cases South Americans by,in particular, though not exclusively,Brits, are apparently ok.But when it's the other way,and the corruptions and failures in the recent past in the UK,are the issue the Brits don't like it.
In my view the less powerful, such as the more experienced but not currently up to date people, are entitled to their say and their share. In a democratic society it is the people who vote not their money.
