Argentina has started a major diplomatic campaign in an attempt to deny success to the Falkland Islands March referendum on its nationals’ political status, fearing the negative international repercussions for its sovereignty claims over the disputed Islands. Read full article

Looks like Argentina is desperate.
Nov 26th, 2012 - 07:30 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Yes, this is pretty desperate, particularly following Ban ki-moons comments a few weeks ago about self-determination.
Argentina has to, too all intents and purposes, tell people that they dont believe in the UNs position regarding self-determination...or dance around it to such an extent that any statement is pathetically weak.
Argentina would be much better off saying & doing nothing at all.... the way they are going they will generate far more attention FOR the referendum than the Islanders could themselves.
overall: dumb move bought about by desperation.
CFKs government is pretty desperate at the moment though.... too many self-inflicted wounds.
This propaganda is to take the focus away from the economy. Since her husband took control, the Argentine government has put on a show of economic success through smoke and mirrors. CFK's administration has been one huge disaster. Argentina has always had a great potential but is very poorly managed by the crooks that run the country.

Absolutely brilliant counter strategy if you’re an Islander, crass stupidity if you’re the Argy gov trying to minimise its impact.
Deliberately avoiding the point that the referendum is designed to show the world “what the Islanders want”, Argentina will be arguing they “don’t have the right to choose”, never mind what Ban-Ki Moon says.
No prizes for guessing who is going to win that argument, in the modern world.
Last throw of the dice for Argentina.

What an oxymoron using a political forum to inform of the “legitimate rights” of Argentina over the Malvinas Islands. It should be a very, very short message as they have none. It's all they have left as their tenuous legal claim is now extinguished as a result of their own neglect.

Nov 27th, 2012 - 12:08 pm - Link - Report abuse 0I'd like to say a very special Thank you to the argie government. In the United Kingdom, and in most parts of the civilised world, there is no bar on approximately 3,000 people getting together to express their views. It's called democracy and freedom of speech. Articles 2, 6, 19, 20, 21 and 28 of the UN Declaration of Human Rights apply. Where the matter at issue is the government of a territory, it may be called self-determination.
Nov 27th, 2012 - 12:45 pm - Link - Report abuse 0I applaud your attempt to get British political personalities and outstanding names to back your viewpoint. May I respectfully suggest that a propaganda campaign may not be sufficient. I would recommend personal visits to the individuals in question. Brown envelopes stuffed with at least 100 US$100 bills would make a suitable calling card. This is particularly important as interfering in a political activity in a British territory could see their next performance being in front of a judge.
I am a little surprised at the intention to take a tour around the Caribbean and Africa. Bearing in mind that such states tend to have similar laws. Will the top diplomats be visiting Ghana?
Can I also take this opportunity to mention that, if you are going to interfere in another country's internal affairs, it might not necessarily be a good idea to tell them that you're going to do it. This is usually classified as rank stupidity.
So the Argentines are trying to say that a UN backed, independently monitored referendum ISN'T legal, because they say so?

@81 No Mate! There was a post after post 79 made by captain piss, but it vanished by the time i had submitted my response. You know, as much as i like them removing troll posts, i'd prefer it if they just put deleted and under the posters name TROLL, to save the rest of use from embarassesment
Nov 27th, 2012 - 09:41 pm - Link - Report abuse 0I think the name was deleted....I've been complaining not only about the multi names from the same email addresses and IP's, but also the simular names of real posters. I feel the just need to eliminate sussie and all her names permanently
Nov 27th, 2012 - 09:59 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Captain Poppy like I said Granted they could of done it in a much better way, infact just about any way would of been better and I agree compensation is due and the artificial cap on prices does have an effect, but when a company takes out of your economy far more than it puts in financially and will not change its way what is left that you can do. And yes some companies do deserve to be nationalised for the greater good if it is failing to deliver such an important strategic reserve. I agree with the principle here just not the execution.

Nov 28th, 2012 - 12:51 am - Link - Report abuse 0It is a great campaign, it will show the world what a bunch of repressive, anti democratic idiots run argentina.
@91 being a kirchnerite i thought you were supposed to support democracy!
Nov 28th, 2012 - 01:13 am - Link - Report abuse 0So, essentially Argentina is saying Not only do we not recognise these people's right to determine their own future, but we are also giving a small window into how things would be if we somehow took over the islands.
Nov 28th, 2012 - 03:29 am - Link - Report abuse 0Even if they did steal the islands, the people there would just put up a pro-independence representative to vote for in the next election, vote for that person, then leave Argentina as is every land's right to do so. Either way, the argies are not getting the islands.
@89 Totally agree with you mate, though i think overall, the comment boards needs permenant moderaters, but then that would mean someone that was not biased or took either side, to allow freedom of expression and speech. Am all for the agries having their say, as not only can some of them make good debates they can be some that are downright haliarious with their comments and the piss they have taken out of them as a result. Though its easy to identify the trolls, as their the ones making false accusations of people using multiple usernames when infact it is themselves and banning their IP address is the best way of stopping them using the same computer, let alone email account, to create various usernames.

Nov 28th, 2012 - 11:27 am - Link - Report abuse 0I think when the world sees just what they are campaigning against, they will once again be digging a bigger hole for themselves. It's almost hard to imagine the argentines making themselves look more stupid.......but they have a campaign in the works to remedy that.

Nov 28th, 2012 - 01:42 pm - Link - Report abuse 0But then theirs the ones that don't contribute anything, post the same accusations on each post. Spend 10 hours a day pressing the refreash button and responding to each post made that is not theres, with irrelevant rubbish. And thens theirs the ones that think thay have found the holy grail and celebrate by copying and pasting their posts in every single recent article, sometimes upto 3-4 times each article. They are the ones am targetting along with those that try to disguise their usernames to look similar to legitimate users as attempt to discredit said user! So its the above ones am, targetting as trolls.
How thick a bubble do you have to be to come up with an idea that is this college-educated stupid? Also their SA support for the Argentine claim is mostly the equivalent of a roll call vote on a do-nothing piece of legislation that is done to symbolize party unity knowing full well that the bill will do nothing. In this case though, states want to be seen as democratic will see through this. Some of course will nod their heads hoping that no one but Buenos Aires and their bloc's neighbors will see but they know in the end that it is for nothing, self-determination and the UN charter rules. The people who matter and aren't bound by regional solidarity will see through this, (Argentina's neighbor's symbolic but empty support,) and the true desires of the Falklands' citizens who have already experienced the true face of Argentine rule and have continuously and passionately rejected it. A face that Argentina continues to celebrate with their 2 peso coin proudly commemorating their exporting of their Dirty War onto a free people who have never wanted anything to do with them. Heaven help them when the bubble pops.

Nov 28th, 2012 - 04:03 pm - Link - Report abuse 0It seems to be that Falkland Oil and Gas has abandoned further oil prospects regarding the horrible obtained results.
Nov 28th, 2012 - 05:35 pm - Link - Report abuse 0FOGL stocks prizes have plunged and due to high extraction costs (something is being shared with other oil cos. exploring around the island) is thinking about abandoning this endeavour.”
Going by family experience in Kazakhstan share prices are exceptionally volatile over the entire period of test drilling & exploration (even land-based) until a rock-solid well is drilled.. and remains volatile right up to extraction and commercial pumping.
From that its pretty obvious that the entire enterprise is high-risk, even more so given the location (South Atlantic) ..so the volatility of stock prices might not be the best means of judging the future (or even current) situation - they fluctuate so rapidly on the tiniest rumour.
Would it not be more surprising, and rather dubious, if all of these tests well came in with brilliant results all the time? Some of these drilling areas have to fail completely.
thats just one of the risks and why you need a lot of money and backing to risk it in any case.

Nov 28th, 2012 - 11:35 pm - Link - Report abuse 0No the IMO doesn't say that. Your batty Ambassador says that.
You seem to not understand that Argentina WAIVED its immunity on sovereign assets, which includes anything owned by the sovereign state of Argentina, including military vessels.
That means you gave your immunity up, away, deleted it, it no longer exists! Comprende?
And yet instead of trying to save Argentina's economy, and reputation on the international stage, your government instead tries to bully and intimidate 3,000 people because you want to steal their land and property.
In fact, your government is so scared of the words self-determination that they have foolishly said that the people of the Falkland Islands don't enjoy the same human rights as the other 7 billion people on the planet.
Further, your government erroneously states that they are an implanted population, yet they are the ONLY native population the Islands have EVER had, unlike Argentina, who has a huge implanted population that continues to oppress and subdue, even starve out, the true and native inhabitants.
This makes your government and its representatives all big lying hypocritical imperialist colonial dead beats, who won't pay your debts like a decent and honourable country would do.
Then your government cries that the world is picking on you for being lying hypocritical imperialist colonial dead beats, the label you La Campora trolls, peronists and Kirchenists seem to wear like a badge of honour, whilst the decent citizens of your country despair.
As I keep on saying

The whole thing is hilarious.
Nestor's dad was a Swiss German and raise in Patagonia. That is well known for where the Nazi's went when Peron smuggled and hid the Nazi's for their millions. Seems the poor of Argentina do not care are long as the government tosses the crumbs to the poor.
Dec 02nd, 2012 - 03:19 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Looks like the old botox queen might be under estimating the commonwealth read below.
Dec 02nd, 2012 - 03:43 pm - Link - Report abuse 0There are many good reasons why Commonwealth Caribbean countries should not support Argentina in this dispute with Britain. First, the inhabitants of the Falklands have determined that they are British and wish to remain so. They have rejected the notion of being Argentinian. The right of self-determination, enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, is one that Commonwealth Caribbean countries have long upheld, and, indeed, is the basis on which each of them achieved their own political independence.
When Foreign Ministers of the 15-member countries of CARICOM and the Dominican Republic met Ministers of the British Government in January this year at the biennial UK-Caribbean Forum in Grenada, they collectively and rightly agreed: “To support the principle and the right to self-determination for all peoples, including the Falkland Islanders, recognising the historical importance of self-determination in the political development of the Caribbean, and its core status as an internationally agreed principle under the United Nations Charter”.
A second good reason not to support Argentina is that the facts of British settlement and sovereignty over the Falklands are well established. It is important to appreciate that an existing UN resolution on the Falklands does no more than call for negotiations to find a peaceful settlement to the dispute over sovereignty. Where the problem arises is: if both countries claim sovereignty why would either of them want to negotiate over what they consider to be their legitimate right? In any event, Britain has exercised sovereignty over the Falklands since 1765 and, properly, if Argentina disputes such sovereignty, it should take the matter to the International Court of Justice for arbitration. Argentina has declined to do so, while Britain has indicated its willingness on several occasions
Andy....I think asslips is getting tired of getting slapped in the courts. She may be looking at a 250 million to 1.3 billion dollar deposit from a Friday afternoon motion filed while waiting out the appeal process......lol
