Ghanaian government confirms the release of ARA Libertad
The Ghanaian government confirmed on Tuesday it would comply with the UN Law of the Sea court decision to release the Argentine navy flagship ARA Libertad, impounded in Tema since October 2, over a debt dispute between a US hedge fund and the Argentine government. Read full article

When you take 100 billion dollars from people and steal 70 billion by only giving back 30 billion.....yes....argentina is incapable of embarrassment. She reneges on treaties, default on contractual debts, steals from her own citizens, calls people of argentina liars about crime, she gets what she deserves. Ghanian judge was dealing with an issue that was pertinent to his remit.
Does the law of Ghana allow the claimant the excise of a judgement under contract law from a foreign jurisdiction? Which it did. Argentina's claim was under the law of the Sea was that its waiver was null and void. It appears that the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea gave more weight to the potential of conflict between the two countries than any other issue. Beside this was new law to be decided as this same issue had not been adjudicated before.
Victory for Argentina, tissue for the thief Mr. Singer and the crying Brits on this site.

@14 This story was very good value though. It made the Argentines look like completely incompetent fools inside and outside of court. Their legal discussion was woeful, and to be fair if it wasn't for the likelihood of conflict (people on board shooting the dock-workers), then I very much doubt that it would have ever been released.

The Ghanaian government will query the decision of the court, and will want something in writing, so they can't be seen to be liable. When they get it then Libertad will presumably be free to go. Whether it'll be in good enough shape to make it back across the Atlantic is another story. I think it's generated all of the goodwill that the trip was ever going to.

It'll be the first full size fleet carrier (as opposed to the through-deck-cruisers/light carriers/ASW carriers/whatever the Navy has to call them to get the money out of the politicians) that the UK has launched in more than 50 years.
It's also the biggest (at least in terms of displacement) carrier that we've ever built by a considerable margin.
The Argentinian flagship, Libertad - though it is a ship-rigged sail training vessel - does have four cannons - 47mm salute guns.

No cats/traps so we await the F35B Stovl to be delivered after some bureaucrat decided ditching Harriers early was a good idea. I just hope it isn't another F111. Overpriced, delivered late and not as good as it was meant to be. The Harrier is still a good aircraft, even after all these years, as the US Marine Corps well know.

Well this is a good end to what could have been a disaster. As much as I enjoy the endless pursuit of Paul Singer to harass the Argentinian government, I felt very sad for the officers and crew stuck in port over the mad empress without clothes stupidity.

They facilitated the Law of the Sea ruling, and abided by its provisional decision - happily getting shot of the troublesome boat and its gun-toting crew.
Quite frankly, I think the crew were lucky that the Ghanian military did not respond to the Argentinian gun-toting at the baliffs on Ghana's sovereign territory.

La Nacion and C5N have confirmed that ARA Espora has sailed from South Africa and is headed towards the Brazilian coast where it will join ARA Libertad to escort it into Mar Del Plata Naval base on January 9, 2013.
