You can name it what you want. The Antarctic territory is governed by International Treaty and is no ones property. Britain has again made an unilateral move to provoke Argentina and it's neighbors. This section of Antartica is claimed by Chile as well. I suggest that the Argies name the entire section they claim as Tierra Argentina, or Tierra Eva Peron,or tierra de Pochito (nickname for Juan Peron).

The argentines should name the same part of Antarctica “Queen Sweet Potato” after their glorious leader.

Nobody owns Antarctica, so countries can name areas how they like.

Fascinating legal anecdote for the English to nosh on and subsequently muse.

The Antarctic Treaty expressly indicates that no new claims shall be made following ratification and entry in effect (which was in '59). Furthermore, it implies that no claims are of a “mortmain” nature. In other words, if the entity which made the claim ceases to exist, any ensuing or succeeding “descendant” cannot have such claim deeded, remised, or bequeathed.

In other words, the English better start praying, laying oblations, and burning incenses propitiating the higher power(s) to keep the UK intact for the next 40-50 years, until the treaty could be abolished, changed, or rescinded.

If the UK breaks up within that time frame, their claim instantly “vanishes” and “England” would have to RE-SIGN the treaty (in which case they cannot make a new claim since the treaty prohibits this), or refuse to sign it in which case the treaty nations can evict them out of Antarctica for not abiding by the rules of engagement.

LOL... I have extra rosaries for anyone who requests them.

The 16 countries of which she is queen are known as Commonwealth Realms, and their combined population is 128 million.

Tobers, i underestand about relition of people, feeling and believing in god. But do you really think god gave divine rights to her?. Or that she has a better blood than you?. In part, i underestand the cultural importance you give to the monarchy, but really? god save the queen?. Will you give your life for her or will you give your life for your nation?. And if you should choose between one thing or the other, will you give your life for her or for your nation?.
Evita, Kirchner, Peron, God, Alah, people can change those in a bit. Changing relition or voting for a different candidate.
Andy65, to tell our former president or our current government NAZI, only shows your ignorance on the matter and your lack of culture. The kirchner couple are defined by their anti-militaristics stance and their defense of human rights alowing the trials to suspects of state terrorism from the last military dictatorship, he retired the pictures of Videla ( dictator, political ally of the uk) from all military offices, etc.
Anyway the fact she is the queen of many other nations my stance is the same. She is cold, becouse she was raised that way, she is old, becouse she is, she is ugly, well is my perception of her, and she is a b...ch, becouse even many of your country men think the same way as i do, ask Lady di.

I was waiting for this story to land on the Argies with amusement. Of course they are right in that most of South America won't recognise the name. But what this should demonstrate to Argentina is that we actually don't give a stuff what they think. Whether they like it or not, our reach and projection of power around the globe is considerable and our Queen is the head of state of 16 other countries across the globe. The Republic of Argentina is utterly insignificant.

Unfortunately for you Marcos the muppet the British are widely respected and whilst the non country that is Argentina may not recognize it, it really doesn't matter since everyone else will.

Argentina is ignored anyway on the basis it thinks some fantasy islands exist called malvinas that nobody else recognizes and then it goes one step further to to claim they own these islands yet never in history have they ever owned these islands.

    Argentina - a wonderful fantasy!

Anyone want to bet me that these islands will be acknowledged by other countries?

The British , we Ozzies and the Norwegians undertook the early heavy lifting, (exploration and development) of Antartica a long, long time ago. At no small cost in lives and a lot of heroics along the way. This was done with the blessing of the then government of Argentina. (They were much more sensible back then). Now despite the proximity of Antartica to Argentina, if it had been left to you lot, the place would still be undiscovered! So its no good whining and getting a resntment today, Argentina has well and truly missed the boat on this one.

    @55

The weak case in both Chile and Argentina's claim are that they made their claim some 40 years after the UK - and at no point during the time from 1908 to their own claims did they dispute the UK claim; their citizens recognised the UK's claim by purchasing fishing and whaling rights from the UK and that the UK and of course as soon as Chile and Argentina made their claims in the 1940s, they were immediately disputed by the UK. The Papal Bull claim is just that - Bull. Antartica is a seperate continent, not an extension of South America. The Reina Batata will have to try a bit harder - and if this ever went to the ICJ, the UK have a far stronger claim to sovereignty.

However, the most laughable claim I have seen is the Argentine claim for South Georgia that is based on the fact that an Argentine company paid for a licence from the UK to base a processing plant their - so therefore does that mean Germany can claim soverignty over argentina because they have a Mercedes factory in the country? LMAO

    Queen Elizabeth Land - HUZAARRR

In British Antarctic Territory - HUZAARRR

God save the Queen - HUZAARRR

    @26 Nostrolldamus The 3rd
Fundamentally flawed, because even if Scotland (for sake of argument) left the UK, the UK would continue as an entity unchanged in all legal respects.

Just as an independent Scotland would have to negotiate membership of the EU as a new entrant, whereas the UK would not.

    @55 José Malvinero
The Brits were there (and claiming uninhabited territory, 1908 was a consolidation of existing separate British claims from much earlier), long before you finished conquering your way down S. America to get to be our neighbours in that part of the world.

We have more right to be there, than you have to be in Patagonia.

If you had any idea how hilarious it sound to the Brits when you call US invaders in that part of the world, you would not say it I assure you.

The simple truth is that you have run out of S. America to steal from the Indians, so you think you’ll take British territory instead, the difference is that unlike Atahulpa the British have more than just bows and arrows with which to defend their territory.

Some interesting arguments and fallacies floating around.

The first one. The UK doesn't cease to exist should Scotland gain independence. So it won't affect it's claim to Antartica. Russia after all inherited the USSR's rights under the treaty.

Anyway guess who will be the Queen of the Kingdom Scotland.

I know Australia, New Zealand, Norway and France will update their maps as they have territory in Antartica and will have little issue with this.

Actually most countries will. Except for Argentina and maybe Chile. Queen Elizabeth is after all one of the most respected heads of state in the world.

You don't actually say anything really. You attack but don't actually state a position. It's very weak! Where's your rebuttal? Your counter claim? Your argument? Your facts?

So where exactly is my “pure sycophantic fawning”? Was it my comment on international law? That the Queen will still be the Queen of Scotland even after independence?

Elizabeth II is also the Queen of Australia and New Zealand, Norway is a monarchy and France has a very close relationship with the UK, so I stand by my claim.

”Planet Windsor (formerly known as the earth)“. Hyperbolic much?

”Pathetic self indulgence and small mindedness, and embarrassing on the world stage”

Yes you are indeed pathetic, self indulgent and small minded. And pretty much an embarrassment for your own country as far as I can see. And you just let the whole world see it too.

Trouble is that his “opinion “is not just that of the “average Joe”.

It is quite clear from this that the terms of Scotland’s membership of the EU, would have to be agreed (with the rest of the (cash strapped) EU).

And you prove my point, that for all the economic reasons you describe Scotland would be expected to be a net contributor.

Be in no doubt that is what this is all about, with the Eurocrats like “no way Pedro”.

With the exit of Scotland from the UK, the EU contribution from the UK would automatically be reduced.

Zero sum game at best, if possible they will want more, you will have to work hard to get them to agree to the same total income FOR THEM.

The UK as a whole, including Scotland, is a net contributor to the EU, according to EU and UK figures so you are most likely false on that one.

Barroso has no say on anything to do with membership applications. He can't reject or veto any apps, so in the long run his opinion is ultimately worthless when compared to legal experts who set up many EU laws that agree with Scotland's stance.
Anyway, I would rather see Scotland only in the Euro Trade Agreement like Norway.

No question the UK is, and would continue to be, a contributor in the EU albeit at a lower level.

Question is what would Scotland be???????

Barroso didn’t claim to have any say over applications, he simply said Scotland would have to make one.

Whilst I personally greatly dislike the man and most of what he stands for, to say that his opinion is “ultimately worthless” in this scenario is frankly naive in the extreme.

He will have had legal advice of his own, and you can be sure (because he has said, what he has said) he is not the only high level Eurocrat thinking that way.

“legal experts who set up many EU laws” – Who is that then?

“that agree with Scotland's stance” – What is that stance then?

Doesn’t look like you will get the option of a Euro Trade Agreement. No idea whether is would work for you, but it would be sensible to at least consider it.

”The Antarctic Treaty expressly indicates that no new claims shall be made following ratification and entry in effect (which was in '59). Furthermore, it implies that no claims are of a “mortmain” nature. In other words, if the entity which made the claim ceases to exist, any ensuing or succeeding “descendant” cannot have such claim deeded, remised, or bequeathed.”

That's a very interesting story you have there, it's complete crap. But interesting because you act like such an intellectual.

When the treaty was signed, the British empire(the entity it was at the tme) seill held vast areas of Africa under it's power. The empire(entity that signed the treaty) broke up, and became the UK, yet to this day still did not relinquish it's rights to this treaty.

What you have said in that post is utter horse dung. The treaty like all is signed for the reigning reagent. And until the royal family is dissolved the “entity” that signed the treaty is still intact.

I like HM the Queen and think having a non political head of state is a good thing. I support naming part of Antartica after her. However, it is mostly symobolic as the area in question is remote and unlikely to be developable due to the extreme conditions.

I could'nt care less if any other nation decided to re-name the bits of Antartica they claim, either. That includes Argentina. If they honestly wanted to name parts of the continent they have a presence in after national heroes, that would be fine by me.

However, to prevent chaos, there should be an independent body who monitors this. I had a quick look before wriyting this post, but could'nt see who would be the responsible authority for Antartica, unless it falls under the remit of the Antartic treaty system.

    Any thoughts anyone?

    The BBC Radio 4 announced that there are just three research stations in Queen Elizabeth Land;
poor as the BBC is, a few second on Google would show that there are a variety of national stations within the sector being operated by a variety of countries.
British reporting of the matter is poor and partisan.
The worthy status of these research stations will remain unchanged even though the name of the continental sector on the world's maps has, from 2012/3, changed.

I can't believe you just compounded your mistake.

    Antarctica is 14,000,000km2
The British Antactic Territory is 1,709,400km2
Queen Elizabeth Land (QEL) is 437,000km2

So QEL is only 25.5% of British Antarctic Territory or 3% of the entire continent.

As I stated before, its northern boundary is the Ronne Ice Shelf and Coates Land. It DOES NOT include Palmer or Graham Land on the Antarctic Peninsula.

Find an actual map of QEL and then compare it to your map or list.

    116 Anglotino & 115 GeoffWard:
FCO probably geo-crafted QEL boundaries to exclude currently-active foreign bases. Apparently now-abandoned Arturo Parodi base (Chile) might be inside QEL boundary, while Sobral (Argentina) appears to be sited just outside.

Not sure about Amundsen-Scott Polar Base, as it is said to be shifting, but if A-S base photo aligned North-South, probably just outside QEL as well as British Antarctic Territory and QEL boundary at True Geographic South Pole .

FCO Announcement: “Because of the unique status of Antarctica, which is covered by an international Treaty that suspends territorial sovereignty, it is for other countries to decide whether or not they will officially recognise this name.”
    - so I'm definitely going to ask Canadian government to recognize QEL name. Right now, along with several other Commonwealth Countries, we do have several Queen Elizabeth Parks in Canada but QEL in BAT has a cachet far beyond a park.

Nice touch to name the land after the Queen, typical of Argentina to complain. No doubt such dominions are really just reflecting a country's efforts in science and surveying in that area and nothing may come from sovereignty but as with all land masses, exploration and discovery are prizes in themselves.

Indeed, not a hard and fast rule for labelling as Union Jack or the Union Flag.

Similar for Australia and Canada, the common official term is the “Union Jack”, but in Canada since 1964, known as the “Royal Union Flag”, differentiating it from the British colonial Canadian Red Ensign, used by the Royal Canadian Navy and adopted by all Canadian military services to carry into battle and the country during WWII.
