Why would Clarin divest its most profitable assets? If push comes to shove they should concentrate on ensuring the highest return on capital employed in the assets that remain. It could eventually be good for shareholders if Clarin uses it as an opportunity to focus on what they are best at.

On the political side it is clearly a law brought in by the president to shut them up.

the housewife ck has to stick her colt back into the holster - and make a counter-appeal. in the meantime clarin can tell the people how ck wanted to hang them.
in our nazi times around 1933 to 1945 we never had such a pistol girl in the government.
but judge Alfonso must be questioned if he is quite clear in his brain. why didn´t he give his first sentence free for appeal immediately? possibly ck had cut off the microphone...

Simon68 made a good point about this. The president claims that Clarin and some all powerall kingmaker in Argentina with power to topple a government at a whim. During the last elections, Clarin was at the height of its power and the election was a cakewalk for CFK. As such, this is purely a move to disband an organisation which is capable of being a focal point for any organisation which may arise in the future...

@4 agreed. She's basically doing the same as Mao when he closed all the tea-shops, because that was where he had spent all his time professing marxism, and academics met to discuss anti-government topics. He was simply removing the tools that he used to rise, and would allow others to rise against him.

I think this is purely a personal vendetta of CFKC's. Her 'beloved' Nestor granted the licences she wants to revoke. Her paranoia is rampant.

“..... a media law that would force the conglomerate to sell some of its most profitable assets.”

What right does the Government have to auction off the assets of a private company?
Even with this 'law', the company has the right to dispose of its own assets.
And why should the law specify that *only the most profitable* must be sold off?

This is terrible law and terrible application of political power. The judiciary should - rightly - distance itself from such blatant political manipulation.

@7 the law basically needs to allow KFC to force Clarin to sell the assets to some La Campora terroristas for next to nothing. Then La Campora can start their own TV show called 'FEAR Quebracha' which will be piped into schools 24/7.

In return, the frump will probably get extra dollars to offshore and her vendetta will be complete.

Hi Think. Weren't you claiming this as a CFK victory on Saturday ? Another example of CFK and her “successful lawyer” career which made her millions... Pre-judging Griesa and not thinking there might be an appeal in this case shows razor sharp legal skills don't you think ?

Does make you wonder where her millions came from though doesn't it? Could it be Nestor and the 30 mortgages he was allowed to take out during military rule, or could it be the *odd* penny has gone astray from public finances. Perish the thought Think, perish the thought !

Where are our argies and malvinistas? Why aren't they here explaining how this is all part of CFK's “cunning” plan? Is she more concerned about getting kicked out of the IMF, the G20 and any other financial organisation?

    I say:
    Paraphrasing your words..........:
This is a partly a move to disband an organization that has been the focal point for every Military Coup endured by my Country during the past sixty (60) years .....
High time to disband such an organization......

Why do you think Nestor Kirchner was such a supporter of Clarin, granting the licences that are now being revoked by CFKC?

    Dec 19th, 2012 - 06:00 pm - Link - Report abuse 0
  • Shed-time

@12 same reason why Nestor et al were massive fans of YPF being sold off to the public (making them $520mil), which was summarily revoked by the frumpmeister who claimed such an idea was against Nestor's masterplan (earning them $Nmil).

    am i close?.

You know, I wonder, Nestor was very cosy with Clarin owners with regular amiable lunches, lucrative licences being given to them etc. Do you think it might have been possible that Nestor was operating against CFKC behind the scenes? I mean, he needed her to stand in for him for one term but he certainly didn't want her to be so popular that he couldn't take up the reins again. That was always the plan until Nestor died suddenly. Maybe he was complicit in the Clarin backlash against CFKC when she made that disastrous decision to take on the farmers?
And Fat Max was only a very minor player until Nestor died and he and his merry band of thugs were unleashed. Then CFKC sacked just about everyone Nestor trusted.
That family was very divided. There is something slightly looney but very personal about CFKC's obsession over bringing Clarin down.

But there hasnt been a military coup in the last 30 yrs ... Seems a bit over dramatic. In a country as unstable as Argentina 30 years is a long time. Let it go. Things have moved on.

At this rate, it doesn’t look like this is going to be enforced this side of a re-re-election.

Shouldn’t there be another “per saltum” application sometime soon. The law that was supposed to end the endless delays!

Or can we expect more legislation soon, possibly involving oaths of loyalty!

Can any CFK supporter deny that? Thats the acid test to the legitimacy of this anti media law. The answer is quite simply that the gov. would NOT be pursuing this if it Clarin was supportive of them.

Just another day in filthy, disease-laden UK/Europe:

    http://en.mercopress.com/2012/12/19/schmallenberg-disease-hitting-lambs-and-calves-spreads-to-all-england-and-wales

Sure explains the brains of the European posters here... I wonder if they were born with one hemisphere, or just the brain stem.

Between the disease and inbreeding, then you wonder why all these mass shootings happen in Norway, France, Germany, Belgium, Italy, USA, etc...

I think it was necessary to explain the quality of the commentary by the antis.

Now that everyone understands the causes (European/North American mutants at large), then clemency and forbearance by us Argentines becomes a jot easier.

@29 I think you need to read 'The way of the argentine: the cult of the mullet' by Juan Peron and foreword by Adolf Hitler. It will show you that Argentines are pretty much the polar opposite of what you are routinely suggesting.

Firstly, they lack any kind of morality, diplomacy and are utterly without virtues. Talking about cattle on a thread showing authoritarianism at work isn't going to change anyone's mind on that front.

But all our kids come home alive from school, uni, or a fieldtrip to an island, and our farm animals have two eyes, four legs and a tail... and not two heads, four tails, and an eye.

@32 ... no they don't. Your brown kids starve outside their homes, the white kids either end up being press-ganged into becoming la campora terroristas or they get shot by police officers at a party.

I know you're told sunny stories in school, about Maximo delivering you to a socialist utopia, but the reality is simply that he's self obsessed and surrounded by a cult of personality.

Get over it, we all did.

Tell me Greek Yoghurt, when you truss fowl for the holidays up there, do you tie up the left leg with the middle leg, or the right leg to the middle leg? And then do you just seek out the ones with an extra pair of wings?

See here in Argentina we have really boring poultry, just two legs and two wings per bird.

The malls are full in Mendoza, we are the 6th largest wine producer on Earth, home of the world's largest hydro and eolic tech and industry company, have the two biggest bottled water companies in South America (villaviencio/eco de los andes), big ski resort industry, booming adventure tourism, highest summit on Earth outside Nepal/India, big oil production and a huge refinery plus huge proven future oil reserves, educated people from world-known eye institutes to nuclear sciences, large organic fruit industry, apiculture in the south, one of the top olive oil makers, garlic exporter, and the only province with a domestic airplane manufacturer.

Well diversified economy, and we haven't even touched our hard-mineral resources.

    Nice.

I'm pretty sure it'll have some garbled nonsense about him being born on a mountain and 13 rainbows appearing and all that. He just doesn't seem to want to talk about it, instead choosing to dress up his crime filled home as some kind of utopia.

    @11 Think

Point taken and I understand Clarin's role but why them was Nestor so willing to grant these extra licences, it is not as if they are from different political ideologies. Further more, since Nestor granted these licences the Kirchnerists have grown in power and popularity. The only thing I can point to is the farmers’ dispute. Is CFK going to prosecute Clarin for its role in helping the dictatorship? If not, why not?
