Admittedly we did only do this to annoy Argentina. But haven't you got better things to worry about? Your county is literally falling apart? And you are concerned about some ice?

The British Antarctic Survey is conducting research down the that provides insight in to the origins of life for the benefit of all of mankind. What would you be doing with it? Looting? Or nothing? What someone else has Argentina wants, it's like a four year old. It's only because it can see us playing with it, if we put it down Argentina would lose interest.

If Argentina hates imperialism so much it should return to the borders it enjoyed when it first claimed independence from Spain and abandon its imperial possessions.

I guess the naming of the Antarctic territory is meant to coincide with or celebrate the Diamond Jubilee and, in that sense, it is a nice gesture. Honestly, who cares about the name on a map - there will be no border controls, no signposts and no currency or infrastructure to manage (well, maybe a few stamps will be printed with British Antarctic Territory/ QE Land).
However, I can see it from the other point of view - why did it take over a century to make this re-naming.....
Ultimately, the sanctity of the Antarctic as an (almost) untouched wilderness is far too important to leave to nation states and should be administered by a multi-national scientific based organisation.

Oh the irony, Argentina has a special committee for renaming geographic features on the Falklands and, although it promised it would stop, still persists in using offensive toponymy associated with its 1982 invasion. This would the invasion that in true revisionist style it claims no one supported but they celebrate the invasion with a national holiday.

Argentina categorical rejects all British territorial pretensions in Antarctica but reaffirms their own territorial pretensions.

Why is it imperialistic for Britain to claim territory but not Argentina?

Argentina can name this area whatever they want. However I'm sure they take umbrage more so because more countries will recognise Queen Elizabeth Land than whatever they name.

Partly due to the dominance of English, partly due to the Commonwealth Realms and Commonwealth of Nations but mostly because nearly every country respects and admires the Queen.

Argentina have nothing to protest, simple as that!
at the end of the day if argentina wants all this land and surrounding islands that is british then they are going to have to annex them, otherwise keep crying,
but as modern history has shown annexing does not go down well with the international community.

So basically what Argentina is saying is that the UK -one of the world's leading nations on polar exploration -has no right to be on the continent or have any part of it.
Considering that Antarctica is a SEPARATE continent from South America, from where does Argentina's claims arise ?

@5 At what point in time did they become “people”?
@23 You have no idea what “diplomacy” means. Any more than you understand “honesty”, “integrity”, “respect” or “truth”.
@24 If you're going to rename anything, what's wrong with Whining Bitch Land? For hundreds of years, people will automatically think of CFK. You can then carry on and rename something closer to home. For Buenos Aires, I recommend Ground Zero. We'll be glad to do the rest. If you could arrange to be there, you could be immortalised. As a shadow on a wall.

For all our argie bloggers, misfits and repulsive, irrelevant slugs: See how much WE care what you think! Have you sent lots of copies of your letter of “protest”. It's always good to have reserves of paper suitable for use in the bog. We're thinking of renaming other places as well. Buenos Aires, for example, will become Ground Zero. Cordoba might become Aiming Point 1. Mar Del Plata could become Aiming Point 2. Rio Gallegos is being considered for El Lago Gallegos.

Argentina calls the British Territory of the Falkland Islands “las Malvinas” and refer to its principal township, Port Stanley, as Puerto Argentino and as far as I am aware Britain has never protested.

Now, Argentina protests us naming British Antartica “Queen Elizabeth Land” - meanwhile there is civil unrest in their country with mobs rioting and stealing from supermarkets.

“they have choosen a beautiful envelope to give your ambassador the protest.” (malen #23)

    Well, I think we all agree;
British politicians counter-attacked the Argentinians with a weapon of delightful subtlty.

Nobody was invaded, attacked or killed, but there is no doubt that the rapier-thrust of good, old fashioned diplomacy 'pierced the target and drew blood'.

We used to do it by symbolically raising a flag (always think of Eddie Izzard: “Yes, but do you have a flag?” ... as the Spaniards, Welsh and Italians inght have said to the Mapuche).

These days of electronic media and communications, it seems all we need to 'twist the tail' is an anodyne declaration of re-naming to celebrate a centenary.

Well done, Rt. Hon. Foreign Secretary Hague!

The answer to the UK naming this sector of BAT “Queen Elizabeth Land” should have been that CFK named the same sector of AAT “Nestor Carlos Kirchner Land”, this would have been a subtle answer to the British action. But no, our “expert” in foreign relations, Héctor Timerman, has to shout his stupidities from the house tops!!!!!!!

I'm sure the Amaicha, Calchaquí, Chocoana, Quilmes and Colla peoples were about as thrilled at the name 'Argentina' as the Falkland Islanders are today the (corrupted french) made up name 'Malvinas'. You might find the genocide and dispossession of the Falkland Islanders more problematic than the slaughter of those indigenous peoples. The Falkland Islanders have backup, don't forget it.

“QEL will only appear on British atlases, the rest of the world will keep on calling the international territory by its proper name, Antarctica.”

First off, no one has renamed Antarctica. The British has just named a small territory not the entire continent.

But you are wrong. I foresee the all Commonwealth countries will recognise this named area. There's another 52 countries. The EU will have no issue with this, so there's another 26 countries. Norway will too. I could go on, but there's 79 countries other than the UK.

    Stevie

You made a claim, I refuted that claim.

As to why countries would care. Well that's a question now. I'd say most wouldn't have an issue with this and hence they will have no issue incorporating the name.

The Queen is one of the oldest and longest serving head of state in the world. She is greatly admired and recognised for this. There is only one head of state currently serving longer and Thailand doesn't have any claims to Antarctica.

Her quiet and calm demeanour is a jarring opposite to the Argentine President and probably only adds to her appeal.

    Dec 23rd, 2012 - 12:43 am - Link - Report abuse 0
  • Stevie

So, the world would change their atlases because of your queen being old, I like your logic.

As long as the name isn't recognized by the UN, no atlases but the British one will incorporate that name, that much I can assure you.

    Dec 23rd, 2012 - 12:48 am - Link - Report abuse 0
  • Anglotino

The UN? Where do you people get your facts from?

But no the world won't just update their atlases because HM is old, but because she is respected. Also it helps that most countries don't stand to gain or lose regarding the matter so it is not controversial to all but a few countries..... or maybe just Argentina.

As for the UN! What the hell does the UN have to do with this? The UN doesn't control, manage or regulate Antarctica. The Antarctic Treaty System does. This isn't a UN body. And the UN definitely doesn't name or regulate naming of geographical features in Antarctica.

“no atlases but the British one will incorporate that name”. Why do you keep repeating his when you know you are wrong? Australia will incorporate it. New Zealand. Canada. You do realise HM is Queen of 16 countries don't you? Add in Norway and France who both have named parts of Antarctica and you have almost 10% of the UN recognising it already.

You're so wrong it is almost comical. You don't argue with facts but with emotions.

The first formal use of the name “Antarctica” as a continental name is attributed to the Scottish cartographer John George Bartholomew during the 1890's.

We just decided it was time to re-name a segment of it! :)

”“no atlases but the British one will incorporate that name”

The nations of New Zealand, Australia, France, Norway and the UK, all of whom support each-others claims on Antarctica will support this change. These nations territory make up all of the claimed territory in Antarctica.

The only two nations who do not agree on this territory are both Argentina and Chile, Whom can't agree on each-others claim either.

I'll believe you when I see a Norweigan, French or Australian map with that name incorporated. Until then, I'll stick to the international community's position on the matter.
Same as if Argentina would name a piece of Antarctica “Tierra de Maradona”, which would be just as childish.

“Categorical rejection to all British territorial pretension in Antarctica”.

“reaffirms its rights over what it describes the Argentine Antarctic Sector”.

And according to Stink, Argentina has already given this territory an Argentinian name.

So alright for Argentina to claim and name but not the British, when they do it it’s called:

“Imperialistic ambitions going back to ancient practices” and contrary to the spirit of peace and cooperation of the Antarctic Treaty.

And even a reference to article IV, which invalidates most of Argentina’s present claim to the territory, truly remarkable comment.

Pot kettle, sauce goose. Clearly intended for internal consumption, looks like they are being tough and is at the intellectual level of a nine year old.

Once again, simply not in the real world.

    @54 Pirat-Hunter
Well with the return of the Libertad at least you will have a ship capable of getting you to Antarctica, you’ll have to walk the rest of the way though.

Perhaps its time for Britain to review the size of its military deployment down there, with a view to increasing it, in light of this change in the balance of forces in the region.

@41 ERROR!!! Only 3% of the occupants of “argieland” are “people”.
@44 Bet you don't have the guts. Besides, I have now officially renamed “Buenos Aires” as Ground Zero. Geddit?
@48 Thought argieland had loads of “bases”. Thing is that Faggotland isn't allowed to obstruct entry. So any argie faggot trying to demand a visa or payment for one would be a bandit. And could be shot! I volunteer.
@54 Oh goody, alex. Safe (you think) in the (British) Commonwealth country of Canada, you'd like to start a war. One in which you won't take part because you're a coward. Big mouth, big (well-used) ass, but nothing else. Not a problem. Want to watch “your” few remaining aircraft shot out of the sky, or destroyed on the ground? Want to watch “your” few remaining boats bombed and/or torpedoed? Want to watch “your” troops and civilian infrastructure bombed and missiled. Here's some fun thoughts. Squadrons of Typhoons and Tornados (about 260) armed with bombs and air to ground missiles. Interspersed with around 225 cruise missiles per day. Followed by around 64 multi warhead nuclear missiles. There is no “Antarctica Argentina” or “Malvinas Argentina”. We can prove it. By wiping Faggotland off the face of the planet. YOU are just a desperate, queer slob. But send the word back to the cesspit. The annihilation of Faggotland is well overdue. We can pick up and dispose of dregs like YOU anytime.
@59 Man-to-man ANY Brit can kill a minimum of 20 Spaniards or argies. Proved it many times. How are you going to negotiate the nuclear, glass-walled craters? A nuclear defence program? Explain to the argies that actually live in argieland, how you have encouraged (from safe Canada) their annihilation. Mirror. Stick your tongue out. See how brown it is. And disgustingly smelly.
@62 STFU. You don't have a brain. Just an ass.
@69 I like this. First, we explode any “country” that doesn't comply. Then “Steer east away from QE Land”. “Aground? Are you an argie? Are you sinking? Tough.”

    Good comments Brasileiro.

The mass migration from (eg) the rural North East to (eg) the urban parts of SP State is a world wide problem, but at the moment few places in the world have such a BIG problem.

The favela buildings that millions of newly urban Brasilians have thrown up in the cities of Brasil will have to be dismantled.
Eventually the time of high-rise urban living will come to the poor of the favelas.
History elsewhere tells us that this will be cheap building. It will rapidly revert to high-rise slums with the same dangers as the favelas.
The cleared lands - if it happens in time - can have urban infrastructures for more extensive living for the new aspirant 'middle class'.
This takes much more land, and takes the people many miles away from their place of work. Higher speed mass worker-transportation will be necessary within and into the large cities ... and wages that cover the fare to and from work.

This needs special technocrat-politicians, people who can DO THINGS without the sort of corruption we see with the defunct Salvador Metro.

More people like Dilma, less people like Wagner.

This is the second time you have replied to me on this article and misrepresented what I have said. The first time you alluded to me speaking of Pirat-Hunter's homophobia and racism when I was talking about his intellectual deficiencies. Now you refer to “when Argentina acquired a chunk of Antarctica”.

But we haven't been talking about territorial claims. We've been talking about Argentina's research stations.

So yes I include you in the same category as Pirat-Hunter in doing no research. You either misread or misrepresent what is written and voice an opinion without facts. It is hardly “random Googling” when it's about the article in question.

“I'm not Argentine, after all”. So what! I don't care what nationality you are. Lack of articulation, inability to read or research and fluid beliefs don't know national boundaries.

    So I'll help you out:
First Argentinean base in Antarctic region-1904
First Argentinean base on Antarctic mainland-1942
    Territorial claim by Argentina-1951

So first Antarctic research station. Second station on the mainland (after Chile) and last territorial claimant (after UK, NZ, France, Norway, Australia and Chile).

In 1904 Argentina took over an abandoned British base, on territory claimed by the British in 1819. By your own list of dates Argentina was about 100 years too late.

The Brits were there claiming territory, long before Argentina finished conquering its way down S. America to get to be our neighbours in that part of the world.

Claims by Argentina they have some inherent rights there, and we are invaders are frankly hilarious to the British.

Britain thinks it can name pats of Antarctica because it regards it as British territory, the same reason Argentina thinks it can name parts of Antarctica which it regards as its territory.

Argentina protests because they are trying to intimidate the British, pure and simple bluff and bluster, they don’t have a case and they know it.

No doubt some parts of the world will have their own names for parts of the Antarctic, and will recognise neither the British or Argentinian names.

But in general I think many more countries will recognise the British names rather than any Argentinian ones. Time will tell.

Bottom line, any touchstone of ownership that is applied to the Falklands for ownership of those islands, would render the Antarctic Peninsula Argentine. The UK knows it, Argentina knows it, everyone knows it. It is ironic that it is the British posters here who are just “empty bluster” (in a role inversion vis-a-vis the Falklands threads)... No court will ever hand over that territory to the UK based on “first sighting or claiming”. If such a ruling were to be upheld, then the UK itself would immediately cease to exist the moment the ancient Stonehenge inhabitants placed a similar suit.

Thus the entity claiming Antarctica based on first sighting (which by the way was likely effectuated by the Portuguese or Dutch), would itself be subject to the ruling and not be able to claim anything, since they themselves would be dissolved as a nation when applying such an adjudication.

That aside, secondly, there is the issue that courts put far more weight on things like active presence, uninterrupted presence, permanent habitation, birthrates, total population etc. Under all those, Argentina wins by a league.

Third, as I mentioned in another thread, if (when) the UK breaks up, its “frozen” claim cannot be inherited by any descendant entity, because the Treaty states that no claim is mortmain, and no new claims can be made once the treaty take effect... that was in 1959. This was to avoid obvious litigious disaster if a country broke up and they tried to fight over the claim, or make separate claims themselves.

Fourth, even if the UK actually went to war over this territory, one can be guaranteed that no one will follow them on any attempt to kick out Argentina, because that would require a violation of all UN rights of sovereingty, self-determination, and peaceful resolution of disputes. I'd be far more likely that other countries would rush to Argentina's defense.

Fifth, the British people would rise up in arms if their kids were sent to fight for ice.

    EOS.

    @160 NTF
Long winded and barely understandable drivel obviously don't make you right.

6 nations got their arses into gear before Argentina made her claim, and not even Argentina is disputing that. By your reckoning Argentina can claim Laurie Island. Congratulations! Also Orcadas Base was originally Scottish and called Ormond House. Seems you guys never arrive first anywhere!

So last claim... back of the line for you.

Also Antarctica was terra nullius, like the Falkland Islands but unlike Britain or modern day Argentina. So Stonehenge was quite a facile example.

    Nay outright dumb.

And what court would weigh up birth rates, active presence, permanent habitation, total population and uninterrupted presence? I never thought you would admit that the Falkland Islands are British but you just did. Off to the ICJ now?

Congratulations. This quote will come back to haunt you.

You just can't get around the fact that Argentina didn't claim any territory until 1942. 2 years after Chile and 34 after Britain. Just can't get around that at all.

You also are conveniently ignoring Article IV of the treaty which states: “No acts or activities taking place while the present treaty is in force shall constitute a basis for asserting, supporting or denying a claim to territorial sovereignty in Antarctica or create any rights of sovereignty in Antarctica.”

So nothing Argentina has done since 23 June 1961 has any legal standing in this dispute.

    Oops!

And yes we all know you keep making a false claim about the UK losing territorial claim rights if Scotland declares independence but you know it's not true. Why do you continue to make false claims when you know they will be discovered? What would be left of the UK would be the successor state and is totally legal within international law. This state would not have to re-ratify all treaties nor reapply for UN membership. Just as Russia inherited the USSR's rights so would the smaller UK.

So stop lying. You look like a fool.

Umm no! Again do some research! Seems I got you instead.

“the sequence of claims is virtually irrelevant when all other factors that I enumerated are considered”

And there you go again highlighting your paucity of logical and knowledge.

I see that my quotes regarding the Antarctic treaty and international law stopped some if your hyperbole dead in its tracks. Just in case you missed it:

'So nothing Argentina has done since 23 June 1961 has any legal standing in this dispute.'

If you want to keep using the treaty then man up to the parts you don't like. Enumerate away.

“You are deluding yourself by attempting to assert that any hypothetical litigation would have such a narrow scope.”

So you don't think Argentina will or should abide by a treaty they signed?

“Just your typical colonialist land grab... a British tradition for 400 years. You never changed and never will change. And people are wising up.”

I think you are attempting to make a point and yet you didn't (again). So what if it is a land grab. Haha. I mean really so what! Isn't that what Argentina is doing? Isn't that how the Spanish laid the foundations for Argentina. Isn't that how Argentina claimed Patagonia? You're so tied up in knots and hypocritical that you don't see how fantastically comical you are.

Actually it's 439 years next year, less than Spain's 510 years in the Americas. Hard to criticise colonialism when you are a product of it. And who is “wising up”? The only squeals come from Argentina (and a few from Spain).

Again you believe Argentina making territorial claims is legitimate but Britain's are not.

You're a classic. Please don't stop because you keep adding to my argument at every turn.

We don't need ingratiating Christmas messages by our president. Our president is a politician, not some “Pappa Smurf in chief” like Americans mistakenly seek their president to be (in other words, their president must be both politician and moral leader... how absurd). You European monarchies get around that problem by ascribing such qualities to your King/Queen. Fine, you have that history of monarchical families. The French, Italians, and Germans got rid of their monarchies but still “patriarchalize” their leaders by expecting them to deliver silly festive messages.

In Argentina we are intelligenter, we seek confort in our families, and those who have faith, in their abodes of worship. We don't need some silly president, prime minister, or royal to condescend a clearly perfunctory speech not felt from the heart.

Granted, QEL won't appear in the Sesame Street Universal Atlas but it will appear in British maps and lets face it Stevie, unless you've discovered or surveyed or visited or mapped a place, it won't get named. just look at the robot on mars, new finds, new names, I suspect if the scientists named a small rocky outcrop 'prince harry's cliff', then argentina would be upset at that too. It is better to have names rather than something like, 'large rock #34532d/4'. Besides britain had some part in the discovery of antartica, will smith, captain weddell etc... all famous names in this neck of the woods. And from argentina there was......no one.
