Jan 08th, 2013 - 07:51 am - Link - Report abuse 0Why is this item is published here? No connection with Latin America and, anyway, Gibraltar was ceded to Britain in perpetuity by a Spanish monarch through the Treaty of Utrecht.
Like the EU is going to support, what for all purposes, is a blockade of a member state, by another member state, don't thinks so!

Spain laid siege to it in 1727 and then 1779 for 4 YEARS. Spain also closed the border from 1969 for 13 YEARS. Hardly sounds like Spain was very accepting of the Treaty of Utrecht now does it-unless laying siege was a provision? So Spain breached the Treaty of Utrecht as far back as 1727.
As for the isthmus. There were no maps in the treaty. Just “dominion is ceded over the town and castle of Gibraltar, together with the port, fortifications, and forts thereunto belonging”. Some of those forts are now in La Linea which shows the extent. Either way this area was supposed to be neutral territory that has now been divided between Gibraltar and Spain (La Linea). Spain has breached this provision too. The current border which has been permanently manned by Britain sentries for nearly 180 years was fenced in 1908; to which the Spanish government did not protest.
Strange that they feel so strongly about Gibraltar but aren't in a rush to hand back parts of North Africa they still have.

Jan 08th, 2013 - 02:01 pm - Link - Report abuse 0pathetic, now is the time to actively warn UK hoiday makers the long hidden truth about spains lack of security and rocketing crime mainly against UKs younger holiday makers, rapes, car theft, muggings, stabbings all of which are on the rise in spains coastal resorts(as well as madrid), before the summer bookings take off, and its the UK governments duty to its people to promote safer holiday alternatives.
seriously, if anyone is holidaying to spains mainland or majorca this year, you would be advised to always travel and stay with your group!!! I sh*t you not, theres a lot of growing er...... “african” criminal activity in those resorts these days, seen by my own eyes!!! dont forget your toothbrush & pepper spray!
Silly buggers, one in four unemployed, be better off using their time and efforts sorting that out, stand a far better chance of doing that, than ever getting their hands on Gib.
Jan 08th, 2013 - 02:12 pm - Link - Report abuse 0@10 they cant sort it out and once again out comes the gibraltar whipping boy distraction, one day Spain and Argentina will accept SELF-DETERMINATION its the way of todays civilized world, personally i dont believe for one minute that argentina or spain have a chance in hell of ever stealing their respective disputed territories and they know it, but it is a desperate tactic by ever increasingly desperate governments to force ANY sort of deal and get anything out of it...aggressive begging on an international scale, after all neither argentina or spain have anything to lose by pushing their bogus claims and everything to gain at the cost of the Falklanders and gibraltans human rights,territory and Self-Determination.

Having spent some time last Autumn staying in sight of Gibraltar, I can tell you things are difficult in Andalucía right now, money from British tourists and residents is just about the only thing keeping them from being a total basket case, Greek style.
They need a boycott by British tourists like they need a hole in the head. Something the Spanish gov does not seem to realise now, but they will soon enough.
Yes Spain, don't become like the Argie-turds. Remember - a lot of British pounds are spent in Spain and could go elsewhere.
