A temporary port for the oil industry to the east of the Falkland Islands capital is under consideration, but will be removed once a deep water modern permanent sea terminal is constructed in Port William, according to local officials. Read full article

Jan 21st, 2013 - 05:27 pm - Link - Report abuse 0The Falkland Islands will need far more than a deep-water terminal at Port William. The oil industry will mean some pretty big ships & heavy goods coming in at Port William, whilst the servicing needs for the platforms may have to split between other sites, just to have enough capacity.
Jan 21st, 2013 - 05:39 pm - Link - Report abuse 0The biggest losers in all this is the Argentine ports. If Argentina had been less confrontational & more cooperative, then this would have enabled some of the shipping to go through them. As it stands, nearly all goods will end up coming directly into the Islands. The oil industry is a very lucrative trade. It won't be long before Chile, Uruguay & Brazil seek to get involved as well.
So much shipping coming into Port William will facilitate exports as well as imports. The Falkland Islands will get rich with all the trade.

That speech by Mario Mazzitelli indicates that Argentina hasn't learnt from their losses of 1982 and wants to repeat the same mistake all over again.
Jan 21st, 2013 - 07:39 pm - Link - Report abuse 0How quickly they forget the 649 people they lost.
How quickly they forget that their invasion united the world against them.
How quickly they forget that Britain will protect the rights of the Falkland Islands whatever the cost.
Argentina is spoiling for a fight again. Just like the Junta in 82, Kretina gets more desperate to stay in power as things get worse at home. The country is falling apart economically, inflation and crime rampart but what does she do, but distract the population with a bankrupt national aspiration - to expand into other people's territory.
Argentina will NEVER obtain the Falklands whilst the Falkland Islanders do not want it. Does Buenos Aires have to reach 2 million degrees centigrade for them to understand this message?!
The United States will never let Argentina take the Falklands. They were involved from the start. The Americans know full well that this is British territory. They did not even invoke the Monroe Doctrine (enacted 10 years before) because this was not an invasion of the Americas by a European state, this was the re-establishment of British sovereignty obtained 58 years before.
Besides, the United States has strategic reasons for NOT letting Argentina claim the Falklands. Not just the money they've invested, but the fact that this is a defence of the right of self determination by the Islanders. Islanders, so of whose ancestors originated in the United States.
No matter what Argentina says, or how many countries they try to lie to get their support, the United States will never condone aggression to obtain land against the wishes of the population.
Grow up Argentina. You'll never get the Falklands. Learn to live with that.
You'd be better off trading with the islanders rather & making friends with them instead.
Their decision in March should be the final word.

Scratch the ARA Santísima Trinidad from the Argentine Navy order of battle. Sad that a Type 42 can fall prey to poor maintenance. But this is what happens when you starve the Navy of the resources needed to keep the ships in good order, even when they are in reserve or mothballed.
Jan 21st, 2013 - 10:45 pm - Link - Report abuse 0ARA Santísima Trinidad served in the Falklands War in 82. They were protecting the Argentine northern pincer when discovered by Flt Lt Ian Mortimer.
The Argentines claimed that a S2 Tracker was being followed by Mortimer's Sea Harrier, but the truth is that the CO of 801 NAS, Lt Cdr 'Sharkey' Ward, devised a plan to check the northern flank and sent Mortimer out on a planned track, radar silent, with the intention of popping up at a predetermined point and then scanning the area with the Blue Fox, to 'sanitise' the area of any surface contacts.
When Mortimer switched his radar on, he was lit up like a Christmas Tree with the 909 search radar of a Type 42 and painted as a target for a Sea Dart missile. He quickly descended to low level and Got the Hell out of Dodge!
As the British fleet knew that there was an Argentine Task Force to the north and another to the South, this intel was passed back to Northwood. The Prime Minister was appraised and gave the order to attack & sink the Belgrano.

No no no. It wasn't a pincer movement and it wasn't a navy destroyer and the Belgrano wasn't a warship, in a war zone in a war situation. I can't speak for everyone but unlike you I don't hold a persons country of birth against them, I dislike a lot of Argentines because of their political views but you can't control where you are born.
There is a part of me (a fairly large part) that would like the Falklands to stay the same but the realist in me knows that if we are going to develop as a country and and maybe strive for independence then we are going to have to grow which with a population as small as ours means immigration. Could you provide a source for your statement that the percentage of people born in the Falklands is less than 40% (which would not make us a minority as no other group would be as high as 40%).
It means that until they start extracting oil in the Falklands companies share prices are going to fluctuate. They aren't the only oil company and I'm pretty sure that some of the wells around the Islands will be comercially viable. To be honest if it wasn't for Argentine I wouldn't be that bothered if we didn't have oil. The main reason I want it to be viable is so we can pay for our protection from you instead of the British tax payer having to.
