Jan 29th, 2013 - 09:32 pm - Link - Report abuse 0As far as I am aware no major (or for that matter even minor) party is campaigning for a change to the status quo. even Alex Salmond has promised that Scotland would remain a constitutional monarchy even if Scotland votes to break away from the UK in the forthcoming referendum.
The reason for this, of course, is that the monarchy's role is now largely symbolic but it also puts checks and balances in place against government excess or in cases where a viable government cannot be formed (as happened in Australia and as could have happened after the 2010 UK election where a government took several days to form).
The monarchy aren't stupid, they know they only have their position as a result of popular consensus. If that ever changed, they would be out on their ears in very short order. Before people ask, there has been no referendum on the monarchy because no-one has asked for one.
I doubt it will be long before she is running up debts and refusing to pay them back, then appointing a royal plastic surgeon and setting up protectionist measures in favour of Edam and having royal pot an pan parades.

As for the Commonwealth countries, they can decide whether or not to become republics - they are allowed to vote on this without any veto from the UK. The UK could also get rid of the monarchy if they so wished.

All monarchies have a republican streak we aren't any different.
Tobias, not all Aborigines (capitalised) do not support the monarchy. They are free from repression to speak their mind. We don't run away from what we did to them in our past. We don't blame another country. Indeed, do we treat them worse than Argentina treats her aboriginals?
DanyBerger, you obviously missed how many countries declared independence from the UK in the past 60 years. Doesn't seem to be that difficult after all.
Don't mistake Australia's difficult referendum process for any other country's. You obviously don't know anything about our political system. There is a reason we made referenda difficult to pass. Our states our sovereign entities. Unlike many other federations, they have an international legal identity and sovereignty. It has been argued that each Australian state as a successor state to a colony has its own queen. Meaning there may be a Queen of Victoria!
Either way, as one if the world's oldest continuing democracies you have to little to argue with when it comes to our ability to show self determination. After all, we are the original self-determiners.
The first country formed by a vote!

Unfortunately I had to use that 15 yr dated pic as I couldn't find anything else as concise that gave such a good overall picture of the game.
You might have noticed that the numbers are quite erratic, 1988 at around 20% support pro republic ...and then 1995 at around 65% !!!
(less than a decade for a 45% difference....add the nature of these numbers to the fact that the republicans only have to get lucky once..uh oh)
Regardless, I expect you see the trend, even with jittery numbers around the early and late 90's, i can only estimate the steady overall upward creep has continued, as per the previous half century.
Oh btw...this might change things just a lil
