Give him hell and watch him squirm. Bet he'll come out with all sorts of shite afterwards about how he made them see rgenweeners case when the truth of the matter is he will be handed his arse on a plate by WH and the MLA's and left in no uncertain terms on the UK / Falkland Islanders stance. Then CFK will sack him, still think they should invite him to Pompey dockyard though or even a tour round the Queen Elizbeth in Rosyth

Well if he meets Mr Hague as HE has requested, just have the two MLA's present in the room, and a surprise visit by David Cameron who can hand him a letter with all the correct history of the Falkland Islands including documentation from the 17 & 1800's ships logs etc etc and a inslip telling rgenweener to do one.

The meeting will be in the foreign office not the Argentine embassy so Timmerman will have no control over who is able to attend. He'll just refuse to attend himself.

Good time for Dick & Jan to do a bit of shopping.

Yes I'm quite sure the meeting won't go ahead, it's difficult to look someone in the eye and tell them their human rights don't matter and they have no right to self determination. It's much easier to do this from a safe distance in sound bites, that is the cowards way, the Argentine way.

I wonder what the topic of conversation will be if this does happen

1 Your not buying enough from us despite our agreement not to buy anything from you
2 Your money is worth more thabn hours which is not fair
3 You must force your ships to come back to us and miss the Falkalnds
4 Your old ship you sold us years ago has sunk and it's your fault
5 It's our cluster of islands acording to our rewrite of hystory, prove me wrong
6 Why are you taking all our fish and oil from the mother land
7 Antartica is ours becuase we are closest and no one elses
8 Everyone in the world in goverment, power, on the streets, int he air, in space, in the bible even say that the Falklands are ours. Honest they do, they even signed this piece of paper to say so. Prove me wrong!

    What have I missed?

He cannot seriously expect to get anything other than a right, royal bollocking and to be made an idiot. He is pretty much walking to his own, very public execution.

I really hope that this is videoed for posterity. A brainless argie wriggling on the hook he's provided. Can we just imagine it?
T: The Malvinas were stolen from Argentina in 1833.
FI: Can we start by discussing the situation of the Falkland Islands between 1690 and 1820?
    T: That's not relevant!
FI: Is that because it's a 130-year period of British sovereignty?
    T: Spanish sovereignty!
FI: But the Spanish didn't arrive until 1767. And, even then, they only bought the French settlement. The installations. France had no sovereignty.
T: The British abandoned the Islands!
FI: No. Because of other commitments, Britain temporarily evacuated its settlements. It never relinquished sovereignty.
    T: The Nootka Convention!
FI: Doesn't apply. Britain agreed not to colonise anything else. It didn't. It just retained what it had already colonised.
T: The papal bull of 1493!
FI: That was rejected even at the time.
T: In 1833, the Argentine population was forcibly removed by British military action!
FI: No, they weren't. The illegal military garrison were requested to leave. Just four civilians chose to go with them.
T; Argentina inherited the Islands from Spain!
FI: But the Islands didn't belong to Spain. There was, and is, no legal principle by which a rebellious colony can “inherit” territory. And Spain didn't even “recognise” Argentina until 1856.
T: Argentina claimed the Islands in 1820!
FI: Leaving aside the fact of an illegal act by a common criminal, a pirate, why would Argentina decide to “claim” something it believed it already owned?
    T: Malvinas Argentinas!
WH: Now, Mr Foreign Minister, why don't you accept the reality? The Falkland Islands don't belong to Argentina. And we have the evidence to prove it. Should you choose to take the matter to the ICJ. So why don't you sod off? Or do we have to crush your country properly?

Could be a catch 22 for the Argentine deligation. If they refuse to accept and talk to the MLA's they will be ridiculed and if they do acept the Mla's they will be dambed by their own Country for acknoweledging that we exist. My guess is they will find a way to cancel this planned meeting after our representitives leave the Islands. Either way The Falkland People win another round.

Tinman, is already showing us how desperate Argentina are, they need to maintain the publicity for their colonial claim. After the 180th anniversary of the fake usurp is over, there is nothing left to keep this in the news and they know the issue will start to fade. After this London event and the referendum the UK should just ignore the morons. Their claim cannot go anywhere without publicity.

Please have a read of the comments from the RG public in the link below, many of them agree with us, that the RG Govt are idiots.

The Argentinian politician meets the British politician.
The other two mock representatives go stand in the corner.
The islanders are just an extension of Great Britain, spend the same money, speak the same language, have the same ...yuck...monarch, same military, culture, laws, same everything with some novelties thrown in (oh look heres a slightly different stamp , in a weak attempt to be a country (all the world see's through it).
Look just own up and say its a bit of England, stop this franchising BS throughout the world, it only causes trouble and huge animosity towards the very country they claim to love. (theres your loyalty)
Then perhaps real self determination and diplomacy can begin. The islands would be split 50/50 tomorrow if all Britons were given the choice. Because Britons are are normally sensible, not like the other crackpot deranged Britons that remain in various bunkers around the world, causing trouble for all involved, and in this case claiming vast swathes while whinging that they want the centuries old dispute to end at their convenience, riiight about now, 'we have it good so you can stop now' wouldn't that be handy.
Unfortunately such disputes don't get forgotten overnight, as the millions of mainland Brits know.

@65 wow that was some spiel, few pick ups though.
the only one that will be standing in the corner is tinman whilst he gets his arse handed to him on a plate.
It's not a bit of England it's a BRITISH OVERSEAS TERRITORY the clues in the title dipshit.
Think the chance of a 50/50 split is way off the mark try 98/2 against rgenweener owning any of the Falkland Islands.
None of our overseas colonys cause us any problems the only cause of problems is jealous twats like rgenweener that want something they can't have.
You are right on just one point though disputes don't get forgotten, we will never forget 1982, and thats why you will always be in our shadow and watch on enviously as the Falklands go from strengh to strengh.
So trot on and be prepared to be highly embarrassed when the Tinman cancels. And even if he doesn't cancel still be prepared.

    65 Vestige

Your attitude, of contempt and hostility towards Falkland Islanders is the best illustration of why there is no long term solution to this 'dispute' in sight. Your frankly colonialist attitude just won't do in this day and age.

Your description of the islands' society and culture has no basis in reality, and doesn't become any more true just because you keep saying it. If it were true, and the islands was 'just another part of England', then there wouldn't be a problem, would there? We would all just go 'home' and that would be the end of it.

We are Falkland Islanders first and British second, and our 'loyalty' doesn't stretch to destroying ourselves so that the British government can have a nice cup of tea with Timerman without things getting awkward.

I don't know what gave you the idea that you were qualified to talk on behalf of the 'average Briton'. Given your almost complete ignorance about the Falkland Islands, I see no reason to think you know anything about Britain either.

Another option for HE the Foreign Minister. He might choose to turn up with the Fabiana Rios and a gang of portfolio holders from the Provincial Government. Then the local politicians could talk at each other until they tire themselves out, leaving the two ministers to get down to the real business of relations between the two nations.

As we're talking political stunts, perhaps Governor Rios could relay to her subordinate executives on the Islands the progress of her simultaneous Referendum asking The Question of the whole of her bailiwick.

William Hague said he wasn't going to discuss anything about Falkland Islands sovereignty without FIG representatives being present. It seems like a good way forward from the present stalemate to have our elected representative on hand just in case the conversation heads in that direction.

If you object to that approach, then I suggest you lobby your elected representatives for a change in government policy and vote accordingly at the next UK general election. That is, if you aren't a feeble Argentine troll, in which case you have even less opportunity to influence UK government policy. Never mind.

Dear me, it gets right up your colonialist nose to see us pesky Falkland Islanders getting above ourselves, doesn't it, you old dinosaur. Well I'm tugging my forelock for you right now, but it's a hopeless cause I fear. The world will just move on.

Timerman would have been better pulling a stunt at a neutral venue. But to go into the enemy's HQ where you have no control over anything and you are trying to argue a case that is miserably weak to begin with, is suicidal. By rolling out the red carpet Britain can say it is playing fair by (non-binding) UN resolutions to talk. It's lose lose for Team RG. I'm struggling to imagine what possible scenario they have in mind that could make them look good here. The 18 “outstanding” Europeans will need to be absolute A-listers to have any chance of avoiding a total whitewash. Either way it'll make great telly!

That makes a lot more sense than the Falklanders giving up half their territory to a nation that shows them nothing but malice and has a history of aggression against them. Who on earth would want their enemy in their property when they can have the nearly 300miles away?

@81 totally agree they must have seen this coming, they will look really bad for refusing to talk, whilst Britain and the Falklands will just say you had the opportunity but refused. The whole point of him coming is to put forward thier case however weak it is to 18 “outstanding” people, so to be seen to refuse to talk to either WH and the MLA's will not go down well with the UN or in fact any international committee LOSE LOSE.

My gratuitous advice to Argentina on how to deal with you ungrateful colonists has only one objective. To drive you into the arms of the UK. My political strategy is very much forward looking. Extraction of the UK from the EU and incorporation of the Overseas Territories and Dependencies into the UK so that they can contribute to reducing the UK National Debt and the annual deficit. Once in the UK our elected representatives can then discuss devolution.

Splendid plan don't you think? Defeat Argentinian aspirations by meeting the one criteria the C24 can't reject. Integration.

    1. The Argentines fail to show. Win.
    2. The Argentines show and refuse to talk with FIG representaives present. Win.
    3. The Argentines show up and trilateral talks take place. Win.

There's one thing for certain. Having been invited to take part in talks at the FO. The Argentines are going to look pretty foolish, if they do not attend and continue harping on about the UK not complying, with Non binding UN Resolutions to do just that.

@99 I think these things are best left to Embassies to arrange.

On another point, did you see this gem from Penguin News?

Finally, a late paper was submitted [to EXCO] requesting that funds previously allocated for observer costs for the forthcoming Referendum be reallocated to cover additional administrative costs. EXCO paper 205/12 had previously requested funding for 'covering the cost of the observers, their travel, accommodation and subsistence'. As planning for the referendum has progressed it has become clear that it would be inappropriate for FIG to fund any aspect of the observer mission, hence the redirection of this funding.

Or could it be there will no Observers, UN or otherwise? Either way, I remain convinced that this political stunt was the work of a bunch of political amateurs.

I'm sure, for example, that your proposed integration option must be music in the ears of those who like to keep the Malvinistas in a state of fizzing agitation, and indeed of those who enjoy getting into such a state themselves.

Timerman turns down meeting with Hague, Malvinas assembly members - Foreign Minister Héctor Timerman turned down an invitation by his British counterpart William Hague to take part in a meeting in London with representatives of the Malvinas government, assuring that “the international community does not accept the involvement of a third party” in the sovereignty issue.
In a letter directly addressed to Hague, Timerman acknowledged that he had been interested in holding a bilateral meeting with him during his next visit to London since “he is responsible for the United Kingdom’s foreign policy,” and regretted that he wouldn’t’ meet “without the supervision of the Malvinas Islands settlers.”

According to “think” the only Argentines that we ever expelled from “Las Malvinas” had only been there for 2 months. Are you telling me that when the Argentine militia arrived in November 1832 there were heavily pregnant women aboard??

And these heavily pregnant women gave birth during the 10 week window?

Maybe it was the shock of watching the murder of Mestevier that forced them into labour....or perhaps having to endure watching the gang rape of his wife???

It seems awfully harsh, that your government (or more accurately the government of the United Provinces) would select heavily pregnant women as part of a 50 strong militia to set up a penal colony...

I also don't see any record in your “National Archives” of 1-2 month old infants being part of the group that left in January 1833.

Are you sure these Falkands born infants were expelled??

    > The status quo doesn't shut up Argentina, make us friends or guarantee us the support of “the rest of the world” now does it?

Whats so bad about the status quo? Argentina is no more than a nuisance. After 50 years of trying they have never succeeded in getting sovereignity into a UN resolution, or any limitation on the principle of self-determination. The most serious support they have been able to muster is from their cultural cousins and the usual suspect rogue states, old and new. And there's not enough of that to get any more than a call for dialogue and peaceful negotiation that nobody in their right mind could possibly object to.

    Except Hector Timerman, maybe.

Excellent!. Are recognizing, as it is impossible to deny, the facts of the January 3, 1833 that ultimately that's what matters:
England's INVASION of Argentine territory indisputably with Argentine authorities there, with a flag flying at Puerto Soledad (the Argentina of course).
If these events had not occurred, there would be no ugly kelper but only Argentines as in any other part of our country.
Also here's a tiny sample of Argentine Malvinas born long before they began to get the okupas sent from London, of course, then take over our islands. Also those okupas are only 1000, make no mistake, the other 2000 can not even be considered Argentine by Argentine law. Only okupas.

One thing I forgot to add was that the only asset Argentina has is the colonial narrative which they have been able to sell to the gullible, the ill-informed and the ill-disposed. The problem with that is it is a depreciating asset, despite your most assiduous efforts at shoring it up.

Of course I recognise the events of January 1833.

A 50 strong militia of mutineers/rapists/murderers who had been there only 10 weeks (none of them islanders as they weren't born there) were removed by the HMS Clio, without a shot being fired.

    Now..about the genocide in Patagonia.

    No, no, silly.
From the issue here is foreign occupying Argentine territory and do not want to return as if not subject to the laws of the country they occupy.
If you want to be “british” pack their bags and go to Britain, that you did not know, is a country left in Europe and not in South America.
That's the only thing they can choose freely.
Nobody here remains deceived and much less deceived by “British” and kelpers, they are the same.

Of course, they are British and not aliens pretending to be a third party in the dispute. In this trampita Argentina never fell.

Tonight The Falkland Islands flag flys beautifully over The governors residence like it as for the past 180 years, you Argentines have cried like girls have fought like girls and still the same old flag flys, now instead of coming here talking shit go and make your own country Argentina a better place, andfor the first time in 31 years go and try and elect a leader and a governmant that is not corupt that will serve for the people of Argentina and not for it's own pockets then perhaps you will be a slightly nicer more at peace type of people but we will not hold our breath.

When Argentina invaded the islands in 1982, there were approximately 80 Royal Marines here. And if it wasn't for you and your insane ambition, that is how it would be now.
There is no 'militarization'. There is less military presence here than at any time in the last 30 years. Now there are two companies of infantry and the means to support the Typhoons, which is the bare minimum to dissuade you from doing anything foolish.
You've only got yourselves to blame.

@145 José Malvinero: It has already been well established that that when comes to having their people removed by force from the Falklands, the UK beats 'Argentina' by over 60 years (1770 compared to 1833).

    AND

The diary of Vernet's wife proves that Vernet knew the Islands were not Argentine when he took his workers there, and his getting papers for his workers from the UK to allow his workers to live on the islands should give even the most stupid person a huge hint as to who Vernet considered to control the islands.

In the days of wind powered ships and basic communication methods the 'Argentine' soldiers and their hangers-on only lasted 2 months before being evicted by the UK. Again, even the most stupid person should be able to grasp that if Vernet had made any sort of claim for 'Argentina' (as he did - at least in the diary - in 1829) from the start of his venture, his stay on the island would have been very, very short or even not have happened.

I'm afraid, if you look at the historical documents, and are capable of even the slightest critical analysis, you will have to conclude that Vernet was at least a migrant worker in British territory and you could even go as far as an immigrant to British territory.

Oh, and just for further notice, if you are going to quote me: don't actually type the opposite to what I wrote in your quote. It makes it really obvious that you are a liar when people have to 2 posts to compare ON THE SAME WEBPAGE.

It also makes you look really stupid.

I was not talking about Vernet but if that's the point ...
Vernet, a German immigrant to the Rio de la Plata, with Pacheco asked the central government of Buenos Aires land concessions for exploitation in Soledad Island was granted, and also was given the title of Political and Military Commander all the Malvinas Islands in 1829 (from the English for these Argentine beaches, no news, because recognizing the Spanish sovereignty, the very pirates had retired in 1774). They are known all measures adopted after Vernet enforce laws against Argentine sailors who came and fished on the islands (field no one got in until the arrival of Vernet). This means that fully exercised the attributes of his office. For example, the illegal fishing boats catch Americans involved, as I remember, the only time that Argentina severed diplomatic relations with the U.S.
After Vernet preferred if this or any other sovereignty in the islands, is absolutely irrelevant. An individual can not decide the sovereignty of a part of the national territory and, therefore, if it existed, has no value. Could be Vernet, Juan or Pedro would be the same.

    153 José Malvinero:

'An individual can not decide the sovereignty of a part of the national territory'

@153 José Malvinero: Glad you agree. Then CFK and her hangers-on were full of shit at the UN C24 when they claimed Argentina's claim to the Falklands was from 1829.

Already British territory. The UK claim did not expire in 1774, just as the Spanish claim MAY not have expired in 1811 when they evacuated to Montevideo (although some say it reverted to France at this point).

Either way Spain only gave up its claim in 1836, so you have been caught writing lies again.

@155: Argentina (in whatever form) has proven throughout its history that it will do and say whatever it likes, no matter what the reality is.

With this in mind your statement, “The government of Buenos Aires could not take the actions you took in the Malvinas if it not belonged” can be viewed as complete drivel.

You then say, well there would have been if it weren't for Jan 3rd 1833, when the 50 murderers, rapists and mutineers, who'd only been there 2 months were removed by the crew of HMS Clio.

In the grand scheme of the Americas, and the removal of indigenous people, by both Northern and Southern Europeans....it's not really up there is it?

    2 months...50 people...already murdered and raped....most of them European...not a shot fired.

Sorry mucker....don't feel too bad about that one.

Perhaps the 900 deaths on your conscience in 1982 should weigh more heavily.

The FCO doesn't count (how droll I am).

Further, whilst I normally don't double post, you may not have seen this cracker from Exco.

Finally, a late paper was submitted requesting that funds previously allocated for observer costs for the forthcoming Referendum be reallocated to cover additional administrative costs.

With just over a month to go it finally dawned on someone that paying the expenses of observers was inappropriate. Amateurs..

@189 Let me take time out of my busy evening to explain. It's a play on the word “count”, because that's what one does with a Referendum; one counts votes. However, as any representative of any country or territory with HM the Queen as Head of State could hardly be described as independent, the FCO can't supervise it. It wouldn't count i.e. it wouldn't be correct. Very subtle, understated and mildly humourous, as is poaching it from another poster and layering it with an ironic touch of one's own.

Were one a troll hunter of any merit one would point to the following inflammatory, extraneous, and off-topic comment as being the real work of a Troll and a not at all droll one at that:

Therefore, Hague is 100% correct to invite MLA's along to view their interests as the indigenous population.

Hague is also complying with the UN Charter, of which all the points even territorial integrity, if this is examined properly, support the Falkland Islands.

Therefore Timerman's rejection of the chance to talk is against his favoured resolution which was made null and void by 1982 and resolution 502.

Hopefully by now, the sleepy MLA's will have acquainted themselves with the history of the islands from 1765-1820 and thereon which seem with careful analysis from many of the informed posters on here, to refute Argentinas claims.

I realise the claims are farcical but like some posters here, I think the MLAs (and the UK Foreign Office) should waste no opportunity to counter the Argentines when they misquote history, especially relating to 1833.

Full credit though to the MLAs who are getting out in the world to get their viewpoint across in the subtle way they are expert in.

You have not the slightest idea that if a Brit in the Falklands slags the bens off, they do not touch their toes but give the Brit a piece of their mind.
But don't take my word for it why not try yourself? Go to the islands posing as a pom and try to get the better of a Benny on their home turf.
Good luck, hope you leave MPA in one piece.......
