Argentina’s central bank reported that at the end of January it had reserves totalling 42.65 billion dollars which is the lowest level since President Cristina Fernandez took office in December 2007. At the time the central bank international reserves totalled 46.2 billion dollars. Only in April 2007 were reserves at a lower level, 38.6bn dollars. Read full article

Argentina on Friday claimed that it could not just dip into its central bank reserves to pay, telling the court that upholding Judge Griesa’s order would “open the door to potential claims by holders of more than $43bn in principal and interest of both defaulted and restructured Argentine debt, an amount greater than the reserves”.
Argentina has $42.7bn in reserves but argued that it is “not an open till to pay plaintiffs and other claimants at the order of US courts”.
Argentina is facing other legal challenges, such as that by a group of Italian holdouts at the World Bank’s arbitration tribunal, ICSID, and fears a wave of copycat litigation if Elliott wins.
Exchange bondholders (EBH) told the court in a separate filing that Argentina only had about $19bn of reserves actually available, outstripping some $26.5bn owed to creditors and $23.6bn in likely claims if Judge Griesa’s order were upheld.

Feb 04th, 2013 - 02:44 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Once again I see I have not missed much while in Argentina…….the Nostril does nothing in relation to the articles…..laughs and rants of meaningless things and talks of life he has never experienced. What the hell…..when you cannot defend what you are paid to support……divert and insult. I agree with your tactics though nostril, if I had to support a dying country because of the vast corruption, I too would change the subject back to the others. Afterall….in war the best defense from an assault is to aggressively push through it as a counter assault…..as you are doing. You cannot argue on a point at all so you resort to changing the subject. When someone speaks from experience, something you have nothing of outside of you world of Mendoza….you disappear. Have they quilled the rioters over the soccer tickets?
Feb 04th, 2013 - 02:50 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Argentina is technically and practically bankrupt and refuses to work to change that. Perhaps asslips will ultimately steal what is in all those import containers and steal them for her own pockets. There is so many half competed buildings in the city of BsAs and will never be completed. In several months when Columbia takes over Argentina’s seat in the G20, the vortex will speed up to a dizzying pace. Perhaps the people will snap by then and storm the GREAT PICK HOUSE. The mid term elections will say a lot about which way Argentina will go. The way of Venezuela or Chile.
Yankee, Argentina has no reserves to speak off, only what the citizens possess. They had to save just to get that navy ship fixed and returned. Dumburger also does not seem to know that the US Federal Reserve is not the US Federal Government. Nor does he realize that the USA does not count private cash holdings as theirs, for US businesses alone has over 5 trillion in cash reserves…..Apple alone has over 75 billion in cash. And more importantly, the USA will not steal businesses for cash like the ARGIE model.

@Sussie/Red/Carlos If you're paying $300 a month for electricity (in reality ;), you're crazy unEco.
In So California in the aughts, I payed $15 a person w my roomies. Unsubsidized. Doubled to ~$30 in the three winter months because we used expensive electrical heat. Summer, ocean breezes.

Feb 04th, 2013 - 10:36 pm - Link - Report abuse 0I see Toby is gleeful in the partial electrical outage at the new stadium in New Orleans.
Let's be clear Toby, the system functioned as intended. They think a piece of equipment from the half time show malfunctioned, the stadium's electrical system detected the anomaly and shut down the breakers and turned on the back up emergency electricity.
Thank goodness we have these Systems in the USA, unfortunately for the 100s of dead in the Cromagnon fire in BA and the recent fire in Brazil we don't have 100s dead during an extravagant show.
Everyone was safe, buying more drinks waiting for the light to come back on, nobody rioted, was raped, got killed, got mugged. Angry fans weren't rioting, tearing down barriers, injuring Police and each other. All was orderly and fixed within minutes.
It had nothing do with with the grid, nobody in town lost power,
Only a piece of equipment malfunctioned.
Big whoop
If that make you happy it is sad.
My house is warm, I have electricity, internet and cable even in the worst of storms.

There is even one beach there that is full of glass shard pollution and they made it a tourist attraction!!
Go around cities like Phoenix, Las Vegas, Miami and ENTIRE areas of the city are ABANDONED. the homes, the shops, everything. Even car dealerships and supermarkets, just abandoned. In Mendoza we can't open supermarkets and neighborhoods fast enough.
New York was voted the smelliest city on Earth, in Washington DC they don't have the budget to put some grass for the inaguration of their president, and in their biggest sporting event the power goes out for an hour.
Lets not forget that their levies and dams break with a stupid little flood, their bridges collapse (Minneapolis), and it took them over a MONTH to get power to gas stations in their most important city after an average hurricane in wind strength.
And of course, mass shootings every solitary day at schools, at malls, at courhouses, at parks....

Can any Rg on the board show me where price controls on anything have ever stopped an inflation spiral? Is the stupidity of the CFK administration measurable?

The International Monetary Fund's historic rebuke of Argentina is likely to cement its outcast status among global investors while failing to persuade the government to boost the credibility of its economic data.
Feb 07th, 2013 - 01:12 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Argentina on Feb 1 became the first nation to be censured by the IMF after the Washington-based lender said that President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner's government isn't addressing concerns that it's underreporting inflation, which analysts forecast is more than double the 10.8 per cent official rate. While the move won't have an immediate effect, it takes the country a step closer to sanctions that include expulsion.
This official action makes it quite apparent to those who may want to invest in Argentina that there's trouble, said Albert Fishlow, a former top US diplomat to Latin America.
Still, Argentina's feuding with foreign investors dates back to its 2001 financial meltdown, which Ms Fernandez blames on the fund, and she is unlikely to change the course of policy that is being shaped by other influences, such as the price of soybeans, he said.
.
Dany, Since you are obviously not well informed Argentina has been in a recession since Nov 2011. The contruction industry has lost 40,000 jobs and is the worst since 2002. The real estate industry is down 85% yoy!! Which means it is dead stopped. Wine industry has laid off 16,000 since the USA implemented higher taxes on RG products.

Argentina had never been in recession since 2003.
To consider a economy in recession and depending of the country criteria the economy has to shrink for at least 2 consecutive ¼ or 6 months.
That had never happened in Argentina since 2003 so meanwhile growth is over 0 even 0.10% no recession exist.
And for your knowledge the only countries in recession or stagnation in the world are the PIIGS, Britain, USA and Japan and that will be like this for so long at least 10 years more.
Enjoy it...

If you think the U.S. economy is bad now, just wait for a few months. Things are about to become absolutely nightmarish. None of the long-term economic trends that are hollowing out our economy have been addressed and more bad economic news seems to come out virtually every single day. Now there is constant talk of the next recession in the mainstream media. But did the last recession ever truly end? The number of good jobs continues to decline, more stores are closing, incomes continue to go down, credit card debt and student loan debt are soaring, the housing market resembles a corpse, the number of Americans living in poverty continues to rise and government debt is at unprecedented levels. We are losing blood fast, and almost all of our leaders are either too corrupt or too incompetent to be able to do anything about it. The U.S. economy really and truly is about to go into the toilet, and if something is not done very quickly we are going to experience a complete and total economic disaster in this nation.
Americans have been promised over and over that this economic downturn is just temporary and that things will return to normal soon. During this upcoming election cycle, the Democrats will swear that they have all the answers and that if we just elect them everything will be okay. The Republicans will also swear that they have all the answers and that if we just elect them everything will be okay.
Well, both sides are lying. The economic plans of both major political parties are a joke. Neither of them can restore economic prosperity to this nation..

Does anyone know the real figure, probably out of money is my gut feeling.
ChrisR ...they are very likely out of international money completely. I was reading about Venezuela and Rgentina is mirroring everything they do. Venezuela started controlling the dollar because they had no dollars. Yesterday they did a major revaluation.
Feb 09th, 2013 - 01:41 pm - Link - Report abuse 0When I was in Rgentina, almost no one would accept debit and credit cards because it takes over a month for Rgentine banks to exchange the funds. Funny though, I see so many British tourist when I was there, unlike these trolls would have you believe. It was also interesting to see container upon container sitting and rusting in Puerto Madero and the grocery stores, rather than displaying bare shelves like in the past, they would over buy one product and fill the empty shelf with the over stocked product they could buy. You can go down one aisle and they entire aisle be olive oil! It looked crazy. The bank is out of green backs, it was proved when they could not pay to repair that naval vessel in South Africa. It is going to get worse living paycheck to paycheck considering the most recent argi reports on soy and corn. The weather is not cooperating with asslips.
Dany/Sussie, I don't need to hire a think tank. I can think all by myself! Obviously you can't provide any links to growing RG industry in 2012, psst..I already knew that.

No hopes of that:
1) they do not have the money;
2) they do not know what laundry or detergent is and as for toilet paper?
3) they probably stink to hell.
But they are fixated on Peronism and TMBOA.
Something to keep in the back of all your minds: just like there is a divide of who voted for Obama, who supports Cameroon, not everyone in Rgentina supports or wants asslips or even peronists in power, nor do we always support where our leaders take the direction of the country. Anyone that believes All Rgentines are fixated on peronism have never been there. The working and middleclass RG's have more money then people think they have. Although the stupidity and passivity of the Argentinians seems to shock me all the time.
They are after the farmers now with the help of the AFIP. After stealing the farmers market, they are pressuring them to steal to hurry up and dollars, of course for ready for the next debt payment. How many times can they shoot themselves in the feet?
